HD reliability....

Had a HD fail today and sure enough it was a Quantum that I had. That is the 5th Quantum drive that has failed. In all of the computers we have at home and at work we have only had 1 other brand fail and that was a 30 Gig. Deskstar, aka Deathstar. Granted most of the drives are tossed in a drawer and replaced with a bigger drive every few years but it seems like those Quantums were really bad investments. Haven't ever had a Maxtor fail on me and we have had tons of them in the last few years.

In my computer lifetime, I've had 3 hard drives fail. 2 were Maxtor, and 1 was a Hitachi laptop drive. I have one Quantum, which has been running for around a decade. By the way, Maxtor *is* Quantum.

Hmmm.... I hadn't kept up one things in the HD world and didn't know that about Maxtor and Quantum being one in the same. Most of the Quantum failures I saw were in the 40-250 Meg. size range until this 6 Gig. that failed today.

I'm not sure what brand they use but I had a 40gig HDD fail in my Compaq notebook computer when it was only a few weeks old. Similarly, my Mum's Compaq notebook had the same problem at about 6 months. :!:

2 out of 2 HDD failures - some record huh!

Edit: Both HDDs fixed by replacement under warranty for free.

I had an Hitchi 60 gig drive fail but it was still under warranty.

Luckily, the previous day I had backed it up to DVD RWs :D

My main machine has 2 @ 120gig, any important data is mirrored across the drives.

I hope my system behaves as I'm running dual Western Digital 74GB Raptors in RAID 0 - Striped - Configuration. Hard drive access is superfast. My computer is on a UPS so hopefully any power sags or spikes get smoothed out.

My main machine here at home has a 250 Gig in it and a second one laying on top of it. I had hoped to set them up in raid so that stuff was backed up and it was also faster. This setup though is wierd in that I have trouble getting drives to boot in it. I have to go in and delete the boot secotor of the drive and try again then it works. Never had this before and I am thinking it is a problem with the MSI MB since this is my first of that brand.
