Weren't we supposed to organise a WCG challenge in the rememberance of Ramjet around this time?

I was thinking i'm running late on all that. What about something like the 12th to the 20th? Is that getting to close to the busy holiday? Is it still cool enough for our southern hemisphere members? It would be nice to make the race at wcg and boincstats if possible. If just one I think boincstats would be better for the stats.

"From December 18th 16:28:00 UTC until December 21st 16:28:00 UTC we (Primegrid) will be having a 3 day challenge running the Proth Prime Search (Sieve) application."
This is OK as WCG doesn't have a GPU project so it won't interfere.

ps. It is currently reasonably cool in my town (mid 20's C), let's hope it stays that way for this challenge.

No problem Jason. I have put some machines on no new work for Primegrid so as to be ready for the Ramjet Memorial Challenge. I figured by the get go I should have 24 cores ready to crunch WCG.
I will see if I can find some more by the start time.

Come on team, please join in and have some fun.

We are still 2 days out from the start of the Ramjet memorial challenge and we have 11 teams signed up. That's pretty good I think.

As Founder I have the opportunity to send an email to all AMD Users team members on World Community Grid. Do you think I should use this to publicize the challenge? Jason would you like to write something suitable I can use in a team-wide email. Remember that many people who are signed up for AMD Users in WCG never visit this team site or our Facebook page.

Join us in a memorial race to honor our fallen cruncher Ramjet. It was a year ago when the micro managing of his crunching pharm was cut short. He continued as much as he could through his short battle with cancer and strokes. His crunching pharm continues to run in his memory and will be working hard during this race under jason1478963 as always. His wife, sons, family and friends continue to support this great cause. Please join us in our memorial race to honor him and others that have also fallen. Stop by at https://boincstats.com/en/stats/challenge/team/chat/971 or http://www.amdusers.com/forum/showthread.php/11090-Ramjet-Memorial-Challenge?p=82055#post82055 to tell us who your crunching to honor.

Thanks Vaughan for the email. I saw this was coming up, and had forgotten to get things lined up ready to go for the memorial challenge! While I never knew RamJet i am happy to crunch in his honor as well as the numerous people I know that are currently fighting or have sadly lost their battle with the horrible beast that is cancer.

Hope everyone has an enjoyable and productive competition.

4th place is a very nice tribute to Ramjet and others I think. I appreciate all the efforts on this race by our team and others as I know crunching can be very costly. I don't think we would have maintained 4th place if it wasn't for everybody that helped in this race. One machine less and we could have been in 5th place :P

Congrats on the badges Dirk, it is always nice to get some upgrades during a race. I am still short 16.5 years on my next badge upgrade. This should be achieved by the end of the heating season with Ramjets Pharm, my brothers and my more efficient machines.

Well Done Everybody

Bumping up an old thread... can't believe another year is almost gone by already.

Many things happened this year, but today Ramjet came to my mind. I believe that may have been triggered because today I videochatted with my older sister in Portugal, who was diagnosed with breast cancer this year and appears to have beat it to the best of her knowledge, after surgery and several rounds of chemo.
We can be blessed as individuals and win small personal battles every now and then, but it will take a much greater and combined effort from everyone to win the war itself.

With that in mind, shall we rally together and create the second annual Ramjet memorial WCG challenge? :)

Since it appears the challenge is not yet declared publicly, now is the time to strategize. I supported this last year with the same devotion I do the Pentathlon, and plan to do so again. That being said, assuming one of the climate projects is not launched before then, and does not contain a GPU app, my vote is for a run-time challenge. At full-burn I am clearing four months per calender day, however most of the cores are on the weaker side, so results returned and points I cannot thrive in. (Also a run-time challenge doesn't have me min/maxing clocks to the point of meltdown 23h a day) Obviously I am one person, so let's get the the conscientious of the collective, and give us the best chance possible at coming out on top.

EDIT: I could probably thrive in a results returned as well, would just need to figure out what I can chew through the fastest with my hardware and OS, and focus solely on that. However if the challenge is only on cancer related research and not WCG as a whole, my server-class chips take 8-10h to clear a Mapping Cancer Markers unit, while my desktops can clear them in 3.5-5h at current clocks.

Another memorial challenge would be great as too many people are dealing with or being lost to cancer. Thanks for the bump on the thread NeoGen. I am glad to hear that things seem to be well with your sister and hoping for great health in the future.

I feel a runtime competition would be OK as new projects can be run to help out during that event. I know Ramjet would love these challenges as he believed in the many WCG projects we have contributed to.

I would like runtime preferably on MCM (Mapping Cancer Markers), I might be able to reach to the 10-year badge with a bit of effort. MIP (Microbiome Immunity Project) and SCC (Smash Childhood Cancer) I might be able to get to sapphire.

What are the options for runtime at WCG. One project, multiple projects or all projects. Can we still pull this off in early December? With new projects in the pipeline do we want to do all projects to include betas and or new projects if they launch? As Ramjet enjoyed chasing Betas and new project badges It would be nice to keep these in mind as well.

Both at WCG itself (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewAllTeamChallenges.do) and at Boincstats (https://boincstats.com/en/stats/challenge/team/overview) there are already (WCG)Challenges in that time window. We still can do e.g. a beta-special in the original time frame though at WCG.

Is it because you tried to create a run-time during a window a run-time is already in place? If that is the case my vote is results returned across all projects (so I can find the fastest one and just chew them up) or anything really, as I will support regardless.

As far as the climate research, it was announced back in April I believe, then pretty much radio silence, there was a post from an admin about two months ago saying "watch beta over the next week or two" and I have been, for many sets of two weeks, back to radio silence.

Dirk Broer
12-21-2018, 12:49 PM
Those micro-ATX socket AM4 boards cost next to nothing. The more expensive ones have four RAM slots and still can be bought below 75 Euro's here -except the B450 and X370/470 ones
(where Gigabyte is the exception: three X370 boards below 75 Euro's, amongst them the wulf in sheep's clothing: your old Gigabyte GA-AB350M-DS3H, which has a X370 chipset and not a B350 as you might think).
My own ASRock A320M Pro4 still is hard to beat for price/performance and can be bought for a price as low as 58 Euro's at the moment.

If you've given your mom your DDR4 RAM too, well, then it is another story of course...we're still waiting for RAM prices to return to a reasonable level.

At least four 'heavies' dropped their bunker almost simultaneously as their own WCG challenge at BOINCStats started at that time and they wanted to ensure first place at both our challenge and theirs (https://boincstats.com/en/stats/challenge/team/chat/1047) (which will run till the end of the year).

Shall we organize a 2019 Ramjet Memorial challenge? It is very quiet (challenge-wise) in December at BOINCstats (https://www.boincstats.com/stats/challenge/team/overview).
December even looks quiet at WCG itself (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewAllTeamChallenges.do?listType=2&sortBy=endDate&filterType=0&filterOpen=-1&filterDays=0&pageNum=1)

Good idea Dirk.

Do we want 7 days challenge from 18-25 Dec inclusive? Late entrants allowed and basis on time crunched? (like last year?)

Dirk Broer

Sounds good to me. 'basis on time crunched', so at WCG itself, not on BOINCstats where it is all credits based.

I completed the Contact Us and will wait for their feedback regarding creating the Ramjet Memorial Challenge 2019.

Not only at BOINCstats (https://www.boincstats.com/stats/challenge/team/chat/1069), but also at WCG (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/challenge/viewTeamChallenge.do?challengeId=9776), twice (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/challenge/viewTeamChallenge.do?challengeId=9777)
Perhaps we ought to change one of the WCG challenges into 'Points' or 'Results Returned'. Someting fishy at WCG challenges though: you can't select our challenges here (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewAllTeamChallenges.do?listType=2&sortBy=startDate&filterType=0&filterOpen=-1&filterDays=0&pageNum=2)

OK the WCG admin must have sorted out the problem with the first challenge and I created the one with 2019 in it today. I don't seem to be able to edit one to points so both are run time.

WCG is hampered by its glacial refresh rate -9 hours ago at the moment. In the BOINCstats (https://www.boincstats.com/stats/challenge/team/chat/1069) challenge TSBT has dropped their first bunker, that of DavidBAM.

A big thanks to all the crunchers who participated in this awesome showing for the ramjet memorial challenge. We would also like to thank other teams members who jumped in to help us maintain our spot as we needed every machine we had on it to hold spots #1 at boincstats and #2 at WCG. A big thanks to Dirk Broer and Vaughn for reminding us to set this up and all the great work they do for AMDUsers and the crunching community. This sure would have made Ramjet happy to see this level of participation at WCG. I am thankful we were able to run a large percentage of his crunching farm for the memorial race 3 years after his passing. The ramjet family sends thanks and appreciation for the great level of participation in this challenge.

Shall we organize a Ramjet Memorial Challenge again this year, or in January? BOINCstats doesn't seem the platform anymore for this, but World Community Grid itself (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewAllTeamChallenges.do) is alive and kicking, challenge wise. Present TN-Grid challenge at BOINCstats has 19 competing teams, Operatiion Equinox Challenge2020 (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/challenge/viewTeamChallenge.do?challengeId=10217) -were we are 7th presently- has 75 competing teams.

Yes we should plan for this important event on the AMD Users team calendar.

Personally, I'd like to commit my pharm to it but I will be concentrating efforts on the final PrimeGrid race for this year - Great Conjunction Challenge - beginning 21 December 13:22 UTC and ending 31 December 13:22 UTC.

I sure appreciate you guys thinking of this challenge. I know January is always a good time for us in the northern hemisphere as we can use all the heat we can get. I'm game for when it works for you guys. It may also give some time for the father in law to get his hands on a 5000 series Ryzen to aid in the challenge and a bit of pharm reorganization for me.

Hi team - we seem to have overlooked this thread so it is time to restart discussion. When can we run the Ramjet Memorial Challenge?

The PrimeGrid challenge is over for January and the whole month of February will find my GPUs dedicated to PrimeGrid but that leaves the CPUs to crunch (provided it isn't as hot as today 36°C at 4pm).

How long do you want to focus on WCG for Ramjet? I think last year was 7 days. I can start any day. From memory we posted it as a WCG Challenge and invited the usual suspects to join and it garnered a good response.

Dirk Broer
01-22-2021, 08:28 AM
WCG challenges generate lots more teams to join in than the BOINCstats challenges do -the latter seem to go steadily downhill too, occurence-wise.
Do we make it a credit challenge, or a runtime challenge?

NeoGen
01-22-2021, 10:28 PM
I need to create a new WCG account, messed up the last one. But that'll take just a few minutes so I'm ready any time too.
Seven days sounds good.
I'm old fashioned so I would always prefer credits over runtime, but either one is good.

I think we should let Jason decide: points or run-time challenge?

I presume All Projects is the preferred setting. I agree with 7 days. Let's start 24th and run to midnight of 31st to complete January.

Jason please send me a PM notification on the forum so I can setup the challenge asap.

Of course summer has brought a hot spell for a few days here in Sydney. 29C today but Monday and Tuesday they predict low 40s

Dirk Broer
01-23-2021, 09:27 AM
At least it is 'winter' on the Northern hemisphere, with temperatures around 5 degrees (Celcius).
No snow or ice yet...but no cooling problems either for a week of WCG.

Jason1478963
01-23-2021, 02:04 PM
I am sorry for the late response. I'm good with what you guys would like to do... runtime on all projects or open pandemic (covid) as many of us have been affected by this monster? I know it is difficult for our southern hemisphere friends to deal with the heat and timing is everything to avoid the hottest days.

Dirk Broer

It would be so good if WCG would have GPU workunits... I have all options open to receive everything including beta test units, but alas, no GPU work seems to come my way.

vaughan
01-27-2021, 10:12 PM
Also it would be good if WCG updated their stats more often, this 12 hour wait between updates is frustrating.

Great output from Jason who has hit the afterburners - the old blade server must be at full bore.

Personally, after a stifling hot Tuesday where we hit the high 30s that evening our third world power supply grid decided it was my suburb's turn for a blackout. So with the evening temperatures at 35C we had no electricity for 4 hours yet they still charge a dollar a day supply charges. The computers on UPSs shut down gracefully the rest died. Finally when power was restored I found that half the network was down as one of the 24 port stitches was screwed. My son worked out the issue was somehow the machines changed their IP addresses and changed VLANS. He sorted it out yesterday and things are running again as they should be.

It was weird as Alexa was able to control half the house automation but the Philips Hue lighting misbehaved. This took longer to resolve as he discovered that when you say to Alexa "Alexa turn on the kitchen light" Alexa talks to Amazon's servers over the internet and they talk to Phillips servers and then the reply comes to the Hue Bridge to apply the command. Would've been simpler if it happened on the local network instead of involving two external companies servers.

We have fired up the old blade server and more. That antique seems to add more heat to the house then I would like to deal with. We sure appreciate all the effort on this challenge. This is an amazing amount of work done in a short time for this challenge. Unfortunately the open pandemic research never materialized a GPU work unit that I know of.

Sorry to hear about the power outage as these always seem to cause problems for all of us. I seem to have some issues with my Hubitat smart home stuff as well if the UPS doesn't last through the power outage.

Great to see your post Jason, I'm sure Ramjet would be amazed by the response. Nature has been kinder since Tuesday with temps of 22-25C so I'm fully committed.
The computer room is a comfortable 29.4C today.

A big thanks to everyone again for your participation on this challenge:wav::wav:. He would surely be happy to see this kind of response and honored to see the team do so well in it. I think he would also be impressed to see his wife helping to run his antique crunching farm. This was an amazing amount of work accomplished by all teams involved during this.

I can only imagine trying to fight that kind of heat in a race. I'm near freezing and have similar temps do to that antique power hungry blade server. This is an amazing accomplishment trying to have big rooms full of these while fighting the heat of summer.

Hopefully this will be a better year for everybody :)

Yea, the last one was my fault, I think sometime in the beginning of GDPR implementations a few years ago I was supposed to log in and go in my account to do something but I didn't see their warning emails until much later, they had already closed my account and account recovery didn't work either.
Now I'm going to push this one for a while to build it up, just wish they had GPU applications available :icon_rolleyes:
