7nm Desktop CPUs have arrived to the masses! And they are kicking the Blue team's butt!:icon_mrgreen:

EDIT: Oh, and did I forget the GPUs too? :)

Price cut the day before launch already. As consumers we're off to a great start already! :icon_mrgreen:

So who is buying one?

So who is buying one?
As soon as prices drop. The 16-core/32-thread Ryzen 9 3950X looks like a very economical 24/7 cruncher with a TDP of 105 Watt.
Threadripper-like performance on the AM4 platform.

i'm seriously considering selling and replacing my Threadripper 1950X with the 3900X... less heat creation during the summer, less power consumption likely... (and similar results in Blender, which i sometimes do via Sheep-It/BURP)
plus i already have multiple coolers more than capable of cooling a 3000 chip, unlike the $90 U12S on my 1950X...

Sometime in September, I will be purchasing new Ryzen equipment, hopefully, Epyc.

I managed to place an order for the last remaining 3900X from my supplier. They say the top CPUs are in limited supply (to keep the prices high I guess).
Also ordered an ASUS Crosshair VIII Formula and some Corsair DDR4 CMK32GX4M2B3200C16.
Hope to receive it all on Friday 12th.
Separately I ordered another 8 Odroid-N2 from Hardkernel as these little computers love running Universe and Yoyo.

Running the 4GB model on Arch Linux|ARM AArch64 I guess?

I like that plan too, Q4 sounds like a good time. :)
I am finishing building up my little home server room, with a 42U rack, 24 outlet PDU, 240V dedicated circuit, dedicated room AC, and now a step down transformer for 120V devices is on the way. With all this I'll be ready to start expanding. No more random computer cases connected all over the house. :icon_lol:

heh, i assume you'll run as many PSUs at 240 as you can (for efficiency)?

Yup, that is the long term plan, although right now everything is still a mess and rigged up to the regular 120V circuit. Need to invest in some more power equipment. When all is said and done the 120V circuit will be dedicated for the AC only, and the 240 for the computing equipment, including the few bits and pieces that will have to work at 120V via the stepdown transformer.

It is not setup for BOINC yet as I'm trying to find a case that will fit the humongously complicated ASUS crosshair VIII formula X570 motherboard. It is way overkill for a "cruncher" but I wanted a top-of-the-line X570 chipset motherboard to accompany the (current) top-of-the-line AM4 CPU.
It is a shame the motherboard manufacturers don;t make crunching focussed motherboards. What I mean is I don't want pretty lights or ultra high quality sound card options, I just want pure speed and heat control.

You're in luck: the ASUS board is standard ATX. the Gigabyte Aorus X570 XTREME and MSI Prestige X570 Creation are EATX
Perhaps the ASRock X570M Pro4 would be more to your taste, it is Micro-ATX (µATX) and seemingly devoid of RGB. Plonk240 might object, VRM-wise...

well, for your NEXT X570 (lol), i think most if not all X570s have beefy enough VRMs to last forever...
here's Buildzoid's analysis of Asus's lineup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqHd_tFqvj0 ...even their $160 X570 (X570-P) seems to be good
here's a couple other (repost): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wmsTYK9Z3-jUX5LGRoFnsZYZiW1pfiDZnKCjaXyzd1o/htmlview?sle=true#gid=2112472504&fvid=1925177101

BOINC is installed and its running Primegrid - Proth Prime Search-LLR. Approximately 52 minutes per task, one task per thread (ie 24 tests per 52 minutes).
Stock cooler CPU temp 94C according to CPUIDs HWMonitor v1.40. Unfortunately, Speccy v1.32.740 doesn't reveal the CPU temp.

maybe try HWInfo64, too? i like it a lot... (the GPU is a lot more detailed if it's not integrated)

I don't know about the heat control, but you should perhaps look at the lineup of Asrock Rack (https://www.asrockrack.com/general/products.asp#AMD) motherboards. No pretty lights or sound cards, just server boards. Gigabyte (https://www.gigabyte.com/Server-Motherboard) has a likewise line.

wait... is that a typo or did you really mean CPU Temp at 94 degrees Celsius? That's about to burst in flames!

HWinfo64 says either 63C or 83C depending on which number you pick.
I'm looking at getting a Noctua NH-D15S to replace the stock cooler.

maybe consider this (https://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/8320/scythe-mugen-5-rev-cpu-cooler-review/index6.html)? it might be $30 cheaper (or more) than the D15/D15S... or the slightly more expensive Ninja 5 (https://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/8925/scythe-ninja-5-cpu-cooler-review/index.html) (still cheaper than Noctua)... or even cheaper than Mugen, the Windale 6 (https://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/8281/fsp-windale-6-cpu-cooler-review/index6.html)

I'd go for a Noctua NH-D15S with two extra 150mm fans -provided there is room on the mobo to place them.

Or if noise is not a problem slap 3x Noctua NF-F12 industrialPPC-3000 PWM (https://noctua.at/en/nf-f12-industrialppc-3000-pwm) and tie it down because it will fly off the socket! :icon_lol:

Three of these (https://noctua.at/en/nf-a15-hs-pwm-chromax-black-swap/specification) should be enough, and less noisy.

Your guessing has the same date as that of the media. Hopefully Threadripper 3 also comes out that day.

Just a bit of information for you guys seeking these new AMD Gems. The mining community is also after them for the random X algorithms. I'm not sure how it will play out when monero forks to this algorithm. There is rumor of CPU farms being built to work on these various coins moving to random X as it will not be as GPU friendly. It may drive our prices up or we may be able to find some great CPU deals if it becomes a short lived solution.

Can we get updates for the last 500 series of chipsets (e.g. X570S boards), plus an overview for the new 600 series?
