Are D2OL and Folding@Home still active doing some good? I noticed D2OL forums and website are kinda dead and they haven't had any news for over a year.

Yes. it's been getting that way.

There has been a bit of chat about it in our D2OL forum.

Actually Sengent and co. have me a bit hacked off about that. They are currently holding up the development of several Med Science projects.

If they can't do it or they are working on a master plan then they should say so, but leaving everyone hanging for this long is just rude, don't you think ?

I agree with you views on it AMDave. With the numbers of people that have been leaving the project you'd think that someone would notice or give a hoot, But that doesn't appear to be the case, which in turn is causing more people to leave the project.

Seems to be too many projects take a "could care less about the opinions of the volunteer crunchers" attitude.

I have crunched a good amount of RC5 (multiple accounts) and am becoming more and more critical of distributed.net's deteriorated response to crunching client problems/concersn/requests_for_help. It seems as organizations get past a certain size, they tend to forget how they got to be where they are, and grow feelings of superiority or whatever. And then they end up losing the bubble.

So my two main efforts of late have been the EON and Rieselsieve projects. Both Graeme and Lee, respectively, are very receptive to issues brought up by people using their client software. Neither projects are really big ones, but they both have a distinct and dedicated view of their scope of effort. Of course at one point in time, so did D2OL, F&H, distributed.net, and others. I guess about all one can do about it is vote with your participation in projects that respect the time/effort/monetary assets that the volunteer crunchers bring to the projects.

I liked Pirates@Home alot because of that. Eric Meyers was not only one of the developers as he was kind of the spokesman for the project. Every little change on the apps, every new version, he commented about it, said what had been changed, what to expect, and etc.
And always answered everyones doubts and questions almost every day. Asked people to post their experiences with the apps, bugs they found, and etc.
I imagine that it must be really tiring to give so much support to everyone and still have time to develop the project, (and considering that Pirates was a "side job", because he is a teacher) but he somehow managed to do all that.

Hello

As many feel, I’m running 2DOL for full power on two computers .Of source is it bad when they not upgrade to a client for AMD 3.200-64 but, or is informing all volunteers what is going on, but my computers works and is doing what they is created for. When other jump off, my chances to jump forward is so much greater. I’m not in need of information every day or every half year. When something happens, it happens. More than so is it not. I am running for good sake, not SETI, as not give you or me anything if we got sick. I don’t get my points rapidly, but what does it. But all run what they prefer, and it is OK for my.

Lagu you are right in that most of the time there are no problems with either Sengent projects - D2OL or TSC. However, there has been scanty responses from the project designers at Rothburg when volunteer crunchers asked what is happening with the results. As you say it is a Medical focussed project and the Community has a right to ask "are we doing anything useful?". There was some discussion about a future upgrade to the application software; was it version 2.5 or something? Anyhow that fizzled by the wayside.

72CJ5 is agree with your observation that some projects seem to hit a critical mass and lose interest in their volunteers. United Devices is another example of this. When it was small and starting to gain momentum I recall being involved in Alpha and Beta testing the new software before it was put in open circulation. This was good fun and the forums were lively as people posted their experiences. In addition, UD even sent the "volunteers" a T-shirt (damned hard to iron but what can you expect for a freebie") that advertised the project. It made me feel like the project appreciated my contribution.

Some of the projects we run are more taxing on our computers than others. As an example I find that DPAD / Muon1 is quite aggressive. It resets itself to Normal Priority even when you change it using Task Info 2002 after each task is crunched. It needs Jeff Gilchrist to write a DPAD Daddy application like he has for D2OL / TSC with D2OL Daddy. This would force the DC project to take a back seat when you actualy wish to use your computer for your own work.

I have an xp2100+ that gets too hot running SOB or DPAD / Muon1. It has a ThermalTake Volcano 7 HSF but this is VERY noisy at Medium or High fan settings, low is OK but obviously doesn't cool the CPU enough. It will happily run FAD or Ubero or DHEP or eOn especially when the latter 3 projects have lots of long pauses when they try to connect to the central servers. It is touch and go with other projects like Seti Classic, DNet or BOINC. Some days these will run, othertimes it reboots itself - must depend on how cool the ambient is in my office.

Lagu -- You are "right on" to continue crunching what you enjoy. After all, if one cannot have some fun doing this, then why spend the time, effort, and money on this crunching hobby at all? :)

vaughan -- I know what you mean by "noise" with the ThermalTake Volcano 7 as I've got one of those too. After firing it off and hearing it in operation, it now sits in it's box, and servers as my "standby" cooling fan for use when a fan burns out on a weekend when no store is open, until I can get to the store to purchase a quieter fan. :) However, when on the "full noise" setting, it definitely cools the cpu! :)
