So we got ourselves another project... another toy to play with

----------------- SHOFT@HOME -----------------
Details are scarce for those of us who do not understand russian, but Shoft@Home is a BOINC project created by a russian company, that will serve as base for them to supply the most varied services, as long as it's something that can be crunched.
It is rumoured that the project will go commercial after going through the first initial testing phases (right now it's in alpha stage). It is also rumoured that it may become a "for-pay" project by that time, meaning that it'll pay it's users for the cpu time spent crunching. These are two unconfirmed rumours that will only be cleared for good once someone that can understand russian could be so kind to translate the texts for us :P

----------------- DO I NEED TO KNOW RUSSIAN? -----------------
Anyways, it is a very straightforward project to join and run actually. Do not be scared with the word "russian" as respecting to the project itself and boinc you won't see a word in that language. (Unless you really are a russian, and I'll explain why...). The project website has an active translation system that depending on the region value set on your computer (usually it's your country) it translates the website to your language. So, to a russian it appears in russian, but to an american it appears in english... and so on. :)

----------------- WEBSITE -----------------
This is the website (click here) (http://public.shoft.net/)

----------------- HOW TO JOIN -----------------
To join our team, you can go through the website, create an account, and then find our team and join.... OR, you can click here (http://public.shoft.net/create_account_form.php?teamid=13) and create an account directly into our team. (It's easier isn't it? :P)

----------------- EXTRA COMMENTS AND LINKS -----------------
We are very well ranked in this project, and even with few members we're among the teams with highest output. Check it out yourself with the links I'm giving next...
Top Teams (http://public.shoft.net/top_teams.php?sort_by=total_credit) (note: this link you won't find on the mainpage)
Top Members (http://public.shoft.net/top_users.php?sort_by=total_credit) (check out how many of our team are here ;))

So if you wanna join in and help us, or maybe just belong to a winning team, you know what you have to do. :)
Any doubts, comments or questions... post below!

Oh and there website can be read in english.

My status report: So far so good. My first WU already crashed 1.5min into the WU.
09/11/05 00:32:04|Shoft@Home|Unrecoverable error for result wu_1122466010_86197_0 (Incorrect function. (0x1) - exit code 1 (0x1))
09/11/05 00:32:04||request_reschedule_cpus: process exited

My 2nd WU is almost done. Crunching a WU will take around 20min for me.

NeoGen
09-11-2005, 07:44 AM
Ah... so I'm not the only one having random crashes on a few workunits?

Yea, that happens... don't have a clue why.
And the funny thing is that this is dummy workunits for their alpha testing... maybe throwing in a few errored ones is part of their test?

AQUAJOE

This has an issue of running out of WU's.

Kinda have to baby sit this one.

outlawolf
09-12-2005, 06:00 AM
looks like i got my 6th project. now if only orbit@home would open up i would have an entire family of projects to crunch... and even with 5 current projects WU's seem to be hard to come by, at least on my main projects. Outage@Home (SETI) looks like it's good to go again (for now...), but LHC and Predictor are both down at the moment...

Edit: Predictors back, so i can upload those WU at least.

Lagu
09-16-2005, 06:01 PM
Hej!

I have downloaded Boinc to my old Intel and think to run Shoft. To my surprice, this project (work unit) need 15127,3 MB of disc space and I have only 4.54 GB free. Is anyone avare this? If you have 40 GB you don't got a message who say: You have not enough disc space. I couldn’t dream of such great use of space.

Lagu

NeoGen
09-16-2005, 06:17 PM
Never had such problem with Shoft. Only with climate prediction, but that one is understandable. They warn that it needs plenty of disk space. But shoft never used almost anything to me. Maybe it's some random boinc bug. Have you tried detaching from it and reataching the project again?

@72CJ5 - I don't know what setting you are talking about. Is it in the boinc general preferences? And about the Shoft workunits, they have a 2 days deadline, which is more than enough given how fast they are crunched.
Credits are usually granted instantly, altough during this week their stats have been failing a bit.

Lagu
09-16-2005, 06:45 PM
Hej!

I have uninstall Boinc twice and reinstall it (using the same exe-file) and i is registred on Shofts "Top parcipants" with my Intel and the agent shows OK. The message says; "insuffient work, request more".

To me the Top Teams (http://public.shoft.net/top_teams.php?sort_by=total_credit) page, sorted by Total Credit, appears with "Generated 11 Sep 2005 14:25:05 UTC" on the bottom.

and I have also noticed that BOINC does not like Linux.

Hello

I have run Softh for a while. Under this time a WU have been crunched. Then it has been sent. A new task have arrive and once again the same melody. After I joined Rosetta and began to run their WU, I got a lot of work units from Shoft instead of one and one. The same phenomenons happen on my other computers. Is there a concurrency between those projects that Boinc “know” and correct the situation if the settings are so that they both will run 60 minutes each?

Lagu :D

UM Hey NEO done with the next 10k . :sleepy2:

NeoGen
09-22-2005, 12:35 PM
Very good! And how about a third challenge? :P

Through history there's always been a rivalry between the USA and Russia, hasn't it? And you're just 5,000 credits away from putting the usa ahead of Russia... so what do you think? :P

I won't say to compete with that guy on first place "bob" because that one is even outputting more than you
Unless that is, if you would put even more machines on it and take out absolute world number 1 on the project... ;)

AQUAJOE
09-22-2005, 12:53 PM
Well I can throw another 20 3.0 HT's at it.

AQUAJOE
09-22-2005, 05:51 PM
:?: So how do we get BOK or free-Dc to add shoft to there list so it can come up in the stats? They added Rosetta.

NeoGen
09-22-2005, 08:52 PM
I think he can't add it for the time being. As far as I know, his boinc stats derive from Boinc Synergy's processed xml files, and Boinc Synergy on its turn goes out to get them on the projects websites. So only the projects who actually put out xml stats files are the ones featured in Boinc Synergy's stats site, and thus are the ones that go into Free-DC's stats.
:-(

But fear not because our statsman Ototero doesn't depend on either one of them, and keeps track of our position and points (both team and individually) so that we all get the credit we deserve on our stats page :)

Ototero
09-22-2005, 10:19 PM
Rosetta and Xtremlab stats added.

AQUAJOE
09-23-2005, 01:15 AM
Ototero one thing I miss in our stats is daily points I like to watch to see how many points I get a day . I base my work loads to projects on that.

Is there a way we could add that?

Ototero
09-23-2005, 11:29 AM
I'll look into it Aqua, obviously it's possible. Just wondering about how the output will look.

EDIT

I've made the changes to just the SOB column.

Discuss. :D :D

Empty_5oul
09-23-2005, 12:13 PM
i think it looks good.

possibly now it is getting more complex along the top, we need that row to have the column headings so for viewing we know what numbers means what.

AQUAJOE
09-23-2005, 12:48 PM
I agree with empty. Oldtimers would know but we have alot of newcomers that we would be explaining it to.

Other then that I think it looks good can you throw it on Einstein and shoft to see what it looks like?

AQUAJOE
09-23-2005, 08:51 PM
Well I am about to open a can of whoopa$$. So watch the numbers go up.

I just hope they have enough work for me.

Empty_5oul
09-23-2005, 10:09 PM
AQUA - whilst it is stable with plently of units set your preferences to contact the server minimum times ( under preferences as "connect to network"). this gives you a decent cache so you get more work.

whilst a project has units it is best to put this up a bit (providing you can lose a little disc space). then if it goes down or whatever for any reason you have extra work so you dont lose out. then again when it gest low on work it is best to have 0.1 so you hammer the server constantly asking for units - the more time you requst units the greater the chance you get one (though you cache and store little so can be caught out).

AQUAJOE
09-23-2005, 11:11 PM

Shoft is created by a russian company with the purpose of someday to offer distributed computing solutions to its clients, but right now it is only a test platform very much alike Pirates@Home, Lattice, or PrimeGrid.
For now we're only there for the sport. There's no money to be seen from it. If someday it becomes commercial we'll deal with it then.

Hello

It is nice to use more computers than I have myself. In Sweden, there it is strongly forbidden to use my employer’s computers for distributed computing and porn. I can lose my work if I not respect that. Why is it so? Yes, the employer mean we shall work not have fun. They are even afraid to get viruses that can stop all Internet access between their mother company and head company. If it not should be forbidden, I should use my employer computer.
How is it for you out there? Is there any similar experience to above?

It all depends on the company. Most are the same way. And that is a big NO.

Intel Pentium 440BX II, 350 MHz 128 MB 100 Dimm-SDRAM Ram (New 1999)
Family 6 Model 5 Stepping 1
Core speed: 347. MHz
FSB: 99.3 MHz

31 minutes, 37 seconds

AMD Athlon™ 64 3200+ (Sempron) 2.25 GHz, 1 GB DDR-SDRAM Ram (New 2004)
Family F, Model C, Stepping 0
Core speed: 2247.4 MHz
System bus: 204.1 MHz
Memory frequency: 160.5 MHz

Don't mind that "lamer" emoticon, I'm sure it was without offense, just to brighten up the post.

I don't know if you read the whole thread, but he was fighting for 1st place (on Shoft's top participants) against you until a while ago, when he saw that people were sneaking behind his back on Einstein, so now he's there getting his 1st place (on the team) again and maybe later he'll come back to fight you again... so, technically you've won round one! :)

And even if you don't wanna join us, you're always welcome... either way do come around more often and leave some posts... I am (and surely more people too) really interested in knowing what are you running there... a Cray XD1, or maybe IBM's Big Blue???

Hello

It seems to be wrong stats for me in Shoft. I have got 224.72 recent average credits. When looking at Top participants there I have only 188.98 in credits. Checking our team’s stats there, I have the right credits. Also, the agent shows far too low credits. Vaughan as have been in the back of me is now before me. This can’t be right. I hope they will set the right stats. It is difficult yes, impossible to write on the Russian language.

I have disappeared from Shoft. I have been running this project over I mouth I think and received 224 resent average credits. Suddenly my score fell down to 189. I continue to run it but today my score was 170  This got me to refuse this project. It is a scandal that they not have a forum for English spoken peoples or at least an E-mail address to the Admin if we got problems or need to contact them in any situations.
I have never seen such bad situation in any project. There is always easy to communicate to each other from Admin to other peoples.
I have instead joined Predictor using my Athlon 1001. It takes 1.5 hour running their tasks. It is yet better than Shoft if anything happen.

Happy SMART crunching to all who have contributed to run this Target :)

Lagu, this little boy (the avatar) as nothing know.

Lagu, you're looking at the RAC (Recent Average Credit) which always floats up and down depending on how much you have been crunching. It's just a measurement of recent activity to show how much active have you been lately related to others.
Your real score is on the Total Credit, of which you have 8,896.08 credits now that I check it... and you're on the top 10 participants worldwide! :)

NeoGen's right, your RAC can drift around a lot depending on how many WU's you run for a Project. If you run less than you've been running then your RAC will drop, run more & it goes up. I personally don't even pay much attention to the my RAC Credit because I jump around from Project to Project so much.

I haven't had any problems with Credit's @ the Shoft Site to this point ... :)
