I think that this project might appeal to lots of us because it is has the protein folding theme. We seem to like those projects - genome, folding, distributed folding, Parabon, Entropia Fight AIDS at Home, UD hmmer, Folderol, Popular Power, and last but not least, Beerknurd and my favourite Ubero - all share some similarities - Life Sciences.

I have joined Rosetta@athome (Rosetta is a very beautiful name compared to other name of project). ;) I notice the WU is as large as 16.93 MB. It will take 137 times, 39 min. and 59 seconds. I will try Rosetta and see how I go. I’m running Dimes and another program on my AMD 64. I don’t know if I shall disable other works or if I can run these yet. I run Shoft every 60 second so they exchange time. I think as they allow teams it is good to run.
NeoGen how long takes a WU for you?

My workunit that I sent in already took around 26 hours on my XP 2000+
You'll see that the first 66% are a breeze, and then it really drags itself until it finishes... lol

I've got another workunit already here and working. This will be my last one for now, as I need to push us up on Primegrid. We're losing ranks there alot. Nobody seems to have much interest on it besides me so far.

Been trying to convert some movies into DVD. But converter makes into 2 dvds when quality is too high. So I've been reconverting the files w/ lesser quality.

EDIT: Don't worry, I'm not gone from crunching. I'll be back in few days time. :)

version 4.77 of the Rosetta@home application is available for Windows and Linux as of September 22, and version 4.76 is available for Mac OSX as of September 24. 4.77 is optimized for Windows and is much faster than the older versions.

Anyone know how much faster? If it's faster, I may reattach to this project.

I tried it in Windows first and have been immensely dissapointed with the results.

I ran it in Linux yesterday and more than quadrupled my output per hour.

Unfortunately the amount of credit awarded is still massively pathetic.

I turned it off again.
I have better (more rewarding) things to do.

This is on the same machine I just changed the OS. And I need to go back to Linux on that machine within a week maybe two.

I ran it on a 3.0 Ghz SMP (dual) under SuSe 9.3

Number of CPUs........................2
Operating System......................Linux 2.6.11.4-21.9-smp
Measured floating point speed.....632.27 million ops/sec
Measured integer speed.............1180.19 million ops/sec

It chewed them up and spat out the seeds in much less time than in Windows on the same hardware.

CPU time..................................14262.002845 (linux)
CPU time..................................55294.375 (Win2000)

well...so close to 4 times faster that you'll have to get out the calculator to tell the difference ;)

None the less, I got stuff all for the effort.

I was very pleased with the change in pace but rather dissapointed about the end result.


I'm guessing SuSe 10 beta is still full of debug code

Puh Rosetta! When I joined this project, I was not to far from 20 best ranked crunchers. Today I’m number 387. I got too little work. Mostly shoft whish is generously with work. I have set both to use 60 min each. I ponder upon to stop Rosetta because I have no chance to accelerate. Any who need help in any project?

You may be right about SuSE Beta having a lot of debugging code. But I wouldn't think that would slow down that much (50%).

And I'm not too worried about 2003, she is behind a good firewall , and no important information on her. I just figured the way Microsoft is on updates it would be too much of a slowdown.

I wonder how Open Enterprise Server or SUSE Enterprise Server 9 would act like :-k
