Chaz and I need some help on this project otherwise Team-TNT will catch us very soon. Chessbrain is easy to run. It plays really well alongside Gomez Peer in addition to most other DC Projects I've tried. Just download and install the latest version located here:

http://www.chessbrain.net/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=606

and edit/modify the cbspn.conf file thus:
uid=your handle (eg. I use vaughan, and Chaz uses Chaz, pretty simple huh?)
team=AMD Users (not AMD_Users the mistake I made once  )
country=US (for USA, eg I use AU for Australia, OK?)

When I run it, it takes a lot of memory, but doesnt use much/any CPU. How long before I can see my stats?

You can adjust the memory settings within the cbspn.conf file.
Stats are available with hourly updates courtesy of Dyyryath's Arachnid stats here (for Distributed Folding, Chessbrain and Folding At Home):

A half dozen or more nodes running would help, and you dont need to run max memory, that is unless you can spare it. I have tried Max(128mb) High(64mb) and am currently running with Mid(32). Havent tried Low(16mb) yet.

I have 1024 megs of ram, so I go all the way.

Jeff

It will use my CPU at 100% for maybe a minute or two, then back down to 0%. What can I do so that my cpu is always at 100%?

It wont run all the time, only when it finds work to do.This is why i run it alongside Lifemapper or SOB. I set Life or SOB to low priority, and Chess to Below_normal, so that when it finds work it does what it has to do then your main project resumes.
The amount of ram impacts the length of the searches it does, the more ram you allocate, the longer it searches i believe.
However, the more ram you allocate, the less clients you can run. i have been using less ram and running more simultaneous clients. Dropping the ram doesnt help unless you run more clients. I started with 2 clients and memory maxed, and now am running no less than 6 clients with memory at 32mb(mid). ill leave it here for a day then drop to 16mb and add more to see if it improves or not.
This is how im running at the moment.
win XP machines with 512mb 6 clients@32mb
win2k machines with 512mb 8 clients@32mb
dualie w/win2k and 768mb 15 clients@32mb

That little note in the cbspn.conf file about using no more than half the system memory, I havent had problems yet......

Put one of mine on it. Can I run TSC or SOB at same time?

chaz
01-09-2004, 07:03 PM
Yes you can, it will be idle alot of time, so i put my main project at low priority, and Chessbrain at below normal, this way when it gets work(which usually lasts for a few seconds), itll finish and your main project will resume.

Well my stats not showing up yet (6 hours) and Chessbrain keeps crashing on my W2K system. Says it performs an illegal function?

Here are my stats! Why are they not listed under Amd Users. I modified the file and put team as "AMD Users" without quotes of course.

should look like this in the cbspn.conf file

# Set UserID (you may use an email address or your name.
# For example:
# uid=Joe Smith
# uid=joe_smith@temple.com
uid=Chaz

# Set DC team name
teamname=AMD Users

Thats exactly like mine. hummm I wonder why want show up.

Here is the first part:

#
# CBSPN Server
# configuration file
#

# Set UserID (you may use an email address or your name.
# For example:
# uid=Johnny Smith
# uid=johnny_smith@temple.com

I have the same problem of not being on the team. I couldn't seem to get the 21201-01 client to connect but the 2.0407.01 version works good. also added another cpu and gnome system monitor is reportng 101% if only I could get that to 300 or 400%

Is there a way to run it in background other than as a dos box minimized to task bar? Like TSC, SOP, etc.

Bionic_Redneck
01-11-2004, 03:29 AM
hideit works good for hiding the ms-dos consoles in win98se and winME haven't tried with winXP so not sure if it is compatible. http://www.expocenter.com/hideit/

When I ran folding@home from windows I would edit my registry to run the client when machine booted up that way it stayed hidden also you might be able to hide it by making it a scheduled task. Lastly with winxp, winNT, win2k you can use firedameon to set dc client up as services so they are hidden http://www.firedaemon.com/

Thanks. I have XP, I'll try as service.

Anyone else have the problem of the program closing ever so often on its own. I'll turn it on, minimize to task bar, come back 30 minutes later and the program is not on task bar anymore.

No, your not running yourself out of ram are you?

vaughan
01-11-2004, 10:48 PM
Happens sometimes to me, usually when I run out of free RAM trying to run just too many concurrent instances of CB.

and who says windows is good for nothing. If this keeps up I will pass jlangner in a couple hours

I have 528mb DDR400, I have the setting set on max so I'll lower to high and try that.

Bionic_Redneck
01-13-2004, 02:08 AM
That must be a typo b/c I don't believe 528 mb of ram is possible. I am going to assume it's 512. still you shouldn't have any problem with runniing out of memory.

Jeff

Hehe, I didn't even notice that the first time I read it.

I started doing grub just a few minutes ago. It's pretty cool but there is no linux binary it has to be built. well the project is a web crawler but you can set it to use how ever much bandwidth you want. I am using the default 256kb/s. Just another project that use no cpu cycles

Running it at a lower setting will allow you to run more instances of it. I use 16mb(low) and run 12 simultaneously on XP, 16 on win2k.

Would be nice if I could limit bandwidth on Chessbrain, I had to call my ISP and ask for a detailed definition of "Excessive Bandwidth Usage", I cant even connect with emule anymore, the modem's send/recieve lights no longer flicker, they are solid all the time, lol.
I can still download and browse though, so i dont think im really sending large amounts of data, so I shouldn't have any problems with my account being terminated (I HOPE).

Jeff
01-13-2004, 08:00 PM
Yea, I saw an article about that on Slashdot. Look out in the mail for a letter from your ISP. But, if I were you, I would play it safe and shut of emule, JMO though.

I am about to give up. No matter howmany pcs I us the program is closed shortly (less than 1 hour). BTW, yes I meant 512. lol

Bionic_Redneck
01-14-2004, 04:20 AM
It might be possible for you to set it up as a schduled task to run if chessbrain isn't running. That way if the client dies it gets restarted again.

jlangner

k, I told to run whenever computer is idle for 1 minute so if it crashes, should start back, I think.

They have new clients out but doesn't find route to server for me. hopefully all the windows users don't have this problem. worst yet the older client now goes straight into standby so looks like I'm toast

I have several of the new clients running now and all have been doing something for several hours but it doesn't seem to be counting twords the current stats??? Chessbrain seems to be in the process of changing everthing for phase 3 and the record attempt. Will just leave running and see what happens!?!? :?:
