Hello Guys, I wonder if you can help?

I looked through the stats and noticed that some of you have both AMD 3800X2 and Opteron 170.

How much better is the 170 at cruching.

Thanks.

I found this here, (http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=28&threadid=1733490&enterthread=y) maybe it will help you.

"Opterons are the cores that past the most stringent of testing, because they are meant for servers/workstations and 24/7/365 use without failing. (This is also why they overclock so well.) The ones that fail, but still past stringent testing become the X2 4800s and FXs. The rest become regulars A64s/X2s.

The only reason the Opteron 165 is cheaper than the X2 3800+ is because it's only clocked at 1.8Ghz while the X2 3800+ is clocked at 2.0Ghz. The Opteron 170 which is clocked at 2.0GHz costs $80 more than the X2 3800+. And the Opteron 165 will reach 2.0GHz without even breaking a sweat. The X2 4400+ is the cheapest X2 with 1MB L2 cache per core, clocked at 2.2GHz and costs $200 more than the Opteron 165. Comparing the Opteron 175 to the X2 4400+ you can see that server-class quality does cost extra. A 400Mhz stable overclock should easily be obtainable on most if not all Opteron 165s. So there you go. $525 CPUs performance for $300."

It sounds to me like the Opterons would be better (wish i had read this before getting a X2 48) for the 24/7 crunching like we would be doing. They would also be cheaper and easier to OC, if what he/she is saying is true.

Thank you good info :)

First of all WELCOME!!!! :wav:

Crunching is all about clock speed. Very little else matters (cache, RAM speed, RAM timings). Personally I'd just get a 165 and run it at 222x9 (to make it 2GHz) which the processor would have absolutely no problem doing w/o any increase in voltage. And any decent PC3200 should handle 222MHz, if not just run it on a divider. It pays to do a little research on overclocking, as it can save you quite a bit of money. ;)

BTW: I have 2 3800+ X2s and an Opty 175 (complete waste of money that doesn't OC as high as my 3800s)

Thanks mitro

I'm still not sure what to get, money is an issue so maybe a 3800x2

Do the AMD boards need a 24pin motherboard plug on the PSU? The PSU I have only has a 20pin plug.

Thanks again Guys :)

Well the 165 should be cheaper than the 3800, so thats why I suggest it. Not to mention the larger cache of the Opty.

As far as the PSU, it really depends on the board. I have a 939 board with a VIA chipset that only takes 20 pins, but my DFI NF4s take 24. A 20-pin PSU CAN be used on a 24-pin mobo, but its not usually recommended. depending on the motherboard I'm sure we can recommend a new PSU if its needed.

Thanks very much for the kind offer, but I'm already in a team and even with a my Dual Core running, I don't think your team has anything to worry about from us, well at least for the moment :D
