What is Majestic-12?

Majestic-12 is a distributed computing project developed by Alex Chudnovsky. The purpose is to create a new World Wide Web Internet search engine for faster and more up to date information than now existing search engines. It uses software called MJ12node. This project is a UK based one. You can help crunch using your idle computer and bandwidth using the software called MJ12node which is a node as you can download and configure as you want.

Requirements

OS: Windows XP and Linux
You must have at least 1200 MHz and a broadband internet connection. It is a fact, this project uses a lot of bandwidth.

How can I get it?

You can download MJ12node from this link: http://www.majestic12.co.uk/projects/dsearch/download.php

http://www.majestic12.co.uk/projects/dsearch/mj12node/manual/ (Step by step instructions)

What happens when I have downloaded the node?

First you will unpack the downloaded file and when the agent appears you will have to register in the Profiles >> Option field by filling in your E-mail address, nickname, your connection speed, and so on. As soon as you have registered and it have been verified, you get 1 or more buckets containing 10.000 Url`s each and you are on your way to crawl those Url`s. When you have crawled 10.000 Url`s the node begins to archive it and when it is done the WU is sent back to the server and you have earned 10,000 points.

How can I join the AMD Users team?

If you want to join our team: http://www.majestic12.co.uk/projects/dsearch/teaminfo.php?id=2

Bit of info:

Setting MJ-12 to run at "full speed when idle" basically halts some other applications. I lost most of a day's worth in D2OL - apparently because the core that was cruching D2OL was taken over by MJ-12, or because D2OL could not communicate with the server (If that was the case then it didn't seem to prevent Proteins from updating). I haven't determined exactly what happened, but the extra 10% - 15% I was getting out of MJ-12 with that setting checked wasn't worth the loss of D2OL productivity.
