ATI 9800 Pro repair

Hay guys, I have a friends ATI 9800 Pro which he bought on e-bay...when I put it in his or my computer the screen image has lines thru it , horizontal and the entire length of the monitor. I assume it was damaged by overclocking...don't know. If you start it up without the extra power cable you get a warning but the image is normal looking.
Any ideas if this can be fixed??? and how??? the seller offered no warrenty and it is used so ATI won't fix it....any help???

That's an odd problem...
If the card works (passes the boot tests, and etc) couldn't that be a problem with the monitor connection? Maybe that graphics card female socket where the monitor cable is plugged in is damaged or something?

But on the other hand you say that not using the extra power cable the image is ok... so that could mean some kind of an electrical problem?

I really can't say what the problem is, but these are my first guesses...

(I'm excluding the possibility of drivers problems... never heard of a driver that would cause something like that.)

Yea...I have an identical card in my main computer, I put this other one in and the lines appear, kinda thick lines too...it's been a while since I've built my friends computer and used this card but I tried it several times and always the same thing :D

I had a 9800 that did the same thing. Oddly enough if I increased the voltage on the 12v rail the problem went away. Unfortunately most people don't have adjustable PSUs. I'm just curious what mother boards this happens on? My 9800 was fine on my NF2 boards, but on NF3 boards it was a no-go without the bump in voltage.

I tried it on my Asus A7n8x -E Delux MB, Antec Neopower 480 watt PSU,XP3200 CPU :D
