New project people!! :D
http://www.readyresponse.org/index.php?item=distributed&opt=2
Actually, it isn't new at all. It's several years old, but only a few days ago it has implemented teams. Some of our members have for a long time been fooling around with it, and competing between eachothers, and when teams were implemented it was no surprise that we would be ranked 1st! :D
What is Ready Response DLV? (also know as Red Library)
Red Library is Ready Response's search engine with a difference - every single link in the database is hand picked (at present 7000+ links) and categorized. It is a tremendous resource and used by many other sites/visitors worldwide, but as with all search engines there is always a possibility that a link in the database will become a broken a link (404).
The idea behind this project was to make a client application which downloads links from the Red Library server, validates them (i.e. checks to see if they are 404 or not) and then returns the results back to Red Library. The Red Library server will then double check all the links that come back reported as 404, and remove the links if they are found to be down over a period of 7 days or longer. Basically - the more people that run the client, the less bad links will be present in Red Library!
The project itself is very simple. You start up the client and it will fetch a group of 100 links to validate. Every 5 minutes (default interval, can be changed) the client will download 5 of those pages (can be raised up to 10) and check for 404's. Once those 100 links are finished, it will fetch another group of 100 and repeat the process. It takes very little bandwidth as you can calculate. Probably as little as the Dimes project.

i am only validating 5 links at a time.
I have selected 10 from the dropdown and hit "enter" to make sure it is selected :?
any ideas?

I noticed that too.
After selecting 10, you have to click the stop button and then close the application. Otherwise the change will not be saved and the next time you start it, it will start going 5 links at a time again...
Linux-coming soon.....sigh.

Yea... it's very rare to see a Mac version being rolled out before a linux version...
I always thought (and still think that) Mac versions would be harder to make than Linux ones.
i'm getting timeout after timeout here when it tries to connect. anybody else? we may start a discussion over at team Ninja HQ to see if this is really ready for the Vault,as there have been complaints about this problem. hopefully its temporary, and not a case of this projects resources being overwhelmed too fast, too soon.
any comments here or over at TN would be appreciated.
NVM
Have you tried to restart the client? I.E shout it down and start it again?
Lagu ;)
yes i did. i also read this at the DLV forums about the timeout problem:
I guess it's just because we have underestimated the number of users for the 'first version' of DLV and our server can't handle all the request fast enough.
But you just have to wait a little bit as we're working on this problem. And if everything goes as planned the new client (out soon) will reduce the serverload a lot. And it also reduce the users traffic a bit more too.

im on it :)
Hi
Have you guys got wery little points today? I run this project 7/24 and today only earned 134 points so far. It seems as I have lost a lot of points from kl. 00.00 - 16.45. There is somheting wierd witih the Client or it is the server?
Sending and receiving new links takes 10 minutes. It is scandal!
I used to be in the top but today I´m number 34 in the daily rank.

Hi
I have write 3 PM´s in Redy Responces forums. Read them if you want.

They most likely are overloaded with so many users joining the project.
Give them a bit of time and I'm sure they'll find a way to fix it.
Yeah, we know they isn´t too rapid or how?

Hi
To you who are running Red Library.
Watch this link and read what Wang says: http://www.readyresponse.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1892
Lagu :)
Hi
Anyone of you as know how Red Library are calculating the points.
My 3 clients shows 2.000 validated URL´s each. It should be 6.000 together. However Red Librarys ovn stats page shows 6.700 done.
It is strange and I can´t figure out how the points is calculated.

Go figure... But if it's more points that they're giving you, and not less, don't complain :P
Hi guys!
Have you tried Red Library? It seems as not so many new members have joined that project.
Red Library use mych little recourses and is a god complement to havier project. It use your connection every 5 minutes only for a chort time.
Try it and you will be satisfied. It is selfwalking and need very, very little babysitting. On ly check the client when you feel for it.

Can it run alongside BOINC nicely?
or will it still lots of CPU time from BOINC?

Yes runs alongside any project.
No takes almost no CPU cycles.

I've just joined a couple of systems to the team!
...only 900k when minimized and barely any CPU resources when validating! :D

Right will run it on my main rig for a while and see what happens :)

Update: it takes some CPU cycles when initialising but after that its pretty tame. My xp3000+ has a hard time with it so I stopped it running on that rig. Dunno why but it sucks 100% cpu for ages, so bad that windows takes forever to finish booting. Kill Red Library and everything returns to normal. Weird thing is it only behaves this way on the 3000.

Forgot to let it through my firewall
Will download Threadmaster I think and run threadmaster, restricting the CPU usage of DLV. :D Also means I could possibly run some other projects like this one.
I had noticed it took about 100% CPU whilst verifying on startup but missed the parts when it was checking links. Did have it set to 10 links every 5 minutes. Will have another play when I finish these CAD excercise's and get back home

I just downloaded Threadmaster and installed it.
By default dnetc dropped 5million, cpu temp dropped from 55c to 41c.
So I started to fiddle with TM settings, nothing worked, I couldn't get my apps to run fast again.
Even when I un-installed it, there was no improvement. So I rebooted, now I'm back to "normal".
If anyone knows an easy way to throttle back some apps, I'd like to hear about it.
This is off topic. Perhaps any replies should be in another thread (no pun)

I don't get it! ...someone help me out here!
If you can only check a maximum of 10 links every 5 mins and each user is only allowed 3 clients along with points which are just cumulated on the quantity of links you have done, then he who starts first stays first and he who starts last...
Not being competitive, well maybe a little, but what is the point in teams if it only shows the teams with the largest and oldest users! ...it's a bit lame if you ask me!
I understand the role and the reason for the client but they could at least add a bit more competitive edge to the scoring if they want to use teams!
There you go, my rants over for this evening!!! :? ;)

Like you say, theoretically there is maximum per 24 hours. There no competition. But if you look at the daily stats on the RR site, you'll see many people have exceeded this number.

Maybe making use of the gravitational waves (see Einstein@Home) you can stretch space-time a little making that a day for you has >24 hours?

Everytime you restart it, it does ten links (if set to that.)
Maybe they do a lot of restarts

I took note of what NeoGen told me to do.
It was quite easy really. Apparently a heavy object, such as our sun, distorts the spacetime fabric; I thought about this for a while and decided to put my desk lamp on top of my PC and switch it on, instantly my PC is now crunching 24hours every few minutes.
Tomorrow I will attempt to add more mass by placing a heavy book on top, that should shave off a few more minutes.
Who needs liquid cooling when they have a desk lamp! ;)

I could do with that brick to give it some more 'welly'!!!
