Just for the record I think you all should read this (http://us-distributed.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=317). US-Distributed is preparing a big attack at UBERO's project.

well i know that we are 3rd and if US Disributed do over take. They are the ones that are going to be wasting CPU time because acording to what the co-ordinater is saying in the forums is his not really working on the project even though for the past year he has been saying that he has up and coming project coming soon and still nothing is happening. so in my view i think the project is dead

Grid on Tap is dead..... Ubero even though is recycling work, is still worth points. Furthermore, I dont like to lay down and let someone pass us by, even though it is inevitable, it cant hurt to try and slow them down.

My cousin is in US Distributed and they are running D2OL but they are tiny member wise compared to us. We could steamroll them easily. I haven't looked at how many members they have on Ubero. Better they run Ubero though than something important. LOL

Bionic_Redneck

I agree with you that ubero is the last project anyone should be running since it's not doing anything but waste power and resources. hey I just came up with an idea if people are just caring about there points so much I'll start a new roject were you just send me money in US dollar of course then you get a point for each dollar spent no need to even have any computers running.

Maybe we can get the repository to de-list Ubero until they are running something worth computing (anything new). Although that would probably kill us in the ratings.

Contrary to what has been said about my views on the merits or otherwise of Ubero on another DC forum, I believe Ubero is a very good DC platform. Unfortunately those posters were blinded by their own ignorance. I was not saying stop Ubero. I said run something useful to humans instead of the same old tasks. My comments specifically related to one guy's boast about how good they're doing compared to us and several other teams (like MacNN). This was mis-understood by that team to be me ordering them to cease Ubero. Garbage - are they that thick that they cannot read and understand an opinion? My observation that it is a pity they are re-running the same old tasks is echoed here by ArminiusC and Bionic_Redneck (and others have also said same). Scott Hodson once posted at Ubero forum that he thought of switching ubero off but decided it still had a role to play in DC'ing even if it is only to show it still runs, people still run it and derive stats pleasure. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think he said something along the lines of - he'd switch it off when no one ran it anymore.
I'm sure we could put up a pretty strong challenge to them if we wanted to but why waste cpu cycles?
One thing this whole episode has done is get them to move cpus from other projects and onto something they are way behind the leaders on. I wonder why they don't target Free-DC in DistributedFolding? Its probably because Free-DC is so well ranked. Its easier to throw jibes at the little guys.

Uumm, looks like this project isn't so dead after all. The very ones who were preaching about "wasteing cycles" are the same ones who have now stepped up there production to desparately hold onto 3rd place.

Interesting....I wonder....? ? ?

Here comes my first post......

I decided to switch on the laptop and help the team a bit more. For some reason the 2.2 mobile athlon chucks out more results than my 2.4 athlons.
All my machines are running IBM java, it seems to be about 20% faster.

Anyway, I took a look at the Ubero home and got a bit of a shock. I'm currently fastest member

Btw, this is a nice board.

Create a shortcut to runubero.bat, and in the target line put this: "C:\Program Files\IBM\Java14\jre\bin\java.exe" -showversion -cp Agent.jar ubero.agent.Agent -text

I still don't get why Pokerhasi's agent is so much faster than mine. If let his go all day he would hit over 2000 per day. The highest i've gotten is in the 1340's. I don't know how he does it. I'll run 2 sessions of Ubero for the rest of the night to see if it make a diffrence. My computer boggs down a little when I run 2.

He's running 3 instances in his machine. :shocked!:

The result's of running more than one instance on the same machine will not change the overall WU Total, because every instance will share the cpu speed equally (depending on the priority).

The possible reasons are that Pokerhasi's has a faster machine somehow or he has more than one machine reporting with the same Agent name.

Example:
I can have my AMD running on my first agent name, that is "Athlon XP 1900+" and at the same time put my other too machines running with this same agent name. In this case i do not share the same cpu but i make a kind of vvvvvvvvvvvery little cluster running ubero without the need of physical connections between them :D .

The WU count will all go to the same agent leading to a very inflated WU per machine.

Regards

PS: Regarding the fact that i do not bileave that Pokerhasi's is doing this, the main cause could be the use he is not giving :) to the pc during the run of ubero and/or the pc configuration...
And you Guest ( i guess it's Beerknurd here) beside having a faster pc are or is not so well configured to the top performance...

Beerknurd
05-27-2004, 03:56 AM
Well how can I make it faster???? Or it it too hard to explain???

numibesi
05-27-2004, 12:29 PM
That depends alot from what you have inside your box.

But generaly the next topic's help the increase of WU prodution (not much):

- Not using the PC leaving it only processing WU.
- Using IBM Java (I guess you have that already)
- Overclocking your machine, in all ranges, not only cpu (ATENTION: This may send your pc to trash so procced with caution!!! At your own risk.)

Not muth to do on ubero besides this, any new info is also appretiated ;)

Beerknurd
05-28-2004, 02:33 AM
I would hate to mess up my new computer. So I guess I'll have to be happy with 1700 WU's per day.

Pokerhasi
05-28-2004, 01:14 PM
Just to take away all misunderstandings:

I do not run the same client name on different machines, I just run 3 instances on one client with 150MB RAM for each instance.
em99010pepe told me, that IBM Java runs much faster, and it does, so I´m useing the IBM....
My main machine is an P4-3200 with 1024MB RAM and has never been overclocked.... it runs all day and I only sometimes use it for gameing or sth which uses much performance, so nearly 24h of a day are there for researching ;o) I think the main thing which boosts the performance is, that the Hyperthreating speeds up the instances..... I would say you have got abour 150% Performance, if there are allways at least two instances running. That means you have to run at least three instances, to max out your machines performance, because there will nearly allways be at least two instances running, while one is sending and receiving WUs.

I can´t remember any day, where I hit the 2000 WU/day border... when should that have been?... My max was 16xx some days ago... but I´m still trying to max out offcourse :D

Bye an CU,

Pokerhasi

Well i think i may of found some thing that may make Ubero go faster. Well for someone who could not hit over 300Wu in 24hrs on an 2400xp it was quite a shock to find that now i can hit over 300wu with this little gem.
Well anyway i will cut to the chase. i found this on Unbro forum.

Topic: Making Ubero faster in text mode

By
beerknurd

Currently I am using

java -Xms300m -Xmx300m -XX:NewSize=100m -XX:MaxNewSize=100m -cp Agent.jar ubero.agent.Agent -text

to start Ubero in text mode. I have one of the best computers you can buy right now but will barely hit 1000 completed per day. Which I know is alot faster than most people. Does anyone know of any faster commands to tweak Ubero. There has to because tcwicks is running over 2000 per day and my computer is faster. Even though we are running this for free this sure is addictive. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

End Quote

So your bat file should look like this

@echo off

REM --- The standard way of running Ubero
REM java -cp Agent.jar ubero.agent.Agent

REM --- If you want to run Ubero in text mode
java -Xms300m -Xmx300m -XX:NewSize=100m -XX:MaxNewSize=100m -cp Agent.jar ubero.agent.Agent -text

REM --- If you want to run Ubero with the GUI hidden when it starts
java -cp Agent.jar ubero.agent.Agent -hidden

REM --- On Windows NT, 2000 and XP, if you want to start Ubero as a low priority process
REM start /LOW java -cp Agent.jar ubero.agent.Agent

REM --- If you installed the Java SDK instead of the Java JRE you can get better performance
REM --- by running Java in "server" mode
REM java -server -cp Agent.jar ubero.agent.Agent

REM --- If you use Linux, Unix, or OS X you can set a process priority by using the "nice" or "renice"
REM --- command the change Ubero's priority while it runs

It's strange that your computer can only manage to process 300 Wu a day. I have an AMD 1,1Ghz and it can process 340 Wu's per day. You should be doing something like 1000 Wu's a day.

1º - Install ibm java sdk 1.4.0 version
2º - Install ubero

I have been running 3 instances for most of today and will be very shocked if I don't hit at least 1850 today. Oh and Pokerhasi I think I got you and tcwicks mixed up. His agent Bunito used to hit over 2000 per day. But I think he must have used 2 computers with the same agent name. But anyways I think running 3 instances is about as much as my computer can stand and still function worth a crap. But we will see. Tomorrow I may run 3 instances all day and see if I can break the 1900 mark. I used to be sooo jealous of everyone else when I had my little 800 mghz celeron computer that in text mode would only hit 150 per day. (And that was on a good day). Now I have on of the fastest agents. By the way my processor is a 3.4 ghtz with hyper threading technology. I have 1024 mb of ram plus running IBM Java "Much Faster than Sun". So without overclocking my computer, I think this is as fast as I can get. There is no way I would even try to overclock this thing. With my luck I would fry it and my wife would kill me. So I think i'm done. Unless anyone else has any more hints.

Hey Beerknurd, our new leader :notworthy: ,

running Ubero under winXP, you may experience some problems with hanging mouse or slow performance if you want to use your machine for sth else during research...

Be sure to use the command "start /LOW C:\Prog....." in front of your commandline for starting ubero.
This does not affect the performance of Übero but really makes your machine more useable during research

Adding to the debate about maxing out your WUs.

My 2.4 AMD has 4 XP accounts to log into, pick any 2 and run 1 session of Ubero in each.

I've found that it is faster than running 2 sessions on 1 account.

Keep the tips coming, I'll be trying anything new to see if it is faster.

oops..... He still needs to run 3 instances of Ubero. It's much faster..... At least for me.... I guess Pokerhasi did quit........ I guess I'll be battling Chaz from now on. My computer is pissing me off. For the past 3 days my internet connection will just go down.... I woke up this morning with only 3 WU's completed. It would usually be almost 400. So i'm a little behind today... Hopefully it will get better.

No I have DSL. I don't know whats wrong with it. I may start running 17 or Bust. I started earlier today. I haven't decided. Should I continue to run Ubero or should I run SOB????

You may run whatever you wish, after all it is your machine.
We need help with Lifemapper, but your machine will scream if you run 2 instances of SOB using HT.
(I always did like Ubero though)

I like Ubero too. I think i'll run that. I like being the fastest at something. Back when Ubero was big, about how many WU's were people running. I can't imagine with totals of over a million, people like ahillman were only hitting 1700 per day. I'm sure they were running 7 or 8 machines at a time and hitting 5000+ or even 10,000 each day. But I may be wrong.... Just curious.

I also like ubero. The stats are live update.
We can make a rally to see how much we can do.

Alan Hillman and mikkyo were running over 80 computers each when they were fully working on Ubero.
