View Full Version : Hard drive cooling?

My hard drives seem very warm to me. Do any of you know of any inexpensive ways to lower my hard drive temps. I have 2 80gb IDE HDDs.

Hey Jeff, I can't remember where you live but at the computer store I go to which is Microcenter, they have hard drive coolers that fit into a bay slot above or below the hard drive and they have dual fans that blow air onto the HD.

Does anyone else have problems with their hard drive temps? When I touch mine they almost burn.

No mine are pretty warm but that hot. Yours are 7200 RPM right? If so they shouldn't be that hot. Do you have them right next to each other or do you have an empty slot between them? A good case helps too. I have a Thermaltake case and it has a fan directly in front of them pulling air into the case. As long as you don't have the two of them right on top of each other though they should be fine.

they are stacked one right on top of the other. I don't have any more slots. I am going to add themt o the water cooling system I have, I'll post my results.

Mine are probly hotter than anyone else here. even the hdd cage is warm. I think I am going to redo my cooling and enlarge rear exaust to 120mm and I'm not sure but can go up to 172 mm for intake and 92 mm for harddrive cooling

If you are running IBM drives then you sure better keep them cool! They have a big problem with running all the time... IBM had said not to run theirs more than 8 hours at a time... what a ripoff!

One of the main Macs at work that we keep our customers files on has a 30 Gig. IBM Deskstar in it and it has been running 24 hours a day for about 4 years now. About a year ago it started making strange noises occasionally and I went on the net and was looking around and saw where they said that the failure rate for them, when they were run continuously, was something like 80%! We back up all the data but amazingly the thing though noisy sometimes is still chugging away. LOL I notice that Hitachi is making Deskstar drives now.
