So,are you telling me that any socket 754 will do for my upgrade?I'am wanting something like a Athlon 64 at like 2.4GHz
I'am not sure which model

Then you may have to get a motherboard that will take a socket 939 or X2.

Thats what I'am asking.I want to keep this board.I've been told by others that I can go up to the Athlon 64 3700+ socket 754

Just trying to makesure these people know what they're talking about.I'am on disibility and don't have money to mess up.

yes you can do an athlon 64 as long as it's a 754. A few places may have some left.

Ohio,
Welcome to AMD Users. This is what Newegg has left in 754. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?N=2010340343+50001028+1051707438&Submit=ENE&SubCategory=343
If you can go up to a 939 board you'll have a lot more choices up to and including dual cores. I have a 3700+ and 2 3500+'s I prefer the 3500+. Juat make sure that if you do go to the 939 board that it has a slot that will fit your video card some of them only support the new PCI Express.

Woaaahhhh there!!!

The motherboard is fine with all the sock.754 chips mentioned but it's the BIOS you need to worry about. Going by your username I'm assuming that the computer is an OEM system by emachines, is that right?

If it is an emachine system then they will have tinkered with the BIOS and I believe you will only be able to upgrade to a Sempron 3400+ and not an Athlon. If you find that some of the settings are inaccessible within the BIOS setup (greyed out) then you're in trouble and would need to flash a FIC BIOS over the emachines one to allow for Athlon chips to be used. I've had a look at the FIC site and am unable to find a BIOS update for your board so be very careful and check the BIOS before making any purchase.

Let me know how you get on.

Good catch BH!! I don't use proprietary systems (Dell, eMachine, etc.) and I sorta forget about that stuff and having problems with BIOS upgrades for them for running anything other than what they want the systems to run.

I had an HP once , if you had a good long rope it made a great boat anchor.

I lost my anchor 2 months ago, forgot all about it and powered off at full pelt only to find a very short and chewed rope dangling over the bow after a few miles. ...I may have dragged the UK closer to France that day!

I would recommend going 939 as option because you get a couple of other little speed boosts too
the hyper tranport is increased and supports dual channel memory setup
the RAM you got will be better utilized with 939
you can get a low end board for $50 to $60
the extra for the board will be worth it

Good luck and let us know how it goes
