Hi I thought I'd pop over from the World Community Grid because if anyone knows the answer to my question you guys should be the ones.

I'm looking to produce an energy efficient cruncher and I've been a staunch supporter of the Athlon since I first teamed it up with a nF2 Mobo back in 2002.

When the AM2 socket arrived I figured now would be a good idea to go 64 Bit and Dual Core (I'm still Socket A everywhere around the house - 6 at the last count) and then there was the promise of this ADD3800IAT5CU the 3800+ dual core running just 35W flat out now that is the chip for me, but does anyone know where I can source one from ?????

Even Froogle has it delisted

Any idea's

Dave

p.s. I'm now with the Christians Team and we are catching you ;)

I'm no expert, but I thought the low wattage chip was simply a derated (voltage reduced) chip. Anyhow, here is some data from the AMD site:

http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/desktop/details.aspx?opn=ADD3800IAT5CU

Seems to run at the same frequency though. I know you don't get something for nothing, so there has to be a down side in there somewhere.

As far as where to buy, AMD offers this list:

Good luck!

David. Try also searching for the boxed code (ADD3800CUBOX) rather than the tray code but watch out, they are as rare as hen’s teeth to buy unless you are called Dell. I have also heard that some retailers are taking orders when they haven’t got them in stock so check the feedback first. That may be why Froogle has delisted them. I’d like to go down the same route as you when the price drops a bit so if you manage to build it then call back and tell us all about it. dAVE.

Thanks for the feedback

I'm beginning to think serious vapourware. But if I ever do spot one I'll let you know.

Hoping to team it up one day maybe with http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=3&l2=101&l3=0&model=1163&modelmenu=1

A nice fanless Nvidia Graphics card and a nice and efficient Arctic Cooling Powered by Seasonic Case http://www.artic-cooling.com/pc_case1.php

I'll let you know

If you do spot one that would be available for delivered in or to the UK could you post back

Much appeciated

Hi David,

Welcome to AMDUsers! :D

The ADD3800cubox should be more available in the UK during October.

It will be more expensive than the 3800+ but do not see this as a great processor for over clocking as it is basically a 4600 under clocked. Hence the price hike at a similar level to a 4600.

Hello David Autumms

I too am loooking right now for a good valuable efficient processor. I would want something that has that extra oomph for when my turf on a certain project is getting too close for comfort. But, I want energy efficiency too. I do not need to spend ooddles of $ on Electricity each month. I did my time of hoping to source a good CPU which had the characteristcs to allow me champion power with minimum amount of energy out but, to no avail.
I believe the direction to go really is the AM2 pin !

Good luck in your endeavor if you care to read my query then check out this link: http://www.amdusers.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=3083#36237

If you find that awesome direction please keep us up to date with your findings I would love to know which direction to go, Thank You in Advance!!!

That's better news with the price of electricity now in the UK this has to be the way forward. Environmentally friendly DC Crunching.

I'll keep an eye out I'm not really looking at the OC potential just reliable number crunching although when I finally set eyes on this mythical chip I'll let you know what it will do.

Thanks for cheering me up :D
