Well we have a place to call home, our Team is moving up the ladder pretty fast right now as we head into 3rd place. I am only using one of my Computers on this project but after Saturday Afternoon I should have two systems crunching. :blob3:

You guys go fo it!! I just brought 3 more dullies online that I built this week and I'll hold our place in Xlab. God I love Xmas presents from the wife. But, I am getting a little tired of running elec circuits to the bedroom. Next spring I'm going to build a shed in the yard and move my zoo out there.

I should have 2 more Core 2 Duo's up and running by the end of next week or early the week after. I've had the CPU's, Memory & Video Cards sitting for a month now waiting for the Motherboards to come in. I finally decided to go with a different Motherboard that had the Features I wanted and actually cost $115 less each ...

I had no idea when I would get the other Motherboards so I decided to go this route instead ...

The problem is that I had decided I didn't want any more 4800+'s because they run so hot. The wife saw the old list and ordered me 3 of them for christmas. Once the boxes started showing up she just went ahead and told me. No way was I going to pout and tick her off so I'll just have to wait till spring to get what I've been really wanting. I want to try one of those Tyon boards and build a server. The dang boxes are getting out of hand and I think it's time to try putting all of this into racks. Even if I have to find a way to make a cold room. A shed will work but even then I'll have to have two rooms. One to work in and the other for the machines that I can lower the temp in. I just ordered another KVM switch to gang onto the one I got last month. I really like the D-Link so I stayed with that brand, but the cables are out of sight.

Yea Steve I used to name them after the family members that I built them for but I ran out of kids so now I have Zebra, Roo, Cheata, Tiger...........

Congrats to the team! We have reached second place in Proteins@Home (Proteins@Home). However, FreeDC will be taking that place away from us tomorrow.

Yesterday I cranked up my second system to 100% on this project and the stats should show it tomorrow, but I can't make up for what FreeDC can put out. PoorBoy is putting out a massive amount of work - #1 in the world, but it will take more team effort to retain our standing here.

I have a third system that I can eventually bring online for this project, once I get it running. It is being, problematic.

I've just put 3 systems (6 cores) on Proteins. We, the team, are about to lose 4th place to one guy named "Woody Woodpecker" (Team Wristshakers) - how embarrasing. He is the #1 in the world producer for Proteins with a RAC of 6200, so I suppose that is some consolation. Apparently he works for the Finnish government and is a cartoons and blues lover and possibly plays in a band (hence the "Wristshaker" monikker). I was thinking of inviting him to our team, but he seems to be settled with his team name. Here are his web sites: http://www.myspace.com/velipekka and http://www.wristshakers.com/

It will take a day or so for one of the systems to kick in as there are about 16 - 20 hours worth of PI-Segment work left on it.

Thanks Skuzz. Unless the Team wants to stick to Proteins for the long term we won't keep ahead of the Wristshakers team. This guy simply has too much capacity, so we will be losing 4th place.

I see two options:

1) If we just stick a few units on Proteins for the long term we can eventually catch Boinc Synergy and get our placement back by passing them up.

2) We, the team, could really hit Proteins hard for a few weeks and pass them up quickly then leave a few units on to maintain our placement. I don't see this happening very soon due to needing to recover from the PI Segment effort in so many projects.

I have two units (4 cores) that I plan to leave on Proteins for the long term in any instance.

I lost about 8 hours of production today. My system shut down and started to re-boot. I think my power supply is dying. I have a spare but don't want to take this system down until I build the new unit. If my system keeps crashing I'll have to anyway.

I also need to figure out how to get rid of the darn password request at boot. I did an MS update and suddenly my system started asking for a password. Consequently it won't complete the boot process and the autostart applications won't re-start.

Looks like Dr. Dan T. Morris of SETI.USA didn't care for my passing him up in Proteins. He's ramped up his production from 200-300/day to several thousand a day. SETI.USA is now a threat to us. How much of a threat depends on how much he/they ramp/s up. I'll be watching.

Steve Lux
04-27-2007, 10:24 PM
About 1500 more team points to go and we will re-pass team SETI.USA to regain 5th place. Unless there is a change in pace we should have them before the weekend is up. (hoping that Dr. Morris isn't paying attention)

Also, just another 9,000 points after team SETI.USA is team Boinc.Synergy, who we can pass up for 4th place.

Thanks for the help.

We have taken 5th place back from SETI.USA and it doesn't look like Dr. Dan has reacted yet, so we may be safe for a bit. We are less than 5k from passing up BOINC Synergy and they have yet to turn up their production also. So, 4th place may be ours within the week.

Steve Lux
05-01-2007, 01:41 PM
Apparently Dr. Morris was paying attention. He's turned his farm back onto Proteins so SETI.USA has passed us again. We are back down to 6th place. However, I intend remain a thorn in his side in Proteins, so he had better keep at it.

BOINC Synergy still doesn't seem to be paying attention and we are rapidly catching up to them.

Steve Lux
05-03-2007, 02:57 AM
We've passed up BOINC Synergy to recover 5th place. They certainly have a lot of members, but only two have turned up production in the last few days - it's not enough to match us so far.

I have my system set to connect to Server set at .1 days and the extended to capture up to 4 days. Of this the total of work units currently in my task load is 10. but as soon as two are complete they are reported and 2 more download to fill there place. I had that message about a week ago on one of my computers, but it said 400 results. The other computers kepts running just fine. I don't understand what they are doing with that.
The quota value goes down if a participant returns workunits with errors or aborted.

Are you hogging all the work units mitchell? Is this another sabotage? I'm all for keeping the race going though if they get it fixed soon.

Sorry I have been away for a few weeks. Very long hours at work, but the increase in pay will be appreciated when I take my vacation out to Nevada in the 3rd week of July.

We're making really good headway here for the team. I'm afraid BOINC died on my systems for some reason several days ago. I have reset the project on my system and have e-mailed my son to reset it on the two systems he has running. Yesterday I kept losing power due to severe storms and lightning - finally I just turned it off for several hours last night when it got especially intense.

When I Reset BOINC for Proteins it may have sent me more work units than my system can crunch. I have literally hundreds and hundreds of WU's due by 1 July. BOINC was calculating that I would crunch the WUs in 15 - 17 minutes when in fact my system usually takes around 30 minutes each WU per core. I wish I could OC this system but there are no options for OCing in the BIOS. Ah well, we do what we can.

I don't see any significant increase in effort by the other teams yet in response to our increased output. It's good to see so many joining in the effort to recover our placement.

After much hard work, Proteins@Home is ready for a vacation! We hope to finish all the workunits that are currently on our server or being crunched by volunteers over the next couple of weeks. After that, the project will go offline for a few months. We will be posting a progress report on this web site within a week or two. All participants will be notified by email. Meanwhile, many thanks to all of you for your help and participation!

Any as have been affected of such messages? I’ve had it twice this week. That means I lost a lot of crunching hours because I have been out and away to another place. Seems only affected Intel C2D and not AMD´s.

This problem has been reported and talked about alot on the proteins forum. The only solution so far is to just abort the offending tasks. I had this hit a couple of my machines one time and they restarted the same wu's all night long (tying up 8 cores of processing power). Maybe they will fix this after their "vacation" it looks to me like they have about a days worth of wu's left on their servers before they go on vacation.

I got home today and found 3 of my rigs had that error, and I run all AMDs.
worst yet, 2 of them had been idle for over a day and the 3rd was down for almost 3.

Reset the project. The problem is pretty insidious to the point of killing explorer.exe on my system. If you reset you get a new set of WUs and so far the problem has not reoccurred.

Glad you said that, I found my systems explorerless (and BOINC had closed :icon_rolleyes:) a few times, I was testing out beta BOINCs during the racing and I just thought it was due to that!

Reset the project. The problem is pretty insidious to the point of killing explorer.exe on my system. If you reset you get a new set of WUs and so far the problem has not reoccurred.

What Version of the BOINC Clint are you running, if it's the v5.10.0 or up then theres a known bug in the Client that Kills the Explorer & your Desktop goes Blank or should I say theres nothing on the Desktop anymore.

I first reported that bug to the Alpha Test Group but they pretty much ignored me at first. A few days later I reported it again and other people started to chime in too with the same problem. David Anderson himself took a interest in this bug too and instructed Rom Walton to devote his energy to fixing it.

Since then they have released v5.10.11 & v5.10.12 with supposedly fixes to this problem. But with the v5.10.11 I still had it happen a couple of times, but the 2 incidents it happened could have been related to something else, I don't know. The v5.10.12 released is no good either mainly because most people can't get it to install, myself included.

If you experience this problem of the Desktop losing everything then it's probably because the Explorer.exe has been stopped, you can get the Explorer back by bringing up the Task manager with the 3 finger Salute (ctrl\alt\del) then in the Applications Tab choose New Task and just type in explorer & then hit Enter and you Desktop should come back without a re-boot.

Your probably going to lose everything in the Task Bar Tray too, I just manually start up everything thats supposed to go there & then fire up BOINC again and wait for it to happen again. With the v5.10.11 I've only had it happen twice so far, with the v5.10.7 & 8 I had it happen a couple of dozen times, so it less frequent now anyway ...

All right, now where in the heck has Poorboy gone off to? Here I have been dilligently sneaking up on him in this project for a year or so, and now he's not even there in the stats. What's up with this?

Most of my fun is camping on a project and seeing if someone is interested in keeping their placement.

It was his decision to do so. He is not mad at anyone. He just decided to move on.

Sigh ... Any Points I earned @ any Project while on the AMD Team will stay with the AMD Team @ every Project even though I may no longer be on the Team. Thats the way it should be & thats the way it is in the BOINC Projects unlike a lot of DC Projects where the Credit is lost by the Team if a person leaves, I still get the Personal Credit too no matter where or who I Crunch for.

As Beer said I am not mad @ anyone, I basically just like to crunch on my own & was surprised I stayed on the Team as long as I did. I've had the Itch to move on by myself for a long time and finally pulled the Trigger a few days ago ... :icon_neutral:

Well, I have to admit I've had that itch every once in a while myself. I tend to get dissapointed that the projects which are important to me aren't as important to others. But, I was married once, I understand dissapointment. Poorboy will be missed, in several ways.

I was wondering what happened to you on BOINCStats and the projects' main sites. Your name was disappearing from our team on all of them. I thought it was a CPID issue like a few people are dealing with. I'm glad it wasn't related to any disagreements with the team like what happened with Dr. Morris recently. It was certainly a pleasure having your workunit crunching domination on our side!

Looks like Proteins@Home has run out of work and is shutting down for now. On their website they state that they are moving into another location, but for now they don't have anyone to run the project. They are looking for 20 post-doc positions to fill.

As Predictor@Home is also not issuing work (and it doesn't seem I'll get the opportunity to catch Mitchell) I'm moving over to Einstein@Home to help my son get another team ranking before moving back to chase KeithW's heels in D2OL. Someone has to keep that young man working...
