My mouth is officially watering... (http://biology.polytechnique.fr/proteinsathome/show_host_detail.php?hostid=2941)

Who is going to be the first one on our team to get a quad-core??

LOL won't be me!

AMD is suppost to be putting out the X2 6000+ during the first quarter of this year... Rumors are it will be clocked at 3.2Ghz. The 5400+ and 5600+ are already out... Where is AMD's desktop quad-core?? :(

well there is this rumor, and if true then I guess I'll bite the bullet and get one.

Hopefully one of these days I will have the money to keep up with technology...

Right now you can buy roughly 8 dual cores for the price of a quad core... If I had the money, I would take 16 cores over 4...

But if that article is correct then I may just wait till the quads come down in price...

Information taken from eBay prices...

AMD X2 3800+ $115.00USD (http://cgi.ebay.com/AMD-Athlon-64-3800-X2-Dual-Core-2000MHz-FSB-AM2-CPU_W0QQitemZ160072065917QQihZ006QQcategoryZ80139Q QrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

Intel QX6700 Extreme $899.00USD (http://cgi.ebay.com/Intel-Core-2-Extreme-Quad-Core-QX6700-Processor-8MB-CPU_W0QQitemZ270076215317QQihZ017QQcategoryZ3674QQ ssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

well actually it does not work out that way Beerk.

I can put a low end dual core system together for about 750-800
mb 150.0 built in video and sound, and network
cpu 170.0
mem 200.0
hd 150.0
powsup/case 80.0

I can put a low end quad core system together today for about 1580.00
mb 150. built in video and sound, and network
cpu 1000.0
mem 200.0
hd 150.0
powsup/case 80.0

Today, to put together 10 dual core systems(20 cores) would cost about 7500.00

Today, to put together 5 quad core systems(20 cores) would cost about 7900.00, only four hundred more.

If the price for that quad core cpu drops to 581.00 as rumored, then that 5 system quad core farm (20 cores) now costs: 5805.00

mb 150 built in video and sound, and network
cpu 581
mem 200
hd 150
powsup/case 80
total cost =1161

Even if the price doesn’t drop, I’d always prefer to run half as many systems for a slightly higher initial cost that equates to about the same cpu core count. To me that means less admin, less power, less heat, less space, and less money in the long run. When you start running more systems, power and heat are the big issues.

I was strictly talking cpu... Not to mention the electricity costs would eat up any extra $.

But like I said, I was strictly talking cpu prices...

AMD X2 3800+ = $115 per unit x 8 = $920.00 USD (8 processors = 16 cores)
Intel QX6700 Extreme = $900 per unit x 1 = $900.00 USD (1 processor = 4 cores)

And again, the above prices are from eBay, not the local computer store.

not to mention that every cpu needs a motherboard, ram, psu, hdd, probably a case, and some space to put it.

Well I know that.... But I was just saying "That off eBay", you could buy 8 AMD X2 processors for $920.00, and 1 Intel Quad-Core for $900.00. That's all I was saying.

16 AMD cores for the same cost as 4 Intel cores

Yes, I know you still need all the other stuff too.

I'm fed up, i thought AMD are supposed to be trashing the competition? Not the competition making AMD look like they are behind. I'm still (kinda) hopeful that AMD will pick up and release something that will hurt the competition but if they leave it too long then alot their customers will start looking to Intel.

It doesn't help when i read this today: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/2007/01/09/ces2007_intel_eight_core/

AMD get off your butt and do something!

I saw a video at AMD's website, provided by a link from here or the AMD Zone, that talked about AMD's Quad core. It said that AMD's Quad core will be faster, because intel's quad is just 2 C2Ds stuck on the same die. AMD's will be a completely new processor with each core connected via their direct connect technology. They also said two other things, which I can't remember because I saw the video long ago, that made it faster. AMD will continue to lead until intel releases its octi core around 2008 which won't just be 4 C2Ds stuck on the same die. If i find the video i will post it.

If you look at the intel quads there is a L1 cache and 2 L2's this should prove to be the bottleneck that AMD is trying to work around

You know these things go back and forth. Just be patient - AMD will have an answer.
