So is anyone here running one of these dual opti 275 setups? I might just need one of these.

Wow, I really like that numbering system :D that would make it so easy to remember clock speeds! hmmmmm 95W X4? :D

I can't understand what took so long to fix the numbering. Didn't they start out making sense, and then got crazey?
I have to put a dual opti box on my birthday list.
Gotta start researching mb's. Any suggestions?

No but they look good in that CPU comparison.
Been trying to find a decent motherboard and memory to suit. Any ideas?

It looks like for keeping the MB price under 300, I see several feature rich mb options that look good from tyan. I like the second one.
Tyan Tiger K8WE (S2877ANRF) Dual Opteron/ nForce Pro 2200/ A&GbE Server Motherboard EWIZ 262.00
TYAN S3870G2NR-RS Dual Socket 940 ServerWorks HT1000 ATX Server Motherboard new egg 260.00

I just lost a bid today for a pair of opteron 280's on ebay. I'm bummed. It went about 80 bucks past my bid. What a deal for someone.

Be careful as the 280 and 275 are quite different the first has only 1mg on the L2 as the second has 2mg. This would produce quite lower results then you would want to achieve those crunching capacities you were hoping for !
This will also decrease you power consumption too on the 280! Either way you take it it is still not a bad processor, just not the better selection you originally had in mind! :icon_wink:
I am looking at this as the next upgrade: http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/opteron/SideBySide.aspx?opn=OSP8218GAA6CY&opn=OSP2218GAA6CX

I don't know Nflight. Here are the spec sheets for the 280 and 275. They both list 1x2mb for L2.
I still like the price for the 275 (if I buy 2).

Well here's my next fun AMD project that I'm awaiting delivery on. Hopefully up in less than a week.
Asus L1N64-SLI WS Motherboard
A pair of Opty 2216's
4gb of Patriot 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM
A couple of 3.0 gb SATA drives
A 700 Watt PSU
I have a nice ATI 1950 graphics card to install also. (for Folding GPU fun)
I'm gonna start with fans and heat sinks, but will prob put a custom WC setup on it after a little running time, and then overclock. yeah baby. I cant wait to see this eat some PI.
Here's a nice review on the MB.

I got a few quick questions... Are nowadays AM2 boards capable of taking a dual core today and upgrading to a quad core in a couple of years?
AMD made publicity about that but I didn't get the details... is it only for Opterons, or also for desktop X2's? Do all AM2 boards have that capability or only some?
mitchellds
03-22-2007, 12:14 AM
well I havent read about any 4 core am2 based cpu's, nor any dual cpu based am2 boards on the way from AMD. The quad core processor next promised is the barcelona which runs on the 1207 socket F board, not a am2 socket. This gives the possibility that 8 cores could be run on the same board I spoke of above. Here is some good reading.

If I recall correctly (it's been 23 years), the nuke on the sub I served on (USS J. C. Calhoun - SSBN 630) put out 4 gigawatts. Should be enough.

Heck Dragon you might want to check with Navy surplus that might be for sale by now. If not there the old Soviet Union is running a sale on nukes.

this is the last official looking road map i have come across http://images.dailytech.com/nimage/3032_large_AMD_Nov2006_Roadmap.png
i believe the next model that will be competitive or out preform Intel will be code named greyhound (was something hound anyways lol) using FPGA ((fully programmable gate array)you will be able to select what instruction set is on cpu ie if you do a lot of physics load instruction set for that or games, whatever basically you will be able to fine tune cpu to be the most effective for what you normally do ( like sse3 whatever you know) but is socket 1207 (currently called 1207fx by amd) if that helps and was also suggested that ht3 will be at 8 ghz by that time (currently ht3 is @ 2.4 ghz i believe (i havent been able to locate link sorry))) so we may have some waiting to do? mind you amd have released amd 64 x2 6000+ 125w THD (makes me think it is a scaled down fx chip ie fx 74 but is socket 1207 but both at 3 ghz ) but according to amd's benchmarks out performance Intel E6700, 130% (amd 64x2 6000+) vs 124% (e6700) base system is amd 64 x2 3800+ click here for reference (http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_9485_13041%5E13077%5E14820,00.html)
ps i have heard nothing in regards to new upcoming model from amd since august last year maybe Australia is a bit behind the times ??

So our short trip into the AM2 socket really didn't amount to much as far as the consumer goes other than having to pay more and switch to another style of memory...... in other words, just another nail in the coffin of the term "upgradablility" which really stands for "suckerability factor" irt the consuming public.

re: the first url, my take on the reading wasn't that this was an earth shattering performance breakthrough, sorta rather the contrary. As for the second two urls, it all just really breaks down to "talk's cheap" as either side can do it. So far amd hasn't done much to walk the talk and is just trying to get some damage control out in the media until hopefully they can get their next version stuff out. A point though that was made in the first url where the author said that why go all through the expense that you'd have to with amd when you could just buy the C2D instead. Point being that that effort isn't going to be a price competitive challenge to the performance/technology of the C2D stuff presently on the market. Reality is that most people have to go where they get the most bang for the buck.... after all, that is what got AMD gaining market share in the earlier days of the alternative pentiums.
edit: I'm not anti-AMD either. One out of my home farm of 23 boxes is intel, the others are amd. Unfortunately I just don't see anything coming out of the amd camp in the relatively near term that is going to make a drastic impact on intel's position.

oh ya..... I think I've already done that. Computers, added on a room for them, bought a separate a/c system for the room, brought in dedicated power lines. And it just continues. :) But I look back on my younger days in the navy, and all the money I spent on beer, fast cars, and wiminses.... sigh. I sure could have bought a lot of computers with it! The fast cars have all but rotted out. The wiminses, well they aren't anywhere in sight now. All the beer I drank, well we all know where that went. And really, the only thing of value out of it all was the money that I spent on computers. From that I moved on to making a good living after the navy. It's been an interesting trip in the computer world, and I'm still enjoying it. So I look at your $20,000 there Opteron, and I see positive possibilities. It isn't money thrown down the drain like all the beers and cigarrettes. :)

I couldn’t agree more Brucifer... I've done my share of completely wasteful spending but I like to think if you could've bought a computer worth its salt when I was doing it I would have been buying computers...
My wife says I don't understand why you have to have 4 computers... I tell her if I had the money and space I’d have a hell’va lot more... I’m sure to some what we do is wasteful but the way I see it it’s a way for Joe-Six pack like myself to contribute the greater good of all mankind...
I really hope when the next major medical breakthrough comes to pass its directly linked to what we do then the flood gates of main stream crunching will finally open...

My PC upgrading is on permanent hold :(
I wounder what they use for program when they run multitasking when testing.
Say they run Boinc using 4 cores each I´m sure AMD finich the WU faster than Intel. As of the AMD models we use today AMD use to be faster than Intel.
