From the News section on the right of the main screen comes these two posts in one day, this should make a few of our Linux and Mac users very happy!

April 24, 2007
We have updated our applications for Windows and Linux which were build using libraries of BOINC ver. 5.92. Now, we are developing some programs to use zipped files in our server. Applications having zip function will be updated as soon as possible.

April 24, 2007
Now, we are developing a Mac application on Mac OS X 10.4. However, we have encountered the problem that static linking of binaries is not supported on Mac OS X, it is going a little behind schedule.

In case you have not noticed....

SETI.USA is running a 'raid' on Tanpaku.:-( I think this is the second 'raid' in what appears to be a series. They just finished one on Spinhedge.

Everyone hang on and keep crunching. :icon_biggrin:

Thanks,

I'd say 2-ch is hitting it hard. Look at the number of people hitting milestones yesterday and today on the Free-DC stats site.

http://stats.free-dc.org/new/teamstats.php?proj=tan&team=Team+2ch

mitchellds
04-30-2007, 06:05 PM
Why is it that project stats on stats-free-dc site are so much differnet that stats that are reported on Tanpaku's stat site per day? For instanace.

On link: http://stats.free-dc.org/new/projpage.php?proj=tan
Our amd-users team credit today is reported as 6027

and on tanpaku's link http://issofty17.is.noda.tus.ac.jp/team_display.php?teamid=1&sort_by=total_credit&offset=0
we show 14,917.72 daily team avg.

I guess Tanpaku is giving the long term running avg. and the frr free-dc is the real daily?

I notice that the individual avg stats are way off also. I show 6867 on Tanpaku, and 3963 on free-dc.

Who do I believe?

Bender10
04-30-2007, 06:53 PM
I think you are comparing RAC and Daily score in this case....

Team stats--------RAC----------Daily Points
Tanpaku-----------14,921
DC----------------14,922--------6,027

Yours DC-----------6,913---------3,963
Yours Tanpaku------6,860

I'd go with the Tankaku anyway, They only update DC once a day.

I hope I understood your question. If this helped, please donate to the dyslexic Tech Support Fund....

It appears (maybe) that SETI.USA has backed off from Tanpaku...for now.

But, Team 2ch is making a run for it. They posted ~61k for yesterday. That puts them ~500k (less than 10 days) behind us. I started moving my boxes back here yesterday. We'll see what happens.

Steve Lux
05-01-2007, 01:44 PM
Dr. Morris from team SETI.USA has re-focused on Proteins for a bit because we passed them up. So, if you push him in Tanpaku and we push him in Proteins he can't cover all the bases himself. Something has to give.

Steve Lux
05-02-2007, 12:27 AM
Just checked; Dr. Dan Morris (SETI.USA) has 50 computers. At least that is the number he has listed in Proteins according to Free-DC stats. Looks like most of them are mid-powered Intel boxes though. Quantity rather than quality.

Just thought you might want to know.

Bender10
05-02-2007, 02:24 PM
It looks like "Team 2ch" is gaining on us by ~50k a day. This seems to have turned into someone's Science Project... Geez, 350 '2ch' users a day returning work!!!

We'll be "Road Kill" in about 9 days. I don't think we can beat 50k a day. But, We can hang onto 2nd. And get 1st back later...:icon_wink:

Thanks for Hanging in :icon_mrgreen:

I feel it isn´t fun when peoples is allowed have so many PC´s in one project. It feels as they can take dead of the fun because the great advantage they have. A good policy should be every project only allowed max 10 computers not more.
We is more and more as a spectator as stand near their way when they are ruching by and we can only se their tail then they are gone:icon_lol:

SETI.USA is Back so now we have both 2ch and mac2312 to worry about. I have all systems crunching at this time. Care to join in the defense of our #1 anyone?

Calling all cars, be on the lookout for mobilizing squadrons of crunchers, radar says they are heading this way, keep a look out! :icon_mrgreen:

mitchellds
05-04-2007, 02:23 PM
well it looks like it the team 2ch we really have to worry about for the long haul. With 850 members they arent likely to go away, like the one main member doing the majority of crunching on the seti team. So we WILL end up losing our #1 to the 2ch team down the road shortly. The big seti team member might just lose interest if we give him enough resistance.

Guys I hate to say that your wasting your time on Tanpaku because a lot of us have run a lot of it. But, the 2CH is 926 members strong and with 67% of the members returning work daily, we wouldn't even be a speed bump if we had everyone with all our cores going full blast. Unless they lose interest we should just plan to defend 2nd and hope to take back 1st later.

If this were a battle I would raise my hands above me and just give up before they slaughter us. We are crunching against the whole Country of Japan, you know! :( The odds are not in our favor:

AMD Users = 78 members
Team 2ch = 964 members

It just isn't fair....:-(

Coming to terms with defeat is never a pretty thing to admit, We still have one project left that we are still in the leading position. For all those that need to be out in the lead I suggest you scurry over to that one, at least to defend it just a little longer. :icon_neutral: :icon_redface:

Hey Nflight,

I'd promised you before I'd help you out on a boinc project of your choice for helping me out before in my projects. Whats your fancy these days? I've got 75 gflops I can shortly redirect if you like. I thought I'd see Tanpaku through the 3 million team mark. That should happen very shortly.

Nflight
05-07-2007, 02:18 PM
mitchellds: I am full on, the "World Community Grid Boinc project" at the moment. It is another of those ones you need to be patient with the output of the stats as there is about a three day delay. But the project is definitely worth the effort with all the various projects embedded into the outcome. They have several different aptitudes which you can select to participate in, all medical of course, finding the cures or remedies to solve the sometimes complex frustrations dealing with the human factor.
You should start here!
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/index.jsp

Thanks for the help
P.S. You will notice the stats in my signature of Boinc WCG, that's it! I just joined April 26, but this is where I will be for along time to come. Your crunching ability will help push our team past a few hurdles ahead of us.

I just joined. I'll start crunching that once we hit the 3 million mark in tanpaku. Just about another 30k to go....

I think that we are going to be seeing much more of that in the future. Seti showed that DC is a viable way for more computing horspower for projects. As Nflight mentioned the hard sell efforts of Tanpaku in Japan, there is going to be a big lesson for other Universities, etc., in how to harness the largely unused computing power. So some others will pick up on it. Look at Seti.USA, they have been working hard at trying to get people in the US to center around a "national" based team, like DPC, the German teams, and Russia.

So the point I'm getting at is that it is going to be harder and harder for teams to be effective at competing in the majority of projects out there, at least when viewed from a team competition points based view and maintaining a high ranking across the spectrum. Of course any contribution of crunching to any project is effective for that project. Even DPC is picky about what projects they care to get involved with, as is BBR, and some other really good sized teams. Most teams just don't have the horsepower to jump into everything, and are becoming more selective in what they crunch.... just some ramblings... :) LOL

Bender10
05-09-2007, 11:43 AM
Well, We are slowly ticking down to our final hours as #1. Getting bumped is not a good feeling, But..:(

If you are crunchiong Tanpaku for a reason, then this situation should not change your reason. I said this earlier, "I don't mind being 2nd to these people". Team 2ch has done a great job. We still have a worthwhile project to support, and a 2nd place to maintain...

Don't give-up on this project. There is still good work being done on Tanpaku.

Anyway, Tanpaku News.

We have had a few milestones passed in the last couple of days.

CDUpton passed 2,000

Padillaz passed 5,000

Mitchell passed 500,000

There is a saying that goes, "It's better to be a has-been, than to never have been at all." (This is meant as a bit of humor.)

All the members that put into the Tanpaku effort have done a really great job. Look at what it has taken to unseat you.... a truly massive undertaking. They have done an excellent job of advertising and getting citizens of their country involved in the form of a national undertaking as mentioned by Nflight in another thread. For those that are crunching Tanpaku because of the science aspect of it, then they are still winners as it is an excellent project. For those that are/were crunching for the #1 spot, you are winners too as you did achieve #1, which was a goal. Congrats to all of you. :)

Is anyone else having problems talking to the Tanpaku server? The site also seems to be down...

Nflight
05-11-2007, 07:32 PM
Bender10 the reason may be that there is too much demand on the server from 2ch and there overpowering efforts.

Vaughan it is nice to know that there are powerful crunchers dedicated the entire life of some projects willing to make a difference.

Mitchellds nice of you to help out with ufluids, I know if you look hard enough Poorboy has about 104,000 points as the top cruncher, maybe you could shake him loose from his other projects to push him a little too. Don't mind me and my stats, there is always another project I can conquer in the future. The ufluids project needs the support now so we may maintain or push upward in our numbers at this time!

Thank You for an awesome Comment Brucifier, that felt good to hear that, we have all worked hard to achieve and then maintain that position. It took a whole country to over take us. I do feel like I can tilt my head back and glimmer I held off a country, at least for awhile in one project. Thank You Again Brucifier, your words are right on.

Bender10
05-11-2007, 11:46 PM
Yeah, I thought that was it. About half of my boxes were idle and not picking up any work. The rest have some cached, and that's running down. They are all showing "comm deferred for...20 hours plus!".

I just added some other projects (wcg, ufluids, primegrid, neuron.. to hold me over). Crap!!

I was going to run some "climate prediction" wu's, but I had to fill out an application form listing "who will inherit this computer..." due to the time required to crunch the WU's !!!! :icon_rolleyes:

WOW, do they expect this project to be complete by 2057 or something!?!? Oh yeah, we're dealing with weather. So it will work out just right that we find out 50 years from now, that "there is a 50% chance that it rained on 5/11/07, someplace in Sweden" !!! (maybe) :icon_mrgreen: :icon_lol:

Good project I guess, large wu's.....

Well, the Tanpaku server is back up to speed again. And SETI.usa (mac2312) is cranking out 70k a day, along with Team 2ch doing 71k....WOW, what a battle coming up!!

Bender10
05-17-2007, 02:57 PM
Well, The server has been up and down, then up again (for a few days I hope). Anyway....

We are holding 2nd place. But now there a 4 Teams making a BIG push against Team 2ch, and this will hit us pretty hard.

4 - Team SciFi 20K/day
5 - SETI.USA 69K
6 - Ars Technica 11k
14 - Team Norway 14k

We really need another 2-4k a day to hold on during this minor position adjustment. If we can get 1 core from a handful of people for a few weeks.... I'd like to see our output up around 10-13k. This will keep us ahead of "Protein structural analysis room Japan". We can't stop SETI.USA (mac2312), but....

Thanks,
Bender
