I have been on here for a while now and know very little about everyone. I say everyone that wants to, post a picture, or some other info about yourself. Just so that everyone will know a little bit more about everyone else.

For all of you who don't know me, (hard to believe anyone doesn't yet... ROFLMAO)

I'm Chuck.
I'm a computer engineer / Architect.
I'm 45, ...... and 1/2 years old.... :(
I am currently working on a special assignment near Pasadena, California, USA... Home is both southern Pennsylvania, and D/FW Texas.

I'm the geek behind the curtain in the wizard of Oz for some things
you commonly use every day.

I've travelled the world many times over, except for getting to Oz (don't worry Vaughan, we're working on it)... I've lived in 8 countries and 14 US states now.

My passions are music, flying (I'm a pilot), and doing things that help others....

I've been dating this really great person and it might just be the magic I've missed in my first marriage (of 20years)... Time will tell.

I have two children. My daughter is 23, lives in Norfolk, Va; has her own company; and is a major in Astrophysics. I would say more about my daughter, but her PhD thesis work is in competition with folks from JPL and The Planetary Society. I can tell you she won the Science Fair at 18 and had beat out a JPL employee who had written his masters thesis on the same topic. She beat his equations by an order of magnitude.

My son is 21, lives in Columbia, MD and is currently co-op as an 'apprentice' teaching computers to the mechanics while the mechanics teach him the tricks of fixing cars. The benefit is that hopefully he will be able to design better cars in the future that are both longer lasting and easier to service.

I will be leaving Cali in a few weeks, perhaps even days..... to return to Pa for a while... then back to re-establish and reopen the house in Texas (it's been locked up a while but taken care of for me).

There is nothing you can't ask... so please don't ever hesitate..... Nothing upsets me except a dumb question (one you already know the answer for)..

My passion flows into life and as you all know...clearly into what I do and this board....

There is a great life to be lived yet... I'm only 45... My grandfather was taken from us at the early age of 93.... I have a LOT of life ahead of me still. (so better get used to it... ...grinning..)

Did I miss anything???

Oh yeah..... Beerk and I are neighbors in Tx... LOL (is that good or bad? ROFLMAO)....

Hmmmm...... Is that a good flair or a bad flair????? ROFL... I am used to dealing with PM's and 4-star officers who want it explained in detail....

The flp side is that I can't always turn it off.... But, in general, I am a communicator as much as a I am a down-in-the-dirt engineer (like fixing mfold tonight... I found a few of the problems with the calculations)....

So... which is it??? Good communicator or as gabby as a housewife?? What's the general opinion??? No hard feelings, but now I AM curious what folks think. :)

Please do, speak up... constructive criticism is how one improves. I'm a big boy and can take it... to let 'er rip.

Chuck

*edit*
Personal note: If there were a way to align my German education with my US education, I'ld have my Ph.D. (Piled Higher and Deeper)... but I am not going to freshman classes at this age... online or bust or another avenue.... LOL

Wow ! How fast a thread can evolve , eh ?

Hi. I B Dave. 34. Born Scotland. Now an Aussie. Live Brisbane.

I travelled a lot growing up. Dad was a scientist and became an Education (& sometimes commercial) IT manager not long after I was born so I've been around computers pretty much all my life. At the age of 3 was playing with punch tape on an Elliot 501 in Africa, for the history buffs. they also made great streamers flying out the back of a LandRover :)

For now I have stopped the travel, met my wife/CEO, bought a mortgage, muddling through raising our son (the manual was missing), and work for a Telco doing MIS & BI work and Process Performance monitoring and analysis.

I have been to a lot of places and have to say that Brisbane is simply the best. Heck - it took me 3 days to drive to Brisbane (warm+sunny) from Melbourne (cold+wet), do you think I was about to drive back? ROFL

Nice to meet you all.

You took 3 days to make 1,700 km. Strange but in Europe you make that in one day.

Nice to meet you Dave.

em99010pepe,

1 - take all of your family belongings, stick them into a crysler, make sure the doors shut and the shock absorbers are all the way down.
2 - Now, IF you can get into the drivers seat with the jerry can of petrol next to you and get the car to move in a forward direction, tell me how long would you want to stay behind the wheel :P

luckily Australia is a very beautiful place and if you don't take your time you will pass by the nice things and not even notice them.

Yes. I took my sweet time - I didn't intend doing it again for a loooooooong time. Actually, it took until last year when we went on a 2 week road trip and had a really good look around.

LOL. Nice to meet you too, dude!

In Summer I always go with my family to south of Spain. It's 1300km away from my home and we do it in 12-13 hours. I usually drive at 160km/h or more.

Driving with jerry can of petrol next to me is something I don't want to know even to try.

That's Scottish to you pommie ! (Scots are not POMS, but POMS are sasanachs ! Thar be feudin' thar.) No offence intended - none taken.

One of those things. Went to different schools and don't have the thick scottish accent. Having spent my life in other places, didn't fit back in too well. No ties. Fell in love with Australia the first time I came out here. Parents kept going. I put my feet down. That was many years ago. 'Round here I'm an aussie with an odd accent. Besides I have a piece of paper that says so. LOL

Got to sign off now. Got a child to tuck in and a project deadline. I like this banter, but I notice that my internet bill has doubled the last 2 months and the CEO will have me doing nothing but chores if I turn that into a trend ;-)

G'night.

There are a lot of germans and english guys that simply move to south of spain. They have health problems and they can minimize it by going to live in a warm country. They don't suffer anymore with cold.

Hey guys... regarding firewalls and software vs hardware.

Netgear (not to mention one over the other) has an STI firewall / router...

It was so good... I could take out ALL Firewall software and just leave the pop-up stopper and my antivirus.

It made a big improvement in my machine's overall performance.

It also works great for VPN, and handling the local LAN... so it's a switch, router, firewall all in one.... Some vendors even have wireless at 54mb
(802.11g)....

thats what i got going here BC.......i dumped Sygate firewall and just use the netgear router...when i was using them in combo the sygate never flashed at all. plus the fact i never had a project not connect cause i forgot to set sygate to let it thru

exactly... For reference... I have the Netgear FVS318.... that will give you all a comparison.... and a place to start...

It makes a HUGE difference on computer power. Norton Firewall was good, as was McAfee... but tooooooo CPU expensive....

plus, now my internal lan is wide open and I like it.
AND..
I can have 8 simultaneous VPNs running at ZERO cpu cost.

My firewall is in an Origo AWR 8210 ADSL wireless router. I also run Sygate on each machine (extra security, because it stops out-going communication as well, the 8210 can't do that)

I only use Norton 2003, no firewalls. If someone wants to hack my computer I don't even care.

This computer is dedicated to internet and DC project. Here there's nothing important.

Ahh... I can... netgear allows you to define services to block in either or both directions..... just put the IP's or ports and presto.

You clearly did the right thing! I would have done the same.

Come on... Everyone downloads a song here and there......

I'm an honest guy. I always buy, when I can, original software.
