I'd be more interested if it was a native ps3 boinc client, instead of having to run linux on the ps3. Thats what I'm waiting for. All reviews of running linux on the ps3 dont really point to greatly optimized capabilities, not enough to make me want to boot out of the native ps3 OS. In fact, if I could run Firefox and Thunderbird, and a boinc client along side of whats already there, I'd be pretty happy.

I've got YDL linux installing on mine right now. It has a 30 minute ETA. The whole problem i had with trying to crunch any DC project on my PS3 was that i had to compile the program myself. I am not a good enough linux guru to do that. I was glad to see that ps3grid already has one compiled, so it should be pretty easy to install. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hey, I knew i could do it. If i knew how to do a print screen in linux, i'd show how pretty BOINC looks on a PS3, but for now i can post you the benchmarks.

2007-06-10 01:27:30 [---] Processor: 2 PS3PF Cell Broadband Engine

The only thing i forgot to do today was ask the project admin for an invitation code. I e-mailed him, hopefully i'll get one by Sunday or Monday.

I tried attatching to seti@home, but here's what i got.

2007-06-10 01:29:50 [SETI@home] Master file download succeeded
2007-06-10 01:29:55 [SETI@home] Sending scheduler request: Project initialization
2007-06-10 01:29:55 [SETI@home] Requesting 1 seconds of new work
2007-06-10 01:30:00 [SETI@home] Scheduler RPC succeeded [server version 509]
2007-06-10 01:30:00 [SETI@home] Message from server: platform 'powerpc64-ps3-linux-gnu' not found

I looked at all the projects and none them have a Linux/PPC app. :(

Never even played a PS3 yet, but at first sight the benchmarks seem a little low... is it because it is only benchmarking 1 core? (Cell processor has 9 cores, right?)

Yea, a real CELL processor has 9 cores, but in the PS3 it only has 8. To make the PS3 faster Sony left out 1 SPE. I'm not sure why the Benchmarks are so low.

I got my invitation code this morning and successfully attached to PS3Grid. Now i'm just waiting for some WUs. I created the team too, we're number 12. http://www.ps3grid.net/team_display.php?teamid=12

I completed my first WU today and got the 1,875 points for it. :) It took about 1 day to finish. The PS3 is going to is going to double my BOINC output. :)

Geez... 1 whole day on a PS3? That must have been several petacycles just for one workunit! :icon_eek:

To find the site to learn how to hook up your PlayStation look here:
http://www.ps3grid.net/PS3GRID/live.php

We currently have as of this writing two members of this team effort, with our Leader AMD-USR_JL as our founder, our leader in points, and with some heads up notification will stay that way, lets hope. Bender10 is in a close second.

As of this writing we are currently ranked 29th place. But this is a new project and we could only get better with age. Is there anyone else out there with a PlayStation and would like to try your hand at this feel free? The link above is the explanation on how to setup your system to work for you!

Go Team :blob3:

How loud are these PS3 things? Do they still get too hot or has Sony done something to fix that?

mitchellds

they are very quiet, and don't even run that hot, I leave mine on 24x7 since I've had it. Running folding@home, playing games, toying with linux, etc.

Same here. Can't hear it run on F@H and it's just warm, not hot. I keep having to turn the TV on and setting it to video to verify it's actually running.
