Recently I've noticed an annoying problem on several of my WinXP Pro SP2 computers. The BOINC Manager won't allow me to change tabs say from Projects to Tasks. When I click it doesn't respond, the mouse arrow turns into an hourglass and if I click again or several times then BOINC throws up a message on the top line saying (not responding).

I have found this with 5.10.8 ever since I updated the file definitions for AdAware 2007 earlier this week. I have tried installing 5.10.13 and also 5.8.16 but they all have this problem. If I terminate boincmgr.exe I still see projects still running. If I kill these and try to restart BOINC the phenomenon happens again.

Anybody else having this issue? Any solution?

I have had it long ago but I canĀ“t remember what was the cause and how I got rid of it. Maybe it was eOn or AdAware or I had started 2 Boinc task managers of mistake. Or a WU from any project as "locked" task manager. Anaway I got rid of it relatively quick.:icon_rolleyes:

You wouldn't happen to be running chess960 on the machine you are having trouble with, would you?

Yes, along with BelgianBeer, Pirates, DepSpid, Riesel Sieve and Cosmology, and on another box it has Burp also.

How do I detach from it when I cannot control the BOINC Manager? Is there a file to modify in Windows Explorer?

Since it's a WinXP Machine see if you can bring up the Task Manager & see what is hogging your Resources, then just Kill (Stop) the Process that is doing so. If you think 1 of the Riesel Sieve Wu's is the problem go into the BOINC Directory and delete the Slot that it's in too.

When you re-start BOINC you'll get an error message about a missing Wu or something but BOINC should run okay then, hopefully anyway ...

If you want to Detach the PC from the Project when BOINC is shut down just delete the Project Account_URL from the BOINC Directory, you'll get error messages again when re-starting BOINC but it should run ... Just a few things to try ...

I find this happens when it's connecting to a server. :( Bar that it works fine.

I have a partial solution:
1. Uninstall BOINC using Windows Add/Remove from Control Panel.
2. From a CMD box run regedit.exe
3. Search (F3) for BOINC and delete every record it finds.
4. Re-boot PC
5. Download the latest BOINC (5.10.13)
6. Install BOINC
7. If you are lucky it eventually attaches to localconfig and finds all the projects you had attached that PC to. This was the case for 3 of my PCs. If you are unlucky, I had one example like this, you have to re-attach to all the projects again.
8. You have to re-size the window and adjust all the column widths again so that BOINC Manager looks reasonable again.
9. Watch it crunch tasks again and ENJOY the ability to check the different Tabs AGAIN without BOINC doing its not responding dummy-spit. :icon_wink:
