We have received the grant money from NASA. Part of this money will be used soon to acquire a dedicated server, and by February 2008 the new server should be up and running. Between now and then, not much will happen, but expect a period of about a week during the which orbit@home will be down because of the server transition. For several reasons, we're also debating the possibility to start with a fresh installation of BOINC, that would thus require a new registration by all the users. We expect to start to develop actively this project in March 2008. Thanks for waiting for such a long time, and see you then.

If anyone doesn't remember anymore what Orbit@Home is, it is a project that aims to keep track of the near-earth objects and their trajectories at all times, to prevent us for example from being hit by a meteor without warning. :icon_wink:

I think they are. But you know how it is, they alone can only do so much. :icon_rolleyes:
If I'm not mistaken it's in the "Armaggeddon" movie with Bruce Willis, where there's a guy from NASA that says that their budget only allows them to keep track of about 4% of the sky.

I just received an Orbit task on my core duo laptop. Estimate is 43.5 hours.

Don't look for that to complete in 43.5 hours. They all seem to be taking at least 170+ on a q6600. The estimation for these workunits are way, way off! We're approaching CPDN lengths without trickle updates!:shocked:

Yep, gotta have a lot of patience with these ones and hope to God they don't crash (which has been happening!). I have one workunit on my Q6600 that is at 111+ hrs. @ 51% completed.

Good Idea Vaughan, I wish now I would have done the same thing with the 4 I have be because these things are like the Eveready Battery Bunny, he just keeps going & going & going ... :icon_lol:
The 4 I have are @ about 210 Hr's now and within less than an hour to completion but that could still take 15-20 hours before their done the way these things run ... :icon_rolleyes:
I won't be running any more unless theres a Trickle Credit System put in place or the Wu's get a lot shorter, somewhere in the 1-2 hour range would be more stress-less worrying if their going to crash or not ... :)

Actually it's the Energizer Bunny which is a Subsidiary of Eveready ... :icon_razz:

I'm with you on this one. I'm not one to crunch projects just on how much credit they give (whatever amount that gets me to 100k:icon_wink:). However, I don't like losing a ton of computing time, if it could have been used by another, more stable project. uFluids will give you credit for failed workunits most of the time, and if a trickle system isn't implemented, at least give us something to make up for the time put forth.
The way things are going, I hope they are going to just release shorter running workunits after these "beasts" are killed off!

I couldn't agree more. I had one that twice failed to resume from a checkpoint and at 80 hours crunching with zero progress :sad5: I killed it as impossible. Dave.
