temps???

Guys I have a weird phenomenon on my Q6600. Its oc'ed to 3.6 GHz (401*9) at 1.55 volts (in bios) and 1.48 volts load in speedfan (1.53 volts idle). I'm running primegrid momentarily and i've noticed it ups the temps hugely. on coretemp it says 70 degrees celsius (at least) on all cores! speedfan is more moderate and reports temps from 50-60 degrees. any ideas on which one to believe? I have a feeling i'm frying my cpu here (btw the NB is running at 73 degrees speedfan says! it has more volts, but its a damn high temp!)

on the amd coretemp and speedfan always perfectly agree on the temps, thats why i think its weird

When my AMD64 was new I had too high temp so I took the computer to the reseller and he upgraded the BIOS. After all was fine.

:cussing:i tried everything to get that new bios on that mobo but it doesnt work!!! msi live update through the web doesnt work, the installed version doesnt work, if i download the bios and i try to use the program that comes with it it says i dont have the right mobo, but i do!

the amd has similar problems, liveupdate doesnt work at all and the included exe file gives a brief dos window that closes immediately!

all in all i have 2 msi mobos that are not able to run liveupdate and not able to flash the bios, f*ck you msi, i hate you guys!

You can try Updating the BIOS but I doubt it will make any differences in your CPU Temp's, it never made any in any of the Quads I run anyway. The main problem I see is that when running the PrimeGrid Project WU's is that your CPU can run 5c to 10c higher than when running some of the other Projects.

Also 1.55 Volts is a lot of Voltage to be running to get to 3.6Ghz, I have several CPU's running @ 3.6Ghz but their only using 1.40 to 1.45 Volts to get there. I assume your running some sort of aftermarket cooler on the CPU to run @ 3.6Ghz, if not then thats an option too, get a better Cooler.

I don't think 70c will ruin the CPU as Quads are noted to run fairly hot but I wouldn't want to go any higher, I had 1 running about 75c for several months until I put a better cooler on it and it never has had any problems yet ... :icon_neutral:

Is there an over-temp protection setting in the BIOS?

Also, there's some info on the Intel website re: temps to expect from cores.

Each CPU & Motherboard combination will be different on the speed you can reach even when using the same Model CPU & Motherboard. Some of mine will run 3.6, some 3.5 some 3.4 & some a low as 2.98 only.

The revision of the CPU & Motherboard cam make a difference even, you may simply have to run a little lower in order to run stable or lower your temps if your unhappy with what it's running at now.

Well I'm running at 1.5 volts now (bios) which gives 1.46-1.47 idle and drops to 1.42-1.43 load. all lower fail, wonder if this one will last. the temps are still horrible (cooler is and ultra 120 extreme from thermalright, so its good)

You can believe either 1 of them, CoreTemp takes it's readings from the Center of the Die where it's hotter & Speedfan takes it's reading further out on the Die where the Temps are lower. I use CoreTemp on all my Quads as I want to know the higest Temps it's reaching, I try to keep them under 60c but will run a little higher if need be and it's running stable ... :icon_neutral:

good, still have some headroom then hahaha (thinking of lapping the cpu and the heatsink now, should shave off some heat)

rebooted again, now load @ 1.46 volts, hope it can last at this voltage. temps are crazy again

if i had the money, I would. But these puters already proved to be a heavy cash flow problem.
