Yes, I have 1 ..... planning on more soon.

Oc'd it yet? Running on what MB ? How does it compare output wise to your best Q6600 cpu on a given project ?

Ditto I'm also interested in what mobo you selected and why.

AMDave has bought a Phenom recently - see his current Riesel/Sierpinski Base 5 LLR/PRP scores. Hopefully he'll see this thread and respond.

Danish Dynamite - what board did you get? Was it an MSI?

I'm waiting on the 9X50's until the new MBs with the 750 southbridge come out. supposed to overclock much better.

side note, kinda short on funds now anyway.

MB is the ASUS M3A, (it was a cpu/motherboard bundle special sale). I do not overclock my machines, too many machines to deal with and cooling is enough of a problem without adding more time and expense by overclocking.

So far, I have only run Milkyway and SOB on the machine. SOB is hard to compare machine to machine as the rate differs greatly from one k/n pair to another k/n pair. But on Milkyway it is about 20% to 25% faster than my Q6600's.

I think the next test will be on OGR-25, I really want to see how it compares to the Q6600's on this project.

I have:
the Phenom 9750 (stock CPU fan)
with 2GB DUAL DDR2 RAM (it can take 8GB - and it will later on ;) )
500GB HDD
512MB NVIDIA 9600GT (I have 2 AMD cards as well so don't flame me) giving it's best to a
22" ViewSonic VA2226w LCD screen (really great picture at 1680x1050)
all held together by the ASUS M3A78-EH motherboard.

I was not sure about this mobo to start with.
I was originally intending on getting the cheaper M2N-MX-SE.
the ASUS M3A78-EH is holding up very nicely in terms of compatibility, expansion and stability so far.

I had a rattle in the case, but once I tracked that down it has become really quiet.
It's sitting on my desk 6 inches from me at the moment and all I can hear is the fans in my son's older PC 4 feet away.

I no longer o/c
the expense to replace a CPU is not as much a problem as the inconvenience
and now there are 4 cores on a die the impact is greater.

Fedora 9 x86_64, if anyone is interested. :icon_mrgreen:

Oh, should have mentioned, performance wise, after I fired it up, I put it on Poem, within 3 weeks, it was No. 12 in top hosts for the project (just chewing up those intel's !!), but since the big race, I've dropped back to No. 38. It can't compete with the 8 core zeon's I guess :(

Sure would be nice to see some project comparisons against the Q series quads. I'd like to get a new systems, a quad naturally, and I'd like to do an AMD one. But at the same time there's the old bang for the buck thing. It also looks like the newer Q series are using less electricity than the amd quads from what I've seen on the data sheets. ???

MSI K9A2 CF-F (you will need at least bios version 1.5 for phenom)

I have one of those boards with a 9850 in it and it works very well so far. I haven't tried to overclock it much yet. I also haven't tried to add 4 video cards to it yet.

After a few days of internal debating like the dickens as to whether I should get a q6600, or one of the new phenoms, I bit the bullet tonight and made my order.

1 AMD Phenom X4-9850 Black
1 GA-78GM-SH2 AM2+ Phenom Motherboard
1 4gb DDR2 PC6400 Twinx Corsair (2 2gb sticks)
Tax for the good old governor,
and overnight shipping,
came to a grand total of $432.08

Ordered through Fry's. Could have done the NewEgg thing and saved a couple pennies, but then the shipping would have been more. And when I go to the coast this weekend I go past Fry's anyway so I can return anything if I'm unlucky... Not! (knock-on-wood)

So this puppy is a 125W bugger :icon_rolleyes:

however, I decided to give it a try since I've been an AMD fan since they started releasing cpu's, and I don't want to see Intel end up being the only act in town.

I plan to run OpenSuse 10.3 on it, which is what I've got a q6600 running, so I can do some comparisson testing between the two on linux. So I'm excited about it and anxiously waiting for it. I noticed that NewEgg has received some Black 9950's now, clocking at 2.6g, where the 9850 is 2.5g.

if you plan on overclocking, you should have waited another week or so for the new boards with the amd750 southbridge. 100-300 mhz higher on lower volts. according to anandtech's preliminary testing.

thats cool, you'll be happy with your choice then. I have two phenom 9600BE's running on that board, both clocked at 2.5 Ghz. very happy with them.

Brucifer
07-29-2008, 11:36 PM
yup, no overclocking and no fancy graphics. Just run pure plain old text terminals and let all that processing power go to the projects. :)

Glad to hear that you are happy with the mobo. I just got the overnight package a few minutes ago. Unfortunately I have a "function" to go to tonight so I can't start playing with the new toy yet. But I'll get to it either really late tonight or else first thing in the morning. :icon_mrgreen:

Pretty excited about it as I'm really curious how AMD is going to do agains the Core2 world.

It has been cooking in for about 8 hours now. I've got 4 cores running on D2OL and it is putting out some HEAT. Will see how the output averages in the morning. I hope that the output is something fabulous in the morning, but I don't really expect it to be anything more than what the q6600 does. The problem with d2ol is that there isn't really any uniformity to the various work units. There is quite a spread between what the 4 cores are outputting, however that I attribute to the different type work units. But like I said, it's putting out some heat, both the CPU and also the power supply.

The CPU fan is a really hefty bugger, complete with pipes. It's running quiet though, which is good.

Probably end up sucking up a lot more juice too, besides shortening the life of the chip... :icon_rolleyes:

BE = Black Edition

Nflight qoute: If you check out the WCG forums you will find that everyone else has the same issue with the WCG widget.
It is a dynamic link.
If they pulled a finger out they could generate a static image periodically, but I remember them saying they would not do that because there are simply millions of members - too many.

Most recommendation lead to using other site's -sigs for that project or even setting up a routine on your own machine to regularly generate your own.

Sad but true.

Looks like it is a nice little display but it would be better to find something that is stationary not dynamic like the WCG item you would like to place in your signature! Sorry

Well I just ate up one power supply on the 9850. So I went out and bought an Antec 650watt earthpower bugger. All I have in the system is the m/b, cpu, and the HD. It is running on the internal video, no fancy add-in card.

Jason1478963

I'm running my 9850 on a 500 watt liberty enermax at the moment. I'm not sure how well it would do if I started crunching with the 4850 GPU in there. I think if I try crossfire I would need to upgrade the power supply as well. I hope you have better luck this time around Brucifer.

Brucifer
08-10-2008, 06:10 PM
Yep, it is much happier with the 650 Antec Earthwatt p/s. Less overall heat coming off it too now. :)

Output wise on D2OL with no overclocking it is putting out just a smidge over a q6600.

On running LLRNET I was getting .4+ms per itteration on a q6600 and .8+ per itteration on the 9850 running the same number ranges from the same server. I have not tried sieving. So the Intel is still the superior choice for running LLR/LLRNET.

I have played with no boinc projects, nor have I tried the 9850 on moneybee yet.

So as things sit now, all in all, I'm pretty happy with the Phenom. I was hoping that it would do better on the llrnet stuff but evidently we are still running differently due to the memory access design issues. I would not really expect overclocking to accomplish much on llrnet. As for D2OL, overclocking would improve the output there. But as this stuff is already costing a penney or two now, I'm not really into shortening the cpu life or introducing the possibility of crunching result instability into projects I contribute to.

And while AMD did sell this chip unlocked, I would like to believe that they took the most advantageous overall clock rate into account in deciding where to set the stock clock rate.
