Hi guys, I just reprogram my old laptop a Compac Presario with Ubuntu 8.04 and all loaded fine and work fine. I LOADED BOINC FOR Linux from Ubuntu and had it install. THE PROBLEM IS THAT IT DO NOT WANT TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE SERVER. I try going to the advance menu and the computer and enter my login and passord but it decline to connect. Any sujestions?

Open the BOINC Manager
click on the Activity menu item
select "Network activity suspended"
It will not attempt to connect to the network until you go back there and change it back to one of the other two settings.

I had the same problem.
Here's what you need to do
Find out where on the disk BOINC has been installed to
Load BOINCCMD into memory
Load BOINC Manager, which will then connect to the localhost (boinccmd)
You should then find it'll connect.
P.S. Don't ask me which directory BOINC is installed into.

Thank you spikey_richie.
Maybe I need glasses.
Now when I read Borfil's post again I see "IT" not "I".
I know what is happening here.
In Ubuntu, in the "Add/Remove Applications" Tool if you search for BOINC (or boinc) you will find an application listed as "BOINC Manager".
The problem you have is that it is only the Manager GUI interface and not the client engine.
To get both the client AND the manager, open a Terminal window and paste in the following
sudo apt-get install boinc-client boinc-managerand then press enter. You will get asked for your password and then asked if you are sure you want to download and install it. (enter "Y" or "N" depending on your choice)
I really like to have more control over which version and under which user-account that application runs under.
I prefer not to install BOINC from the Ubuntu repository.
It is also a few versions behind the current and available development versions.
I tend to download the latest installer (.sh) from Berkeley and do the rest myself.

No problem Borfil.
If you want to stick with the Fedora or Ubuntu version, the instructions here should get you working with BOINC:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_on_Linux#Ubuntu
That instruction is based on fedora, but a note at the bottom says how to install on Ubuntu.
You can find more specific information on BOINC on Ubuntu here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BOINC
But, as I said above, that is not the method I use and I have read about lots of people having problems with the BOINC from the Ubuntu repository.
My advice is, while connected to the internet:
1) Remove the Ubuntu version of BOINC using the Add/Remove tool.
1a) or enter "sudo apt-get remove boinc-client boinc-manager" and press the {ENTER} key, in a terminal window.
2) download the latest version of BOINC to your home folder from http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php for your Laptop (Linux x86)
3) open a terminal window (it should open in your home folder by default)
4) enter "chmod a+x BOINC*" and press the {ENTER} key, to make it runnable
5) enter "./BOINC" and press the TAB key to auto-complete the filename and then press the {ENTER} key, to start the install.
6) When the install is finished, Open the BOINC folder in your file manager
7) double-click on the file "boincmgr" which should start the BOINC Manager (and the boinc client will start at the same time).
This works for me (and I believe most people) on 32-bit and 64-bit linux of Fedora, Ubuntu, SuSE, CentOS, Mandriva
Let us know if that works for you.

Well guys, thanks for all your help. I spend a whole day reading about linux and learning the basic, then I found the Kubuntu upgrade, and wala it work like a charm. I had no problems installing it nor running boinc. I been testing and old pc and will place one of my old 1.7 pc on it tomorrow, If all goes well I might migrate completetly to linux. I found it much stable and better than Window(any version), Plus it is very good on the pockets.
I have to do some studiying and learn the ins and out of the system, but it seems it is not that dificult than Ada or C++, or even Java.
What took me by surprise is that I have been using windows for so long and now finding linux and all the new advantages and drivers it is a real great deal. I have notice that the pc even run much faster and much more stable than the other junk I was using.
In just 5 days I have fall in love with it. I will have to keep one pc on windows, for obvious reasons , there are certains programs that I need to use that required windows, but I'm planing to get one additional Hd so that I can set both system in one pc .
Only one question which I have not been able to figure out. How can I force Boinc to start running at boot-up and to work as a screen saver in linux ukubuntu. Any sugestions? or tricks?
Thanks:icon_razz::icon_mrgreen:

The easy way is just goto the GUI /system/preferences/sessions drop down menu and select the startup menu tab, then hit the add button, browse to the boinc/runmanger program and add that. Simple as that. I love ubuntu, its great stuff. Check out Openoffice for Linux. Another great (Free) reason to put MS on a shelf. Get rid of your expensive MS Office suite. Check it out. http://why.openoffice.org/index.html Have fun.

Thanks to all of you guys for all the advise, I finally got working . The easiest way was by doing the following
go to the terminal enter as the administrator and enter the following
apt-get update
apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager
that is all and it work like a charm.
My problem now is that my pentium dual core D 3ghz with 4 meg of memory do not want to install ubuntu, kubuntu, nor Suse, I have manage to install ubuntu and kubuntu on all my AMD and a couple of ols Pentium Intel 1.7 but on the two new pc the Desktop and one Laptop it will not load. It goes thru the process and all check out fine, but when it reboot and linux is suppose to come up it just hang.
I'm about to trash both Intel pc and burn them. And get new AMD's. I'm still waiting for the new one to arrived but these two Intell are a pain in the A__s. The run great with Windows as long as it is XP service pack3 , Vista I hate it to F____g slow.
Thanks. :icon_razz:

Login to Windows as you normally would, then run this http://wubi-installer.org/ Wubi will download Ubuntu for you too, you don't need to have an .ISO image to hand.
It'll download and install Ubuntu on your HDD, then when you reboot you'll be presented with a menu to jump into Ubuntu or Windows :)
Works a charm for me. I have a HDD split in 2, Windows on C: and Linux on D:
All of my apps and docs are then on another HDD (E:) so I can access them regardless of which O/S i'm in.

Spike;
I tried that. I douwn the 32 and 64 bit Ubuntu, Kubuntu, SuSe, Fedora, They all work great in all my pc except the P% Asus, then the news came. PE from ASUS dont run Linux which comes back to my original intuitiun, B G had paid someone so that some board or cpu would not run linux, he do not want competition,
But he has a sorprice, I rather change board than to use xp or Vista again. That is an operatin system which is dead for me. He might have the marketing uphand but soon, very soon, he will loose the batle, cuz I have visited many universities here and a;; around Asia and all are participating in one way or another with linux and conical to bring linux at par , I mean to such hights that it will make windos look like a baby. I seen things on what they are working on for linux which is out of this wolrd.
I have found a new toy. I'm sold on linux, there is no way I will use ms again execpt for the 2 pc whhich I'm force at the moment to use, but I talk to a friend incharge of the San Carlos University who work and teach computers, thay have a lab dedicated exclusively for linux with more than 200 top notch students working on it. They will barrow my pc next week to see what they need to do to make it run at least versio 8.04
