View Full Version : AMD Users RACE - Finished!!

Here it is, the official and final AMD Users RACE thread after all the input received and corrections applied. :)
The Contest Plan
So, as already said in this thread (http://amdusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5864), in a nutshell the plan is the following...
- Championship style with 4 Races in different projects
- 3 distinct race categories (1-core, 2-cores, and 4-cores) will be running in parallel.
- Each participant can apply to one or more of the race categories, provided it has enough hosts to sign up for all the categories applied.
- Participants can submit a single host or a group of hosts for each desired category. Both single, and groups, must match the number of cores of the category. For example, 2 dual-cores can be grouped to run in the quad-core category.
- Each host may only be signed up in one race category. The same host can't be in two parallel races.
NOTE: HyperThreaded Intels count double if hyperthreading is active. A single core hyperthreaded intel will count as a dual-core because it's running as dual-core. (Altough I know it doesn't have the performance of a real dual-core)
NOTE 2: The special case of the Phenom X3, with 3 cores, makes it unfit for any of the categories. But if the owner pairs it with another single core host, that will make it a total of 4 cores, which is good for the 4-core category.
How to participate
For participation in the race, you'll have to "sign up". That just means that you need to post here to tell me that you want to race and give me the host IDs of the machines that will be running.
But guys, I can only accept people that have been registered in the forums for at least three months and crunch for the Team. If you are reading this but are not registered, don't feel bad because we organize races every now and then. Just register here, keep crunching with us, and keep an eye on the boards for the next race. :)
Now to sum up the rules in a nutshell, each participant can only submit one entry for each category. You can race on both categories, but only with one entry on each, and with different hosts on each. So choose wisely the best host(s) for each category that you can, it can make the difference.
NOTE: The hosts that you apply for each race need to be publicly viewable. That means that if you have your hosts hidden, you have to set them to show on your boinc preferences.
NOTE 2: For each project the host id is a different number. I'll ask for the new IDs before each race.
Race Projects and calendar
As said before, the plan is a 4 race event on different projects. Each race should fit in a week, 6 days long race and the 7th day free for making preparations and switching projects. The measurement unit will be the total credits, and at the end of each race the top 5 participants with the most credits will receive a number of points from 5 to 1 according to their final ranking. The contest champions will be the participants with the highest number of points awarded in each category, after the 4 races. In case of a tie, the next factor will be number of race victories. And if still it remains a tie, the last tie-breaking factor will be the total ammount of credits of the 4 races, which I don't believe any two people will do equal. :)
First race should start May 18th, and will be on Rosetta@Home. Following projects are still to be defined. A preliminary calendar should be like this:
May 18th - May 23rd - Rosetta@Home
May 25th - May 30th - POEM@Home
June 1st - June 6th - Genetic Life
June 8th - June 13th - Enigma@Home
June 14th - Final results display & my Birthday! :icon_mrgreen:
The undefined projects will be voted upon in a poll.
Prizes
This is the part everyone was anxious to read. :) We have received two offers to be used as contest prizes.
For the 4-core race the prize is one EVGA GeForce GTX-260. This monster gpu will give you both incredible graphics in games, and incredible points in gpu crunching! You do not want to miss this chance of getting one for free! :)
For the 2-core race the prize is one Intel Core2Duo E8400. Altough we're an AMD oriented team, we recognize a good cpu when we see it, even if it's of the competition. This bad boy dual-core runs at stock speed of 3GHz but has been successfully pushed beyond 4GHz.
And for the 1-core race, the prize is one official AMD Users T-Shirt, with choice of white or black. Unlike the previous two prizes, this one is not yet on stock and will depend on the body size of the winner. :icon_wink: Upon the contest finish, the winner will be asked for size and choice of color, and then the prize will be sent.
I hope everyone understood the general idea. Any questions, comments, or ideas, post them below! :)

I'm just fixing up a kind of manual mass-mailing to AMD Users, to inform people that don't come by the forums often about the contest and how to participate too. Maybe we could get some more people joining in the fun. :)

Here's a great CPU that works like a horse and OC's nicely. Its only defect is the manufacturer, but we can overlook that can't we fellows? :icon_mrgreen:

This next pic was taken by its owner. As it shows, this bad boy can be pushed beyond 4GHz!
I'll have to confirm with the prize donor, but I think that OC was done on air cooling. :)
EDIT: I was correct, it was with a Zalman 9500 cooler.

speaking of coolers, The Dark Knight uses the stock AM2/AM2+ (maybe even 939?) .. uhm .. clamp thingies -- one thing i've been looking for since losing my zalman custom attachments on one of their 7000 series coolers. (ie, like the 9500 AM2)

for our use, i'd say yes except for i7. AMD may have their hands full with this one (just see its 2nd pass x264 encode times).
mobo is a bitch of an investment (i have only once before paid more than $90 for a mobo). i had to buy a third party northbridge cooler, too, since MSI effed up. i guess i'll have a story after the contest...

Some projects already require newer boinc versions, I don't know if rosetta is one of those... but with v6.6.20 here everything runs ok.
PcManiac
05-09-2009, 07:13 PM
I agree, I am running 6.6.20 without any problems related to BOINC...
the problems I am running into today are completely coffee related... or lack thereof.
I decided that if I was going to OC my computer, I had better use some Artic Silver 5 thermal compound rather than the stuff that comes on a retail HSF.
I scraped all the old stuff off, applied a nice thin layer of the new stuff...
popped it all back together, and bumped up my "MHz"...
for some reason, my computer wouldn't get to vista... just a boot-loop.
so I entered the setup again, and checked the "PC Heath" status.
the CPU temp was 44c and climbing!! Crap!
I looked inside my computer, and the fan was not moving... yeah, I never plugged it in :icon_redface:
so I blame the lack of coffee!!!:icon_twisted: hehe
oh... and the 4200+ doesn't like to run at 2.7+ Ghz...not on stock air anyway... :icon_razz:
plonk420
05-10-2009, 04:29 AM
the sad thing is that 44C isn't abnormal for me (small cramped HTPC case, poorly ventilated old antec case, AMD stock fans) and i would have just let it run... i'm used to 50-60C, altho X3 didn't seem to like 60C... my 939 X2 4600 ran happily at about there year in and out...

Ah! A fellow AMD User that I've seen time and again on the stats, but not here in the forum. Welcome home! :)
You forgot to mention the year on the "February 7th".... it's 2007.
I found you on Rosetta@Home and on WCG as well. :)

I think altough you only registered today, there should be no problem in you racing along, you're a proven AMD User.
There's only one drawback though, the host ID you supplied is not associated with the Team. I even found odd that the host owner was "Administrator" and not you, but then I figured that it could be a second registration you have.
Just make sure to switch the host to the "AbadI)oN" user, or join the team with the "Administrator" user (either way works), and then I'll sign you in. :)

Does the owner name depend on the user that runs boinc manager? Then I probably should I create another account on my PC and run boinc there?
PS: Thanks for warm welcome greeting)

No need to, actually when you install boinc it already creates a separate user on Windows with lower level permissions to run the applications on a kind of closed environment, and minimize damage in case of a project happens to spread a virus for example.
The owner of a host only depends on the email you use when you attach to the project on boinc manager. If you detach from rosetta and attach again with the email address (and password) of the "AbadI)on" account, that host will go to that account. It will generate a new host id though.
AbadI)oN
05-11-2009, 07:09 PM
In task manager proccesses boincmgr.exe, boinctray.exe and rosetta* projects are running from Administrator account. So I need do detach rosetta then create "AbadI)oN" account, run boinc there and then attach rosetta?
NeoGen
05-11-2009, 07:45 PM
No, no need to. Boinc account is independent from the windows account.
If you want to change the host to the boinc AbadI)on account, you can do it in your current windows user, just go to the boinc manager, detach rosetta, and attach again, and when boinc asks for an email and password, use the email and password that you have for the AbadI)on account on rosetta.

Do you have WUs still on queue? Rosetta may keep from sending more if you still have unfinished work.
I had some, and figured the best to do was to make a reset on the project. The downside was that I had to download the apps, and everything else again, 20+ Mb.

Anyone understand how Rosetta gives out credit? I find it very mysterious.
I'm experimenting with longer WUs (I started with 1hr WUs, been increasing by an hour each day during the race) and noticed when I hit the 4 hours/WU, things went screwy.
http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/workunit.php?wuid=230453951 - ~3 hours, 107.47 credits
http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/workunit.php?wuid=230514691 - ~4 hours, 106.06 credits
I fail to see how doing an extra hour of work means I get less credit than a WU that took less time. :icon_mad:

I will have to start with or without our fellows. I'll leave placeholders for their hosts and collect the data of the people I can. As soon as I have their IDs I'll fill it in with their WUs.
As the saying goes, "The show must go on".

and hopefully i won´t miss the point-awarding ranks again.....

Is it just me or are the POEM WUs taking a really long time?
I have one that is crunching for almost 6 hours, and is only at 49%.

NeoGen: What kind of WU do you have?

I have peptide_415 too, but it's already over 6 hours and only 52% so far.
And on top of that I've had 3 power outages today, so this is not being a good start for me. :-(
Vaughan and gamer, your WUs are being scanned through as I write. :)

Hey... this project awards fixed credit per WU, so this will really be a race of who can crunch faster. :)
I'm taking a look at you guys stats already, only a handfull of WUs finished and granted yet, but they all fall between 1 and 2 hours, so I must have picked up a bad WU. I'll see how it goes with the rest of the WUs I have here to crunch yet.

I found a singlecore-PC for the race
1core (http://boinc.fzk.de/poem/show_host_detail.php?hostid=45134)
2core (http://boinc.fzk.de/poem/show_host_detail.php?hostid=44066)
And where are the stats I'm waiting for? :icon_lol:

You're in txt.file, on both 2 and 1 cores now. :)
The stats for race 2 are still pretty much empty, the race is only officially started in about one hour, and I'm even missing some people's hosts yet.
But I can tell you that you're one of the few people that has finished results already, which gives you a slight head start. :)

We can dump your cached WUs now? I've been waiting until it officially started before reporting it. :icon_lol:
EDIT: Suggestion for the main stats page: Maybe you could link the headers (Race 1 - Rosetta@Home for example) to the detailed project stats.
And I noticed the title is "Contest 2007." I'm pretty sure it's 2009 now. :icon_wink:

Yea, in theory no one should dump the WUs before the race starts, but in the end it doesn't really matter. And who knows, boinc might just do that on its own, so it would be bad if I didn't accept those WUs. :)

Mitchell is doing great on both 4 and 2 core categories, with plonk right behind on 4-core, and Ramjet's Athlon64 3500+ is unstoppable in the 1-core category. :)
Link to the table is right below, in my sig. :icon_wink:

I actually saw a enigma machine on ebay about a year ago. It was claimed to be a authentic original with all kinds of supporting paperwork and historical proof. Wouldn't that be cool to have?

Even better reasons not to have entered this one - storms for the last week and a half or so have caused so many power outages, I've lost track. 6 in one evening is the record ... so far! It would have been more trouble than it's worth. Grats to everyone in the running.

And the competition is officially finished!!! :)
After 4 races in 4 different projects, with people running in 3 different categories, here are the final winners...
4-cores category - Mitchell, with an Intel i7 920
2-cores category - Mitchell, with an Intel Core2Duo E8400
1-core category - Ramjet, with an AMD Athlon64 3500+
I want to thank everyone for participating in this event, and I hope everyone had as much fun as I did. :)
Now, the prizes will be sent to the winners as promised. Me or an admin will contact you privately (by PM) for the shipping address of the prizes.
There may be one little extra surprise left in the bag here, I just have to confirm it before announcing. :)
Hope to see you all again in the next contest! :)

I posted on the other thread, so I'll quote myself here... :icon_lol:
It's true Ramjet! You won the prize. That was the surprise I said a while ago. :icon_santa:
Mitchell here is the donor of the 2-core prize, and he made me promise not to tell you guys that he was going to participate to show off the prize in first hand, and that if he happened to win the 2-core contest, the prize would go to the second placed man. :)
So, you have witnessed the raw power of that cpu in the 4 races we had, and mitchell said it can do even more. Imagine what you can do with it! :icon_wink:
Get in contact with mitchell by PM, and arrange with him for the delivery of the prize. I will have to ask your addy too, as well as t-shirt color and size, because I'm the sponsor of the 1-core category which you won! The prize will follow soon. :)
