View Full Version : 2 Terabytes and counting

Hopefully over tonight and tomorrow we will be able to take 15th place. we are very close and now ther is only 2 terabytes between us.

BeOS are down at just under 1 terabyte per day (956G) we are producing 2.88Tera per day. so we are outproducing by 1.93 Terabytes.
the exactl between our 2 total productions is 1.67 so within the next 24hours we can take 15th back.

just a few more days, thx everyone for all your support :thumbleft:

We did it.

10-14-2004, 09:04 AM
well done all, we are in the clear and now have 15th place

i dont reckon it is worth pushing for a higher position yet, teamTNT who have 14th are pushing 1.5T easily and there is quite a gap between our current scores.

AMDave
10-14-2004, 09:04 AM
We also drew their hand and saw the level that they are actually capable of running at when they want to. So if they close in later on, we'll know just how much to throw at it and for how long. ;)

Empty_5oul
10-14-2004, 09:09 AM
yep,

for the moment i reckon we should just get say a 10 Tera lead so we are just far enough ahead to be in the clear with no real thret. if they do start to pull back from new members, massive upgrades etc we will see it on the stats pretty quick.

Ototero
10-14-2004, 09:11 AM
Congrats all. And you Oli for driving us on. We took 2 places.

Good point Dave. We'll still need to trickle along keeping Beos at bay.

Now onwards and upwards. Where to next.

Time for a vote.

I say D2ol, there are only 4 of us playing, M Orwick, Morfeus630, AMDave and me. We've been rising quite steadily.

We could easily rise 1000 spaces.

Empty_5oul
10-14-2004, 09:27 AM
rise 1000 spaces :S ???

keep going on 17 for the moment until we decide what our next priority is to be.

AMDave

LOL He's got D2OL on the brain...
He meant to say GRID
(must be my e.s.p.)

Ototero
10-14-2004, 10:20 AM
Dave,

Right again, I meant Grid. And it would be places not spaces.

11am, it's been a looong day.

Take a hard look at the daily numbrs between us and TeamTNT. We are (or were)out producing them almost by a factor of three. 14th place isn't that much of a pipe dream!

Lets consolidate our current position then vote.

I've two machines running SOB but I'll be moving the XP of of it as soon as it finishes it's current proth test. It's a dog compared to the Athlon 64 running SOB. The AMD64 3000+ is running at 2.2 Ghz, stable at 47C and is pusing over 1 Meg in SOB on its own. The XP at best does 420K.

Ototero
10-14-2004, 12:17 PM
My Athlon 64 3000+ is running at 2.1 Ghz, stable at 58C (much higher than yours ).

It's doing about 900,000 in sob.

What cooler are you using ?? I'd love to lose 10C.

Jeff

I'm running at 27C :)!

Your ISP is cat.com? Peoria by chance?

Empty_5oul
10-14-2004, 12:41 PM
ototero how about you go back to DNET for the moment and let the restof us clear up on SOB so we keep our new position.
that should make the stats look a bit better.
personally i think SOB is too far for us to reach atm, if we leave our "spare" machines on it then when we have only 30ish Terabytes till taking a position i believe that is close enough.

in chessbrain and d2ol we have two positions that we could take quite easily.

Your ISP is cat.com? Peoria by chance?

Was that question for me?? My isp is Tiscali (European company)
Thanks for the cooler info. I wish mine was running that cool. Maybe the sensor is wrong. My mobo is msi k8m neo-v. The cooler was the item that came with the chip.

Oli

I've moved 2 machines from sob to f@h.

10-14-2004, 06:31 PM
Sorry for the confusion. My question was for spjeff69. Cat.com realistically be most anywhere on the planet, but their home is Peoria Illinois in the USA.

The stock cooler that comes with the AMD64 processors is good, but it this one is excellent. It uses a low RPM fan that is almost dead silent AND it does a super job of cooling at the same time.

Ototero
10-14-2004, 06:39 PM
Thanks,

The fan comes coated with stuff ready to stick to the chip. Would you suggest stripping that gunk off and using Artic Silver 5 ??

recently read an article comparing various heatsink compounds on Dan's Data

http://www.dansdata.com/

Interesting review. His tests did show a difference between the cheap versus high end compounds, but not that much... not near what you should be seeing for what we pay for the high end stuff. Use a good compound, don't use to much of it, and perhaps polish the base of the heat sink until its mirror smooth. And then use the money you saved by not paying for the most expensive heatsink compound and buy a bottle of decent wine.

Here's a link to the article:

Why would you think my isp is cat.com?

Empty_5oul
10-14-2004, 09:46 PM
personally i cant see it making a differnece. you are meant to use the thermal pads f you are gonna keep changing heatsink but paste if your gonna keep it. use whatever paste, if some comes free then try that it only provides quick heat transfer between the heatsink and processor, as long as there is a connection and it is not dry there should be no problem

I like the shape and stats of the fan rrcrain is using.
I also like the fact that they reduced its weight by 18grams.
I don't know why, though. It wouldn't fit in a laptop so the I hope they reduced the price as the real benefit would be in the manufacturing cost.

Today it was 36 degrees Centigrade, ambient temperature.
In my garage it was 38 degrees C.
Summer has not really started yet.
When the ambient temperature hits 46 C my garage will be at 48 to 49 C.

I left the ceiling hatch open one day (before we completed the insulation and the laser-temp-meter showed 51 C in the garage and 72 C on the lower side of the roof tiles !!! No bullsh*t.

vaughan should be able to vouch for this (in-spite of his more favourable global latitude...LOL) ... when you guys talk fans we're out looking for refridgeration units. I don't have any. I can't get one for each PC & there's no way I am going to aircondition the whole garage for the whole summer to pull the temp down from an avg 42 to 32 centigrade !

I do however have a 2nd hand vertical freezer sitting in my garage waiting for me to figure out how I can get 3 or 4 machines in there & cool it without getting moisture build up. Only 25% of the cooling element is ok so it only freezes now after about 10 days without being opened. I ran it a while ago for a big family function we had just to keep the food cool until it was served. The idea struck me so I kept it a bit longer (read "creative pipe-dream"). I can't seem to think of a way to extract the moisture without losing the temperature gradient. If I can't come up with any ideas It's on its way to the recyclers next weekend and I'll be back to running nights only again in about 1 month :-(

Dave,

Have you thought about water cooling your chips? There are quite a few kits around now.

Then you could throw the old fridge and make room for some beers.
;)

Beerknurd

Empty_5oul
10-15-2004, 11:02 AM
if you get a cooling system and have a spacious case you can store beers in the case aswell :P.

i have found http://www.arctic-cooling.com/ to be a good company for CPU's.

AMDave
10-15-2004, 11:07 AM
Ah. You assume too much grasshopper !
I do have a beer fridge.
As does every other self repecting Aussie. :D
It is a shame that there is too much residue in even the finest ale to use it for coolant. To combine 2 loves would have been very impressive

I was very impressed by the performance of the Zalman Resoirator:
http://www.crazypc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=938500
(note for vaughan - reviewed in last months APCMag)

but you still need a cooler ambient temp to allow for heat exchange to take place.

having a quality case will help you mate. i bought a thermaltake xaser V Wingo with side window. it is totally screeless and has 5 case fans, as well as a cap on roof for USBx2,firewire, headphones, mic.

http://www.thermaltake.com/xaserCase/WinGo/v8000a.htm

i have noticed a drop in ym average temperature, though haivng those 5 going and my Jet7 on full creats a lot of noise, just having 5 fans on and configuring them well with speed controls can become barely noticable - anyway after maybe a week i use use to the new fan din as it sounds totally different to my old case.
i have some of my own pics if i find any ill post them.

ototero if you read the summay or readme etc, some motherboards are the same etc so a different version will work though that particular spec isnt listed. if you really want e-mail the guy in charge and he will fins one the same or add your mobo to the list, that is the only way he improves as he cant afford every different mobo that comes out.
