Hi guys,
I would like to get the best out of my athlon64, but after reading i can't count how many articles, I have realized that i need some input from the team. Is anyone running the 64bit OS for windows? Or at least some ideas for me. Another possibility is I have been toying with the idea of learning linux. Do they make a reliable 64bit? Any help or comment is welcome

Thanks
Bill

I cant really help but was looking at 64 OS seeing as i want a 64processor (an fx really but not enough money for them :( ).

i found the windows 64 OS:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/evaluation/upgrade.mspx

it is only in "testing though" meaning there are still unsolved problems.

I downloaded the MS 64 beta. It installs on my 3000+ 64 without any issues.

I tried installing 2 different firewalls but without success. Couldn't load Norton AV either.

Without those 2 I'm not going on the net.

So its back to 32 bit.

Thanks guys.
That answered my questions. Looks like 32bit till they get 64 developed a little better.

you can have 2 OS installed on the same machine with it asking you which to load on start up, if you wanted to try full on 64 feel free - it would be a bit risky doing online stuff tho.

i would like to know how fast you can render and what your average new production speeds are both in DC projects and graphic/movie/video programs that would REALLY test the new power.

From what I've read, 32 bits apps on 64 bit OS does no better that 32 bit apps on 32 bit OS.

Linux is your option but I don't know any.

newer programs are becoming 64 bit compatible - bridging the gap as the 64 bit AMD does running 64 and 32 simultainously.
then when 64 computing takes off it will be more apps will be 64 until eventually there is no 32 anymore (tho. that is way off).

Well I downloaded and tried the 64bit windows beta. Ototero sure was right.
My firewall wouldnt load and norton AV crashed bad when trying to load. Another thing i noticed is i couldnt get a network card driver to load. So i didnt have to wory about internet access. I couldnt get boinc or SOB to run either, but that may have been because i tried to load norton first and it stuffed the OS. Will play with it some more and see if I can get something to work.

when you boot up next time try 17 first before loaidng anti virus or IE. if you cant get on net you dont really need AV tho, seeing as stuff would only get in from disk.

see what happens when you dont try it , guess that must be one of the major flaws then not noticing if cards are in or not, see if it recognises CD's / floppys.

just tried to boot to 64bit and try the things you asked. Couldnt boot. It says it has a corrupted file, so i tried to fix it. No go. Looks like have to reformat that drive and try again.

dont worry too much.

also from looking at you in CP i notice your processor is 64 3200 while mine is normal (32) 3200.
i dont know if you have any benchmarking software or anything similar but i would like to do the same test too compare results, would be interesting to see diffference.
im going to bed now anyway (is mid-night here in UK :O),
out of interest what motherboard are you using, and what graphics - you may have said but i forget lol :P

I am using a MSI K8T NEO board, which has the VIA K8T800 chipset and a Geoforce FX5200 128MB agp video card. I do have several diff benchmark programs. tell me which one you want to try and we will give it a go.

gd gd, i similarly have a geforce "AEOLUS FX 5200, 128MB AGP 8x"
so that means the test should be similar-ish.

on here i have aquamark and 3D mark, are these any good or do you hae something better --i can download something if you want.

k, kool.

that is 3D mark 03 havent got 04 yet (im guessing there is such a version)
do you want me to run while processor etc is idle with NOTHING running, [so that it is fair i think this would be best]

now what are those tests for???

BigDawg
11-13-2004, 03:29 AM
since 5oul and I have the same video card, and he has an xp3200 and I have
the athlon64 3200 , we wanted to see what the diff was in 32bit applications.

ok.... jabber on then.

Empty_5oul

from looking at the stats they seema bit odd in places, for instance my multi fill rate is massive compared to yours ?
then again your pixel shader destroys my speed.

if you had the next gfx card up i wouldnt be too bothered but seeing as they are the same i cant understand the such large speed differences between processors.

BigDawg
11-13-2004, 08:17 PM
you and me both, have been racking my brain to account for those big of differences between the cards. Unless under the advanced settings you have your global drivers set to high performance where i have mine set to best image quality.

Empty_5oul
11-14-2004, 09:53 AM
i have mailed you with the excel file i saved it to, this includes the drivers details, dates and versions.
only thing i can think off is where i borrowed battlefield: vietnam from a mate it had new drivers on that when i searched onlice i couldnt find them anywhere even on nividia site.
guess that could have made a difference.

k will do bill,

i just pulsed my results in and looking at the team page :

The team holds 0.01% percent of all the teams/users of this project.

i thought that was worthy of a post.
