I saw this project spotlighted on cnn.com:
http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/internet/11/16/science.ibm.grid.reut/index.html

the project site is here:
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/

They're just starting off...three hundred something members. Any desire to make a team? or is this project just more of the same?

Its funny you found that there, I was first introduced to DC by a story on CNN about Grid.org, and thats how I found my home here...:)

Ototero

I downloaded it and started processing. It's the same as Grid (but updated).

Shall we form a team. At least to get a presence on the list.

might as well ototero, i will dl and join.

on install i found you have to uninstall grid normal version for the new one to install, other wise it stops and fails.

Hi Kamaleigh.

long time between posts.
Nice to see you're well.

Looks like the IBM + Grid development team are remarketing UD-Grid.

Not much info on the site tho.

I get the impression that BOINC has got them worried that they may lose their Commercial income from the Drug companies and various Governments.

Certainly a lot of known team names have appeared in the list.

No notes though on the plans for the existing UD-Grid site.

Continuing both would fit with a strategy to grab a market (home-PC) stake (before BOINC takes it all)

But maybe I am being too cynical.

Empty_5oul
11-17-2004, 09:38 AM
maybe dave,
BOINC still has many flaws tho, i dont think ever having all the projects fully up and functionable. i dont think BOINC will take over for a while, maybe at one point when SOB is finished and either some of the other large projects become completed or dont need any more users - until then i think the stand alone products will do just as well.
at least running D2ol or SOB you know your machien will be processing all day while with BOINC it is a bit of a risk and needs checking frequently.

AMDave

For such a good project framework, Grid has 2 huge ommissions
1 - no WU cache - loses the non-broadband people
2 - and still no support for Unix / Linux / et al.
even now: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/join_now/system_requirements.html

It's like an OpenSource exclusion zone. Given who their investment partners are and their intent to promote commercial gain, that's not surprising.

BOINC covers all the bases and more by supporting a WU cache (to an extent), many OSs and also making the platform code available.

Also, whilst it is fairly recent BOINC as a platform is already pretty stable. Most of the problems now are related to the Project modules, not actually BOINC itself (per the BOINC forums). The rate at which projects are able to make the move into the BOINC framework is a credit to the platform developers.

If I was a Grid partner, I would be concerned with my investment, and with good reason ... BOINC is not the only OpenSource Grid platform that is capturing the philanthropic CPU-Cycle market.

This is not meant to be a promotion for BOINC or a derision of Grid, this is just how they stack up.

Team now created.

I got some data downloaded, it processed for 1 second then downloaded some more, and kept repeating this process.

It's turned off.

Excellent. The Team name is booked.
The team page will not render until tomorrow.
Oli & I have joined for a look see.

Mine is going.
Just as well - 4.5 Mb 1st download ! ontop of the 1.6Mb client by modem.
The client is mostly identical.
The graphic screen is a little changed. Very colourful.

Try restarting yours again.
Did you uninstall the old Grid first?

Oli has logged off but expect he should post soon.

AMDave

1.2 % in 10 mins on K7-7.

A bit too much colour on the graphics page .... wooooozy!

im back now, i had to uninstall old one.
i clicked download and then run on the new and as it opened to install it came up saying to do install process the old must hbe removed first, then "is it ok to remove" i said yes and it went and installed the new one.
they are practically identical, my credit didnt carry over tho :(

will have to see how you get on then dave i guess your task must be small, mine is run time 2 hours 15minutes and only 17% complete. guess i started with a big one. what is your overall performance score right now ??? mine is 117 compared to high-end desktop system

AMDave
11-17-2004, 12:08 PM
The host is definitely a "blank slate" with no data association to the existing Grid servers. Hence no transfer of details.

Overall performance score is low because it defaulted to 0.98Gb storage.
This will restore back to 5Gb (100) on next update. It's the only one you have input to in your profile. Same as before.
CPU performance is (100) K7-7 1300 against the comparison device which is a P4 1500.

MARK: 6.5% task done at the end of 60 mins processing time.

Process rate is actually a bit behind yours, concurs with the CPU performance estimate, mine at 100 yours at 117.

Found an annoying "feature" though.
I can't Alt-TAB to the client window.
It flicks into the forground and drops straigt back again behind any other window that is open. But if I minimise the other windows, there it is still open on the screen It only stays in front if I click the task-bar icon.
The old client didn't do that.

Going to let it run o-night. C U tmrw.

Ototero
11-17-2004, 12:31 PM
No old copy of grid to delete.

Overall Perf : 50
CPU Perf : 27

Seems to be running now.

EDIT, it has reset itself again, re-downloading

dont have a clue ototero, there is a thing on there new site as other people have had errors, when i checked no-one had that problem tho. seeing as it is new out someone will post with that soon and hopefully you can implement the solution.

im now on 25% done, but 3 hours processing. i work that out to be another 9 hours to go.

I work yours out to be 11hr 22 mins.

United Devices in specific and Grid in general has ALWAYS under rated AMD systems.
My AMD64 3400+ is only rateing at 100 when compared to a P4 1.5 That is just SO wrong.
Did get one system on and running and on team.

Empty_5oul

k fair enough dave, i hadnt worked yours out but hitting whatever % you had in the time seemed a lot - i now relaise it is comparible.

Its good your on team and have a comp there, by tomorrow as we all send our first result back our scores should rocket :thumbleft: hopefully we will be in top 10.

EDIT -- maybe top 100 - i just looked at stats and some teams are producing more than i thought.

i have finished my first grid unit, took 12 hours 5 mins and 5 secs and i claimed 411 points.

my system is now set to 10G capacity (current maximum) and my new device score is 180 :D , also i think the website is updated every 24 hours and it has been 21 since last update so before i go to bed i will know if my score has submitted successfully :thumbleft:

E@H team is in position 153. And we have new players there as well

A bit disappointed that other Grid proj is deleted when this one is installed. Good job I zipped it up before installing.

I might try to run both together.

are they going to "phase" the old one out now though ot run both in parallel ??
seems a bit odd to have it there twice.

we are now ranked 153 which is pretty good.

also looking in stats i found a team called athlon64 with only 5 members and all AMD machines, i have searched for them but cant get an e-mail anywhere :(. was gonna say did they want to join as we only have a few members right now but cant get their details up.
does anyone know how to view other members profiles on new grid

I've just joined both the AMD Users team on World Community Grid and this forum. Subsequent to affiliating myself with your team I returned my first work unit (30 hrs / 1261 points).

I'm looking forward to our team posting some great numbers and doing some good work for the project.

27 members now in WC Grid.
The DC world just got a little bigger due to the publicity that Kamaleigh observed.
This project is starting well. (IBM do their homework of course)

I hope some of the new team members visit the team Forum sometime.

BTW It seems you have resolved the problem with your install.
The 4 "rapid" WUs all counted and it has posted a WU that got a score similar to mine so maybe it is working OK now.

Dave, I got no points for those WUs on my PII 399 machine, Grid just logs the fact that I downloaded it. It processes for about 60 seconds, then goes to fetch some more data.

It has already been reported on the WCG forums by someone else.

Just a reminder that UD Grid and WC Grid install themselves as the screensaver as well.

So if you think you have stopped the client to run another project and your stats are low, remember to check that you have changed the screensaver setting back to what it was before you installed the Grid clients.

Riddle me this, friends:

My system rates 196. I get 1200 or so points with each return (twice the average). It takes me about 32 hours to process a work unit.

So, how is our team's Avg. CPU Time Per Result 18:50:46?

Do they issue paticularly processing-intensive work units to members with high device scores or does someone on our team have a supercomputer?

AMDave
11-21-2004, 08:51 AM
The length of time per WU can vary considerably (regardless of CPU)

Your time of 32 hours I would say is near the top end of the reach considering your CPU / PC rating. Your rating & the time it took would explain why you get such a high point value

example: my rating was 100 and I completed a WU in around 11 hours on a K7-7 but got only 186 points.

I expect that you will start to get shorter WUs in the near future & you will find that your machine will fly through them.

There is an additional factor involved in the calculation of the points also depending upon a perceived "value" of the results returned. This makes it difficult to compare contribution based even upon points. none-the-less it is still more appropriate than total time or # WUs f you are comparing results over a long period of time.

Nothing to worry about. You got some big Work Units and some good results there.

Empty_5oul
11-21-2004, 09:15 AM
your device rating bracket will depend on what you recieve.
if you only have 1G for grid then it will get smaller units than someone who has 10G for example.

i have a massive one right now - processed for 11h 5mins only 27% done. it will take about 48hours//2days to complete.

(I notice that the UD Grid is ranked by CPU time. I don't want to go back down 3 places. Shhh.) ;)

AMDave
11-22-2004, 11:30 AM
thats wyrd.

I sorted their stats-page by Points.
It seemed Ok.
Then I noticed that some poeple with results were not there.
They are on the next page, even though they have points and people on the previous page have "0"

just wyrd.

AMDave
11-22-2004, 11:36 AM
increase members per page from 50 to 100 and it sorts ok.

their sorting algorithm is "shifty". it queries the {# of members per page} then does the sort without completing the query first for the whole team !

Stuart. If we get more than 250 members you may have some interesting probs pulling down the stats. LOL. (unless they fix it of course)

Ototero
11-22-2004, 11:44 AM
I use points, same as the old grid.

And I've just noticed that my stats have only taken the 1st 50 people. This will be a problem for me

AMDave
11-22-2004, 11:54 AM
Stu,

please check again.
You have me at rank 13.
on their stats I am 13 by CPU time, but 16 by points.

Also, as I said above, set your # members per page to 100 on the WC Grid results page ... like so ...
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamMemberDetail.do?sort=points&teamId=Z95RSMBR9N1&pageNum=1&numRecordsPerPage=250
and you will not have the problem until we hit over 250 active members.

on the grid forum i found this so even from the member swho have done a little bit of work and now retired we still keep their points :

You can be a member of only one team at a time. You can, however, swtich teams. When you switch teams, any points you have accumulated with the prior team remain there, thus you will still appear in the team list. Any new work you complete will be credited to the new team. Points are only added to a team during the time you are a member of it.

There is an article "Buddy, spare some downtime" on page 10 in the Sydney Morning Herald's ICON section Saturday 27th November supposedly originating from Reuters about WorldCommunityGrid. I tried searching both SMH and Reuters and couldn't find it so I'll post the paragraph here that I have difficulty with.

"The project is not without its risks. In particular, the voluntary undertaking could run foul of computer administrators struggling to keep a tight rein on network security policies in order to ward off viruses."

What a load of codswallop.

The author of this mischievous bunk - Eric Auchard - does not present any evidence that running WCG in a voluntary manner causes network security issues due to viruses.
