I can't help but feel that any democracy that is built as a result of external influences will be rapidly erradicated by neighbouring factions shortly after the external support is withdrawn.

True.... But hopefully the government we help set up over there will be accepted. I would rather have a government run my life than a dictator that will kill you if you express an opinion.

at least democracy gives people who don't vote the opportunity to feel completely and utterly dopey when the person who does get in raises their taxes and cuts their benefits :shock:
I am happy to be in a voting democracy. (Even if my guy didn't win.)

i don't believe that we will see democracy in Iraq in our lifetime. it sounds like a great plan, but the inhabitants of Iraq will never accept it. in my opinion... its a hopeless cause that'll require more death.
