do you have a GPU (or set of eyes) that are bored? here are some non-interactive, realtime suggestions (mostly demoscene) to show The State of the Art, at least as of a certain time frame.
[skip to the GPU-wreckers via this anchor (http://amdusers.com/forum/showthread.php?8131-Bored-GPU-is-Bored!-(take-a-suggestion-leave-a-suggestion-please!)&p=72780#post72780)]
note: while you should always be careful, depending on what antivirus you use, some of the 64 and 4K demos could probably set off the air raid sirens. pouet.net/scene.org mirrors should be pretty trustable. i put a 99.9% trust in them.
note2: also, some of these may need an Nvidia GPU.
note3: graphical difficulty is probably graded considering an age of Radeon 5000 series+
note4: i guess i'll use (at least in my first suggestions) the symbol ᴰ to indicate that the demo ... well, kinda uses objects and visual effects that might be a bit cheesy to people not used to the demoscene, but, IMO, contribute to making it "graphically interesting" ...
anywho, if you have suggestions please leave them, too.
let's start off taking it easy on the GPU...
2003: Demo: farbrausch - the.popular.demo

2006: Demo: MFX - Deities (and the happier remix, Lucy in the Sky with Deities -- see below)
graphical difficulty: 4?/10

I remember back in the day (late 1990's or early 2000's) getting this spanish monthly magazine that included a CD with alot of software as usual but also some demoscene demos. They did some pretty amazing things back in the day. :)

yeah, i kinda lost track post-BBS ~1995, after i discovered MP3s and other various binaries on usenet.
then i got a bit obsessed with making my own MP3s. go go custom config.sys+autoexec.bat so i could rip CDDA on my unfriendly-to-ripping-CDDA CDROM!
you can probably find most, if not all of the big demos from back then on Youtube, thankfully! (or capped/demoscene.tv)

Thanks for your selections.
You brightened up an otherwise dreary wet weekend.
It is quite amazing how much they can fit into such small files and very interesting to see where the designers and graphic artists are taking the features.
I watched the You-Tube versions in HD where possible.
Some of those effects and renders are much better than I would have expected.
I haven't seen anything like these for a very long time.

the sparks are worthy of that.

LOL.
The difficulty rating is for the coder and the GPU at competition time.
Although the code is held back, you can download the executables for a REAL GPU test from their website.
Each of the zip files contains the exe (eg: for Win platforms) and a competition release note.
Example - Uncovering Static
uncovering static : final
a 64k intro presented at Assembly 2011 (where it placed 2nd in the combined _demo_ competition, like true elites)
by Fairlight & Alcatraz
code/visuals: smash / fairlight
synth: gopher / alcatraz
music: reed / fairlight
2d graphics: destop / cncd
http://directtovideo.wordpress.com
requires windows xp or later, directx9.0c (d3dx_43), a geforce 280 or better (or ati equivalent).
geforce 580 or radeon 6950 recommended.
native / recommended resolution: fullscreen 1280x720.
this is the final version & "director's cut".
it should be stable and work in window & fullscreen on all suitable configs, nvidia and ati included. honest.
(but it might not. we kill drivers.)
3dvision stereoscopic 3d support for suitable nvidia stereo 3d systems is included thanks to gargaj.
kkrunchy appears courtesy of ryg / farbrausch.
due to unfortunate circumstances the 64k intro competition at asm was sadly cancelled.
instead of holding it back for another 64k compo in future - which, given the state of 64k releases in recent years, might
not happen either - we thought we would play with the big boys in the democompo..
the compo being cancelled was only one thing in a long string of bad luck during the last few days at assembly. crashes,
problems and logistics were all against us. crashes that only occurred in exepacked assembler code; last-second fixes at the airport
gate. the universe was telling us very clearly it did not want us to release this, but our complete stubbornness made us do it
anyway. :) special thanks to the asm compo organisers we dragged out of bed in the middle of the night to test on the compomachine.
this is completely realtime in every way. the only precalc is to compile the shaders.
the synth is based on physical modelling; the rendering on distance field manipulation and polygonisation; the lighting on raycasted
ambient occlusion. the full scene is regenerated dynamically per frame.
only the [ download ] link contains the zip and exe. The rest are video capture of the exe running.
So if you want to see how hard they can push your GPU give them a go.
Quite fascinating when you have shader monitors running.
Sometimes they peak when you don't expect them to.
PS - sometimes they don't work well with multi-GPU. Crashes can occur. YMMV

Although all of them are beyond impressive, especially the ones that are packed up into only 64Kb, my two personal favorite ones are Mercury - The Timeless, and Fairlight - Ziphead.
To those who look at it and don't know what it is, they look like digital works of art (masterpieces for that matter!), but for those who do know a little bit of what this is and how it's made, this is the result of an inhuman amount of artistic design and coding skills that is beyond the comprehension of 99.9% of the people... it's just mind blowing! :)
