SSE2 Requirement for Windows Clients
Since our recent release last week, POEM++ requires a SSE2 capable PC.Sorry for not mentioning that before.

More... (http://boinc.fzk.de/poem/forum_thread.php?id=872)

Sounds alarming, but actually SSE2 (aka Streaming SIMD Extensions 2), was included from:

AMD K8-based CPUs (Athlon 64, Sempron 64, Turion 64, etc.)
AMD Phenom CPUs
Intel NetBurst-based CPUs (Pentium 4, Xeon, Celeron, Celeron D, etc.)
Intel Pentium M and Celeron M
Intel Core family (including Intel Core 2, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7)
Intel Atom
Transmeta Efficeon
VIA C7
VIA Nano

In practice 99% of the PCs that are running BOINC/Distributed computing projects.
What CPU's are meant?

AMD CPUs prior to Athlon 64, including all Socket A-based CPUs
Intel CPUs prior to Pentium 4
VIA C3
Transmeta Crusoe

I guess if someone has a CPU older than those in the list above by Dirk, the best advice is really to "Get a new computer!" :icon_lol: (My default answer for 2013 :icon_lol:)

hear, hear,

To all ye who art still workinge with 8086, 8088, 80286, 80386 or 80486 CPUs,
them Intel Pentiums with a number below 4 or AMD chips before ye trusted Athlon 64,
and ye who is still workinge with ye olde Motorola, IBM Power4 or lower, I would say

"Get a new computer!" http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qPJ_r1EhCKI/SyRbg5vaKaI/AAAAAAAAA3E/RyGBVlX9Rqc/s320/MCPCs_Pet-OldComputers_16-M.jpg

Goeth towarth ye olde compute shoppe and buyeth yerself something better and/or more efficient.

It was just a mere attempt at early modern English laddies, do not be offendeth.....

BTW: What happens/happened on September 19th?

AMDave

That's "International Talk Like a Pirate" day ... the day we say Arrrrr! all over the world. Since 1995,
http://www.talklikeapirateday.com
http://www.talklikeapirateday.org
http://www.yaaarrr.com
http://www.yarr.org.uk
http://www.facebook.com/InternationalTalkLikeAPirateDay
etc.

example: http://www.amdusers.com/forum/showthread.php?6044-Talk-like-a-Pirate-Day&highlight=talk+pirate

and "If you use Google, switch the language settings to "Pirate" for fun."
IIRC Facebook also has a Pirate language setting. (I don't partake in Fb)

Ye all needth a good CPU /a darn farm of them/ for coming challenge, as them GPU WUs are awfully short at the moment

AMDave
03-13-2013, 01:34 AM
yeah I noticed that too. a lot of waiting for GPU WUs.
I read that the new server arrived and everyone was hoping for relief from the WuGen shortage, but there was a problem with the RAID hardware or some such so it is still offline
Not good timing for the contest.
so I switched back to another project for now.
will do some poem later when server is fixed.

"Ye all needth" - lol

This contest is a bust for GPU.
1003 users - 1 unsent GPU work unit.

Just under 8 hours to go to the start of the Spring 2013 POEM Challenge
Not much time left for them to fix the GPU WU generation.
It's not going to happen.

In fact it seems to have degraded into a decomposition of the state of economics and government attitude towards investment in education & science.

don't feed the trolls!

Very disappointing.

@Dirk. I added some poetic responses for you. :icon_mrgreen:

We head the rhyming contest!
AMD Users - Rest of World: 5-0
If that's their best
We're king of the hill

So i noticed! If you can keep this up till the end off the challenge you might even pass AMDave
My own 2nd place in the all-time team stats lies under heavy fire from B Johansson, AMDave and you.
I feel forced to deploy my last resort weapon(s) of crunching....

AMDave

where's vaughan?
We're all going to sneak up on him. Shhh!

AMDave

The POEM challenge finished a while ago and we fared ok.
We moved up from 9th to 8th in the end stage.
At the end the team passed the 100 Mil milestone.
Team ranks 2,3 and 4 are now being hotly contested and we left a huge gap between 5th and 6th (almost 6 Mil and growing).
We are now within striking distance of the next team in the project.
2Mil to pass team Teddies then team Chanology will pass us so our team will maintain rank in POEM due to our push for the contest
http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=team&proj=poe&team=69#
(we are currently rank 48 so you'll have to scroll down)
so 10M is good for me and then back to WCG with Jason to duke it out for the top ranks. The plan is good. :)
If anyone wants to get a top-10 team rank fast while contributing to worthy Bio-science, then POEM is the project for you. ;)

where's vaughan? We're all going to sneak up on him. Shhh!

Why doesn't Vaughan push for his 25 Million Milestone? We promise to brake at 10 Million

AMDave
03-21-2013, 09:22 AM
What promise?
I didn't specify what I'd do after my next WCG target ;)

vaughan

Vaughan was working on Optima and Physics plus trying to improve in other projects. But ... now I know about AMD GPUs and Poem its time to try it again. I was just running Milkyway for AMD GPUs.
I keep dropping in World rank but have stabilized in recent days. Hope to improve as Winter bites and the heaters (I mean computers) can do their stuff. It was 5C here the other morning: yum.

Well, I'll promise to brake for children and animals, but I will continue driving too.

But I have as yet no intention of hitting the 25 Million mark in POEM.
Comes with a job and a HD 8990 perhaps

AMDave
03-21-2013, 02:51 PM
You are blasting your way toward it at almost 1 Mil / wk, nonetheless :icon_mrgreen:

Dirk Broer
03-21-2013, 05:38 PM
1 Mil / wk without job and on old/mid range hardware
10 Mil / wk with job and on new/high end, I promise....

This (http://boincstats.com/en/stats/58/user/detail/42271/bestxdays) is what I can do now at best, with better hardware more should be possible (If You can crank out 1 million a day (http://boincstats.com/en/stats/58/user/detail/2450/bestxdays), so can I with better hardware -read: high-end Radeons)

I wasn't able to keep all my hardware busy was part of the trouble. I still have one machine that the server refuses to give any gpu work to. I tried everything I can think of and this same machine runs HCC GPU fine at WCG. I tried to reset, detach, reattach and with and without app_config.xml file.

AMDave
03-22-2013, 04:48 AM
poem is not out of work according to the log files, but we are not getting any.
My caches just ran out altogether.
re-enabled some others to fill the gap

/edit - a few hours later project now saying 'has no work'

Updated the Stream SDK to 2.8 already?

Thanks for questioning my drivers. It seems my drivers were not being detected right by BOINC in Mint 13.1. I'm surprised WCG ran with no detection of openCL on the BOINC client. I removed the current AMD drivers and did system updates then rebooted. Going back to the default drivers from the additional drivers and everything seems decent now. I did have issues with output file absent for a few work units that seemed to resolve itself. It is now running 7 poem work units. Thanks again

We've passed the Teddies and are on our way to overtake #46: KIT- Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, which we may well reach before Chanology comes waltzing over us

POEM server is out of disk space.
Needs urgent admin attention.
May not get it until Monday morning.

There's plenty CPU work though

Kitties have been bagged, Chanology has found another goal, 46th place is ours (for the moment)!
