Bruce has started an AMD Users team at the Dimes Project. - Distributed Internet Measurement and Simulations.

http://www.netdimes.org/index.html

I found joining our team to be problematic. I hope my e-mail to the project admins gets it sorted out. I had to download the software, install it, create username and password, and give e-mail address. Then from the Home page attempt to login. This failed to recognise my password. Then I got them to re-send my password which was now different to the one I had chosen (go figure). Then I could login again and join our team (top of the list - way to go AMD Users).

ps. AMD Users is ranked #2 or #3 in this depending on the stats figure you measure by. We are beating Intel Users (sorry Beerknurd and Boosted Integra). Bruce is leading the charge with a well constructed World #4 rank. :hello1:

DIMES just started the teams feature not to long ago and will be releasing a new agent soon. The present agent doesn't allow the merging of stats for a user, in other words if bwhite installed DIMES on 4 computers 4 separate bwhites would show up in the stats. They are fixing this adding more features. DIMES uses very little bandwidth and almost no CPU time...does a traceroute about once a minute and maps the results. Others have had problems with emails/passwords as mentioned in their forums but thy have responded and tried to fix.

I have been running dimes for a while and changes are in the works. They respond to questions and try to fix. Now may be a good time to get in on this one as it is just starting for teams. AMD Users could us a little help...I see Free-DC has found the project in a big way

Even more than that...
We are currently working on user-groups, so that you can install multiple agents for the same user - just as some DIMES users proposed.
Anyway, we hope the next version will come out no later then April ( this year i hope... ) , we have some nice screenshots of the measurements in our forum.
enjoy :

Bandwidth usage is low. Uses Java so on my PC it is using 747MB RAM (I have 1 Gig). As Bruce says it sends "pings" so wus are tiny and thus CPU use is tiny. It just runs in the background.

Well I joined and it's running...... We'll see how it goes...

How often are stats updated?????

Ohad

our server sends ping and traceroute scripts which take about an hour or two to execute. it takes us a couple more minutes to update the stats.

i joined aswell, doesnt seem to go too well with SOB but soon i think i willo switch to CB and this for a bit.

ohad its good having almost uptodate statistics, especially with signing up as i was under AMD Users instantly so knew everything had worked.

seems to be running fairly well on this machine.

Guys,

I tried joining today. Got the same problems as Vaughan. I've emailed them. I'll wait for the response then join the one and only team.

I must have just gotten a slow k/n pair... cause now I'm back at about 3.2M and running dimes...

I can't get dimes to run on my P3 733 though... Not enough memory I guess... Plus SOB eats up most of it anyways....

Besides your catching up with me in Dimes......

he did say about multiple machines maybe that prolem was fixed.

Also if you run it stand alone with nothing using anyhting else it can do 2 a minute easily. I found this after re-booting before starting SOB again.

Beerknurd

Yea but I'm still trying to keep SOB going... So I can't let up any.... I'll just have to stick with second place.... I can't catch up with him anyways....

You overtook me and I started it before you, so you're doing something right. I have DIMES running 24/7 on 1 xp3200+

me 2 Vaughan, seems that possibly P4's like this project :? though with it being such low processor and internet usage seems a little odd.

Please welcome newcomer NeoGen to the Project, and with a whirl and a whoosh he is chomping his way into the world of DIMES! Go Getum NeoGen :blob3: :wav:

Thanks guys. :)

I actually was in Dimes already in the past with another nickname (NeoGen) but I lost the password for that one. So I registered a new user and am giving it another test run. It works real good on XP, I had tried it before on Vista64 but it didn't work.

My re-modeled 3800+ dual core to Opty 185 system died a slow and agonizing death. Motherboard burned out. On-board video was the first to die and took two weeks doing it. Had to let the room warm up before the monitor was visible. (I usually leave the heat off when I am away at work - my cat has a coat). Eventually it wouldn't warm up. Replaced the monitor first - no signal. Tried installing both a VGA and a DMI card - neither worked. Eventually it simply quit crunching. Replaced it with a Phenom II 925 system - Wanted to continue supporting the underdogs. In a few months I'll likely buy another motherboard for the Opty 185 to make a dedicated cruncher. Should be really cheap.

I loaded the programs and started it crunching last night, but somebody didn't think to turn off the default powersaver before they went nighty-nite... So any crunching results in Dimes won't show until tonight or tomorrow. Just wanted you to know that I hadn't left the party. Got me a nice 23" ASUS monitor go along with it. I consider this ordeal my own little Chinese economy stimulus package.

Ok, now I think I have this darn thing going. Initially set it up as a service, as recommended. Didn't run so removed from system and set up as an agent. Still didn't run - although in both instances my task manager said it was running. At least when set up as an agent I could see why it wasn't running. Norton's wasn't allowing incoming data from the pings/tracert. Had to manually tell Norton's that the Dimes application and java files were trusted. A bit of a pain in the tail, but as Norton's has more users with the Dimes application eventually it can become a Norton's-trusted application. Then it could be an automatic process. Anyhow, as of now the stats are showing up on my system and in a while I should be adding to the team's score again.

Steve this project updates every 2 hours or so and your points value is still zero. I think you need to access the program through Administrative Services and restart the program. Like Kick start it back into action! :blob3:

Steve Lux

Yeah, this thing is being a pain. The task manager shows that DIMES Agent 0.5.2 is running. Although I am often getting the "INFO Destination host didn't reply", I also sometimes get "INFO Received packet from (various URLs)".

I've always had trouble getting Dimes to run properly. Ah well, at least I have Einstein working well.

Seems Dimes Project has had a two day interruption in activity. And this time the website is down too. Dimes is based in Israel. I hope we don't lose another good project. :blob3:

Hi Nflight,

I am not sure I understand your question. The DIMES different servers (agent contact point and web server) were indeed up and down in the last week and a half. The main reason for this is a combination of a server hardware failure together with the introduction of a new RAID storage that required some re-configuration of our hardware and the reorganization of the location of DIMES data. We are now back to basic operations, and hopefully will be fully functional in a few days time.

Thank you for your continuous support,

Now the question is where are my Team Mates, we used to have a large score of willing crunchers on this project. Now only Blackadder and myself are crunching away. It is possible we will lose our glorious 8th position sometime in the near future if we don't start crunching this project.

Gentlemen lets Rock and Roll em.

I have this running as a service under my OS of Win XP. I hope there is opportunity to do this kind of crunching on Win 7 and 8 so my brethren can join myself and Blackadder. I am looking for some company folks! Please notice my stats below as the scores are posted daily, and there has been no hiccup in months with the project!

At the risk of sounding stupid: Why don't they make it a BOINC project?

And I would like to mention the presence of a certain Liuqyn that delivers credits for the team along with BlackAdder and you...

Well its been four days and the beloved project is down. I am not sure if I should attempt a direct conversation again or wait and see what happens in the next few days/weeks!

Where did everyone go? Beerknurd and Vaughan used to run this between them diligently now Nothing! :blob3:
