After eons of use and I am talking 9 years of keeping this system operating, and crunching I am going to upgrade! So the task at hand is how much do I have to spend? And how about some suggestions from my TEAM Mates on IDEAS ! Reasoning is because my XP system ends in 7 days!

Price Up To $1600.oo
Must HAVE: Microsoft OS - Possibly Win 7 Ultimate (suggestions here too)
Must have Microsoft Office suite - I use this selection of programs daily.

Let your ideas flow :blob3:

When you change from XP to something new you might as well think of a Linux Distro. In a few years them guys from Redmond will also pull support for Win7....
I have a good experience with Ubuntu/Lubuntu/Xubuntu, while e.g. Jason swears by Linux Mint with Cinnamon desktop.
One of the advantages is a better use of your CPU, if benchmarks are to be trusted.
One of the disadvantages is the non-support of MicroSoft Office -but all Linux distros have good alternatives for that.

If MS Office is a must have, then take Win7 or Win8. I'm pretty much impartial to which version, though Win8 gives me big troubles using both nVidia and AMD at the same time as of lately.
Then you are left with the choice whether to go for the FM2+ or AM3+ platform. Both will be supported by AMD for at least the next two years years. (http://www.amdusers.com/forum/showthread.php/9680-Latest-AMD-Roadmap)
As $1600 looks to me like a 'money is no objection', I'd go for a AM3+ mobo with at least three PCIe x16 slots and support for up to and including the latest 220 Watt TDP FX CPUs.
Asrock, Asus, Gigabyte and MSI all have boards that fit the bill and will cost around $140-$200 Euro over here (Euro~Dollar)
If you have a roomy casing, fit in a Corsair H100i closed-loop watercooling ($100) and a FX 8350 ($180). If you have a very roomy casing, think of adding a one, two or three R9 280X cards too, and use watercooling for them as well. Cost: entirely up to you.
Together with 32 GB of RAM ($150) -FX's do not particularly need high speed RAM, so 1600 MHz will do just as well- and a Samsung 840 Evo SSD ($100) you should be in for a major upgrade! (Use your old HDDs for storage).

I would choose Win 7 over Win 8. If you have to get Win 8 download one of the free Start button replacements so that it looks and works like Win 7 again. The native Win 8 or 8.1 interface is hopeless. I had to Google how to shutdown my new laptop as Win 8.1 was so counter-intuitive.

As for hardware, Dirk is your best man for info as I haven't purchased am AMD cpu since the days of the 1090T hex-cores.

If you have access to a tertiary education course eg doing a certificate of some kind here in Australia you are eligible for a Student discount price on MS Office. Not sure if MicroSoft offer similar deals in USA.

Same sort of deal here: when you are in education (whether giving or receiving) you can get Windows or MS Office for very friendly prices. Student licences only last a year nowadays though.

Win8.1 shouldn't give problems, once you spend a little time to learn the differences. I personally do not miss a 'start' button, being able to shut off the system by moving the mouse to the right side of the screen. My 'Win7' desktop appears when I click the desktop tile. I have no use for Metro Apps but -thanks to Jason- I can shut those full-screen suckers off (Alt-F4) when they appear. It helped having used all pre-release versions of Win8 though...

Yes the cost of of Win 7 and Microsoft Office Suite is gonna set me back $800.oo so only half the cost of a new system is actually hardware!

Dirk: now you know the rest of the story. I don't need a super duper GPU, as I would prefer less then the maximum. And yes I will be doing the same HDD to save $$$, plus maybe same PS since its still working as I sit here! I like cores, I like RAM, and I want to at least do Milkyway & other Math intensive projects with my GPU. I will need your wisdom Dirk to source the M/B and select the correct configuration to get me some serious boost in output from this new system, without going over the allotment of cash to make it all work!

Thanks in Advance Dirk, you are the man with great wisdom here on the Team, I know I have to right man for the job! :blob3:

Let me try to help you cut your software budget, so you can spend more on hardware:
From our affiliate Newegg: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit - OEM for $189.99 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116997); Windows 8.1 full version for $199.99 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832416711)
From our affiliate Walmart: Office 365 for $149 (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Microsoft-Office-365-Small-Business-Premium-Mac-Windows/30240556)

And you might be able to cut costs on hardware as well: over here -and probably soon over there with you too- GPU bitcoin/litecoin miners are dumping their hardware because it's no longer profitable with present energy prices.
I've seen Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD7 (http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3880#ov) boards offered -capable of running no less than six GPUs- for as little as 125 Euro, and that's including a Sempron 145. If they dump their GPUs and RAM as well (and no reason why they shouldn't) you might be able to score a HD 7950 and/or 32 GB of RAM at a reduced price too.

Hardware wise I'm not sure i would suggest keeping your current power supply if its been in the system for a long time. It is most likely inefficient and possibly not cut out for extra watts of a system with a nice GPU. Depending on the cost of your electricity an 80 plus gold or platinum may pay for itself in electric savings. (when crunching with a good GPU and CPU). I have recently built a system with a 9590 cpu and a 7870 gpu. I also have an 8350 with 7870s that is currently running linux mint 13 because windows 8.1 rebooted to much. If you don't mind a larger electric bill the 8350 would do some damage on your cpu projects. If your focus is GPU based you may lean more to the FM2 side of things. I like this for a starter kit (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1292364) and add a different main drive and use the seagate as a backup. This plus a video card and other extras may be over the budget if the software prices can't be found lower. The kit is a rough starting place with rebates and promo codes i'm sure we could get it down a bit more.

I'm not sure linux Mint is turning out to be all i hoped for, but I prefer the cinnamon desktop even though its not bug free yet. With your office environment needs windows 7 would be a decent choice unless your already using a windows 8 phone. I'm not sure you need windows 7 ultimate if windows 8.1 is an acceptable choice. I would probably get windows 7 professional to save a bit of money. I have been using Libre office for my needs, but it may fall short of your current needs.

I know I am not the Linux guru like I should be but with all you mentioned Jason1478963, I like your direction. I also like the complete product selection. What is missing is what type of GPU comes with the NewEgg combo bundle? I would prefer to be more then the on board video Processor I currently have but not to thirsty in the Electrons side of paying not too much for electricity but higher prices could be on the forefront soon!

Since my old dilapidated system still runs, I was hoping to use it while I got used to the Linux machine. The course being to acclimate myself to both types of systems and get used to using the Linux machine to run almost all of my operations in the business world that I need to keep in touch and collaborate with everyone else that is dealing with me at this time. :blob3:

Thanks Dirk, pat yourself on the back I really liked the different directions to go with looking for this new machine!

When you get the new machine up and running and have everything moved over, then taking the old machine to linux may be a good way to learn. That is how a started playing with Linux long ago.

The hardware selection isn't bad. I wouldn't get a seagate for my systems, but everybody has different preferences. The rosewill case will not support a corsair h100i in the top of the case if that is something you need. I did see a 7770 by MSI for 75 dollars after MIR this week. The card may depend on your order time/current deals/budget. I think its missing a dvd drive as well.

I don't need a DVD drive, not any more!

Thanks for the write up Jason, good to know I am not the only one about to find out how well Linux rules the web! I have a few more things happening at this moment so the funding for the new system will have to be later this month!

But I am still pushing to replace the one I have with a NewEgg variant, if not the same one you led me too! Thanks again for the heads up to all this stuff!

A (BluRay) DVD drive just takes up one 5.25'' drive bay and one SATA port and is not that expensive.
http://www.gadgetreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/samsungshb123-sg.jpg
When your system crashes it can be used for e.g. a Linux Live DVD to restore your system and/or data.
I am personally on the lookout for a SATA Floppy-drive to be able to use programs and/or data on my old floppy disks.
Once saw one that doubled as cardreader

Here it is 15 days later. I just got off the phone with my Computer Dude. He was adamant that I do not need a super fast GPU, SO I suggested this model: Fire Pro V9100 (http://www.amd.com/en-us/products/graphics/workstation/firepro-3d/9100#) He said I should have stock in my Electric company before I venture with that kind of horsepower! Maybe my Tech is right maybe I am looking in the wrong direction?

Honestly he is thinking more in the line of onboard GPU [Just found out they call it an APU now] rather then the external type. Which I really have not looked at, But I told him I want the FX-8350 and at least 8 Gig's of Ram per core - that part we understand and agreed on.

I went reading up on the CPU (http://techreport.com/review/23750/amd-fx-8350-processor-reviewed/12) At an offsite for a review and could not find what the on board reference of the GPU is? Anybody?

Oh and we are going to use an ASUS motherboard, my Tech's favorite choice in which they break the least remark matters! This is where an onboard GPU can be provided, so now which one is better. No it won;t have PCIe 3.0 as I noticed it is not a choice to select this option see this link: http://www.asus.com/motherboards/

More suggestions please !!! I am excited we are getting closer ... :blob3:

The AMD FirePro W9100 is the proffessional edition of the R9 290X, it is just much more expensive ($3,999) and has better double precision capabilty. Your tech is quite right.

An onboard GPU is called IGP (Internal Graphics Processor) and can be on the board as separate chip (the ancient S3 Virge Chip springs to mind), inside the chipset
http://www.legitreviews.com/images/reviews/1236/890gx_logo.jpg
AMD 890Gx chipset

or on the CPU (APU)
http://images17.newegg.com/is/image/newegg/19-113-359-TS?$S300$

There is one board that does PCIe 3.0 and will fit a FX 8350: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/SABERTOOTH_990FXGEN3_R20/. Some have it that Asus plays false and that internal speed is just PCIe 2.0 though. It will max out at 4 GB of RAM per core for an octacore though, having no support for 16 GB modules (You'd need 64GB in case of 8GB per core for a FX 8350).

You could follow the advice of your tech and buy a high-end FM2+ mobo, fit it with up to 32GB -for the time being, it will accept future 16GB modules-, a A10 7850K -it will accept future Carrizo APUs- and up to three R7 265 cards.

My thoughts are for crunching wise you need a good gpu with openCL coming to most projects. This will give you better numbers then any CPU could ever do. An AMD APU would be ok but that scratches the 8350 from the mix. I would get something like a 7770 or 7870 or the 7850 that was 105 dollars the other day. I'm still not sure what similar models are in the R series. I think for crunching you need 3 or 4 pci-e slots for future use as more projects move to GPU crunching.

Mentioned as a IGP = Integrated Graphic Processor , Just where in the ASUS Motherboard (http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/SABERTOOTH_990FXGEN3_R20/specifications/) designation does it mention this?

Jason and Dirk Thank You

I like the idea of an external 7870 GPU. But for now just seeing anything come up on my screen is better then nothing. I really do need the capability of the office software more then visually stunning video playback or gaming as I don't do either. I write so much now and research way too much now that my potential to crunch data is waning. I will do that some day in the future but right now my focus really is on securing my income future first then look to crunch with massive GPU arranged Servers. Double precision is critical...

Dirk I like the suggestions on the AMD/ASUS motherboard selections. They are very helpful and I will forward them onto my Techs Doorstep. Like I stated early this machine is more for office work then DCing. I have some better ideas but they are just ideas for when the income begins to roll in I will see about crunching more seriously. Good things come to those who can wait and never lose the passion !!

Nowhere, that mobo has a AMD 990FX chipset, that chipset has no IGP. The AMD 890GX was the last AMD chipset with an IGP, a Radeon HD 4290 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_AMD_chipsets#A-Link_Express_III).

Know also that the A10 APUs do feature double precision and are more than able to run MS Office (and together with one or more R7s can do a mean bit of crunching!).

I would get something like a 7770 or 7870 or the 7850 that was 105 dollars the other day. I'm still not sure what similar models are in the R series.
The HD 7770 had a Cape Verde GPU, the HD 7850 a Pitcairn Pro and the 7870 a Pitcairn XT.
The R7 260 performs a tiny bit better than a HD 7770 and a tiny bit worse than the HD 7850, the R9 270X performs a itsy meany tiny bit less than the HD 7870 and the R9 270 a bit less.
The R7 260X is more or less a revamped HD 7790, the R9 280 and 280X are to be compared with the HD 7950 and 7970

I am looking at a R9 270 for the GPU. I like the fact that I could not use the card at all and would only draw 7 watts. Maximum draw is only 170 Watts under extreme load and the continuous load says its less then 140 watts. IN relation to the older series #'s HD 7870's or 7850 series! Plus its under the $200 amount I could handle with the selection of the GPU. Thanks for the offer there Jason1478963 I do appreciate the offer.

Right now the selection is going with the FX-8350 and that is about all I have come down too! :blob3:

Quoting from this link (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-r9-270-review-benchmarks,3669.html): "I was surprised to find that the Radeon R9 270 is not an overclocked Radeon HD 7850, as I expected. Rather, it's essentially a Radeon HD 7870 with a 75 MHz-slower core, 200 MHz-faster GDDR5 memory, a 25 W-lower TDP, and a $180 price tag. " Nice package if I don't say so myself - more buck for the dollar invested!

Still looking at Mother Boards (http://benchmarkreviews.com/15453/asus-z97-deluxe-motherboard-hardware-review/), geez after while I will find what I am looking for though it has been a tremendous learning experience.

I am trying to get my Tech to allow me to purchase a bundle on NewEgg. But, he is pretty insistent I do it his way or its the highway for Me! Seems he is still telling me he is retired yet, he is working harder then ever! He just picked up 7 more clients in the first quarter of the year. He does business mainly, municipal governments is his specialty. I have known him since 1999, that makes our friendship long term and our minds similar in pathways of accomplishment.

There are not that many boards that are a good cruncher's choice for a FX 8350, I'd say..
The four tier 1 manufacturers of today (Asrock, Asus, Gigabyte and MSI) all have one or two boards that can be used for (future) multiple GPU crunching (and therefore need the AMD 990FX chipset (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_AMD_Chipsets#A-Link_Express_III)).
Outside of tier 1 there is just one offering, from Biostar.
Of these boards Asrock has the two most recent (as last it's 'Fatal1ty 990FX Killer (http://www.asrock.com/mb/amd/fatal1ty%20990fx%20killer/)' gaming board), but if I were to buy an Asrock AM3+ board it would be the even more feature-rich 990FX Extreme9 (http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/990FX%20Extreme9/)
All these boards max out at 32 Gb of RAM and PCIe 3.0 support is only brought by the the last Asus offering, the Asus Sabertooth 990FX/GEN3 R2.0 (https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/SABERTOOTH_990FXGEN3_R20/), top Asus board however being the Crosshair V Formula-Z (https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/CROSSHAIR_V_FORMULAZ/).
Their main competitors are the MSI 990FXA-GD80 (http://nl.msi.com/product/mb/990FXAGD80.html) and the Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD7 (http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3880#ov).
You might want to re-read my -by now slightly dated- AM3+ 990 FX mobo shoot-out (http://www.amdusers.com/forum/showthread.php/8703-AM3-990-FX-mobo-shoot-out) to decide which feature(s) matters to you most and what you'd want to drop, budget-wise.

I sent the order in this morning, about ten minutes ago... now with an additional 3 weeks of time to acquire the materials, assemble the configuration, and then transfer the data I should be raring to go. At least I will be able to go forward when a project comes on line, now i just hope the project lasts in Beta till I can reach 10,000 points. :( So disappointing old systems are.

Just last night we had sever T-storms, I shut the system off to prevent damage, It took nearly 12 tries to get the system to boot properly this morning. This scenario reminds me of hand cranking a tin lizzy, there is no starter using a key entry system, you have to work your brain to diagnose just why it isn't working like it was before you turned it off last night. Boot up freeze, repeat then fiddle with bios, reboot freeze, change bios back, reboot slow startup missing key icons in taskbar, reboot recover initiated, finally the light of day appears. Hi folks I am back.

I am really depressed that I am in the realm of Ranking of >8,000 + overall. I think with the new system I will be able to move back to the >5,000 pretty quick.

OH Jedi Master: The Triggle realm is fine with the projects that exist but anything else is going to see a rise in value! Yee Haw :blob3:

Real impressive list of Triggles though:

Well the new system came in last night. The first thing I did was I forgot to turn off Sleep & Hibernation, Oops!

Since this is a new system and it has a new OS, and many other feature's I am unused to the last few hours have been an eye opening amazement. I like that when I reboot the system is up in 4 secs, that's hard to get used too! The video responses and latency issues have completely changed my perspective of the internet. Since having difficulty for the last 6 months, I was so used to shortages in operating any web site. Now with quicker response times across the board the latency issues are gone. :blob3:

OK this was a bad day with a run in with an angry Business adviser. I somehow deserved some of the accusations but then it focused itself into a migraine. Now I have an odd problem and I need any ones assistance. I have counted repeatedly and it seems I have (9) CPU work units + (1) GPU work unit crunching at the same time! How can this be when I only have 8 cores? I know I have been working too hard but this is really stretching my imagination, could this be a hallucination while under duress or something. Sounds like a job for our experimental psychology expert. Any one, any one?

Which projects are running? Any of them nci (like e.g. WUProp)?

Nflight

I am crunching one GPU Collatz Conjecture Large work Unit at this moment, should be done in 3 weeks or so! I am then crunching Oproject with my CPU's. I think Oproject has a series of nci work units that only give out small amounts of points values called ALX's I think! :blob3:

Dirk Broer
06-25-2014, 01:10 PM
OProject is vci (very computing intensive). All WUs of any kind take longer when the Collatz WU hasn't been given a full CPU core while doing its OpenCL thing.
Without manual intervention, you should be able to crunch Collatz, eight OProject WUs plus a nci WUProp WU. Things wil gooooo ever sooo slooooow however.
My advise would be to reserve a CPU core for Collatz by adding this app_config.xml file to the Collatz project directory

<app_config>
<app>
<name>solo_collatz</name>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>1.0</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>1.0</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>

This will speed up both Collatz and OProject processing.

How do you insert this into a windows system?

Dirk Broer
06-25-2014, 06:42 PM
Using notepad to create the file, saving it as app_config.xml in

C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\boinc.thesonntags.co m_collatz

Nflight
06-26-2014, 08:43 PM
I did what you told me. Do I have to restart my system for it to take effect? Because I re started BOINC and it did nothing... :(

Dirk Broer
06-26-2014, 09:48 PM
In the event log it should at least mention the fact that it found the app_config.xml
Be sure to have boinc closed down before adding the app_config.xml to the project directory and indeed reboot to let it take effect

My MilkyWay project folder is :
C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\milkyway.cs.rpi.edu_ milkyway

I do *not* use a app_config.xml for my HD 4770, crunching MilkyWay.
Neither do I use one for the GT 630 that is running in my girlfriend's PC, nor the GTX 650 that runs my 2nd Ubuntu box -both times while crunching MilkyWay.

The tricky part could be the actually creating the file with notepad as you have to set it to all types on save and save it with the name app_config.xml
Notepad likes to make everything a txt file and windows likes to hide the file types usually.

I have recently found you can edit the file and with boinctasks tell boinc to read the file then there is no need to restart boinc. This comes in handy when running multiple cores on a project that doesn't checkpoint very often(WCG Clean energy 2).

Jason I think you mean using this program BOINC Tasks (http://www.efmer.eu/boinc/boinc_tasks/manual.html) Its best to read the manual before downloading the program. Will I have to load each project into this program. For some reason it does not say anything about this maneuver!

B I completed your install of the app_config.xml into the Milkyway folder. And Viola it works. Now I adjusted the usage parameters to 1.0 from 0.5 as I need the system to operate flawlessly with all the other stuff I am doing at the same time. Thank You Jason, I need to read more about BOINCTasks, that program has me intrigued. Yet I am not sure of all the details till I would download it and try it out. So there is always tomorrow. :blob3:

Great :) Adjusying levels is the key . Boinc task works fine i have been using it for years now.
It is perfect when you want too creat a app_config but the file int the right foler and you will get a message that tells you the right names.

I believe on your main machine setup should be simple. It communicates and gets your pojects and info similar to the way boinc manager does. It is very helpful when managing more machines and even ones with remote locations if the IP doesn't change very often.

Dirk Broer
06-29-2014, 03:34 PM
Nice tool to test your network security. It utterly fails to detect other BOINC crunching machines on my network (even when BOINC Tasks itself is also installed and active on other machines).

B Johansson

Have you created the two nessesary file wich has too bee in your boinc folder on every machine
gui_rpc_auth.cfg contains the boinc password
remote_hosts.cfg contains the ip of hosts that have right too access boinc

And have you scanned for computers in boinctask

Dirk Broer
06-29-2014, 10:29 PM
I have scanned for computers, using their IP-address (and address range).
The said *.cfg files were missing though...

B Johansson

Use notepad too create the files
use the same password on all machines makes it easy too manage

Here the link too the manual it explains the proccess

http://www.efmer.eu/boinc/boinc_tasks/manual.html

B Johansson
06-30-2014, 09:51 AM
Example of files

gui_rpc_auth.cfg save with this name
only the password

69eda0552bd85ff3dabfb9xxxxxx

remote_hosts.cfg save with this name

192.168.1.60
192.168.1.61
192.168.1.62
192.168.1.63
192.168.1.64

Thats all the information needed in the files

Basically you only need the app_config.xml files for those (sub)projects that use an OpenCL application.
You can best monitor the various project forums/fora to look for tips about the best settings per project.
Most projects leave out much lines, Bitcoin Utopia uses the most at the moment.

OK so how to do know what to put in the BOINC Tasks program to make it run, everything comes up with red letters which I am assuming means its not right yet?

Please copy your error messages in order to be able to help

I finally had a breather in time Dirk: Here is my syntax and it isnt' working, Jason or B you assistance could be useful as the Wow campaign is starting on Friday and I would like to get this to work by then!

Your syntax -which misses the second </app>- will only work with two GPUs, but then uses a full CPU core and a GPU per WU. Unless you are crunching with a heavy OpenCL application, that's not a savvy way.

Assuming -dangerous in ICT- that you have but one GPU but want to crunch two WUs at a time change it to:

<app_config>
<app>
<name>astropulse_v6</name>
<max_concurrent>2</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>.2</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>

You'd best use the optimized Lunatics driver, that comes with its own app_config, tailored to the capabilities of your CPU/GPU (look them up before/during the setup).

Dirk I found it, took numerous tries but I finally got one cpu and one GPU working for Seti

Let me explain my logic here in doing this Dirk. The old way of just letting it work with one GPU and 8 CPU work Units created a void where sometimes the GPU work units would last nearly 2 hours and 40 minutes. This was what I was seeing most of the time, some would actually fall in the realm of 30 or so minutes but most were very long. Then the App_config fix and walla I now have a surplus of ATI work units waiting to be added over to points as it now take no more then 20 minutes per ATI work unit and an average of 16 minutes for each one of them to be completed. Worth 93 points each makes for a happy cruncher! Too bad the work units waiting to be validated are getting cramped but they will start to fall in place and add numerous points to the competition. Woo Hoo :blob3:

I was talking to my Computer dude about a an upgrade to my GPU, should I wait to see what comes out this summer or go ahead and purchase (3) R9 290 X2's ?

You got big plans, GPU-wise?
Are they all three to go in one system?
Can your PSU take that much power?
Can the cooling take the rise in temperature?
Can your wallet take the KWh?

After six years I am refurbishing my existing computers needs like a new Power Supply, and I am replacing my existing 6 fans with replacements, all are less then optimal cooling effectiveness. I also got a new toy, a new GPU... so things are looking up to lasting another several years if needed.

140mm fans (https://premiumbuilds.com/case-fans/best-140mm-case-fans/) - You still can't go wrong with Noctua. Remember: bigger fans displace more air than smaller fans at the same rpm, and are quieter than smaller fans at the same rpm (rounds per minute).
700-750 Watt PSUs (https://levvvel.com/best-700w-750w-psu/) - Same with Corsair / Seasonic. Go for gold -at least. Try platinum or titanium certification if the budget allows it.

Agree with Dirk's advice. Cooling is very important. I always buy Noctua fans and recently their CPU coolers. Went thought a phase of buying Corsair Hydro series water coolers but had a disaster where one leaked after a few years of continuous usage. It took out 2 GTX970 GPUs and a motherboard. No water for me now :)

sorry to hear about the corsair leaking on your equipment. I have several of those and hope they don't fail taking out equipment like that. Where did it start leaking?

Radiator sprung a leak and it was at the top of the case so the fluid leaked over most everything.

I do appreciate the replies gentlemen. I have acquired a 1200 Watt PSU from Corsair, it is installed, I also got that GTX-1660 which is OC'd installed and working.. The fans are the problem, I was sourcing all fans from Best Buy but they did not fit and now I am dealing with NewEgg for my Noctua fans, I need the right connector fitting before I order them. Volume of air moving through to cool my system is critical. High volume of air is important for 4 fans, two take care of the water block on the CPU, and the other two need to push the air through the system to cool of my very hot VRAM dealing with Universe. Thank you gentlemen for all your insight...

Still under guarantee, but what could have caused it? No cooling water leakage, I hope?

on the topic of Noctua, i'm really not a fan of Noctua's 120mm cpu cooler fans (has a bit of an annoying hum). their 140mm fan is SUBLIME, tho.

if anyone else is building, would probably recommend keeping an eye out for dropping Zen 2 prices. usually, Zen 3 isn't the same % faster as Zen 2 is cheaper. i got a 3700X for $240 a couple weeks ago and missed out on the drop to $220, followed by $200 for a couple days, but now it's back to $220

me, i'm looking to put a 5700G in my daily driver (currently a 2400G + Tesla K40 for gaming). hopefully it helps gaming ever so slightly til i can afford a modern GPU... but also good for video encoding when it finally cools down. and maybe APU's GPU BOINCing

Which 120mm Noctua are you referring to? You may not believe me, but when I choose "Case fan, Noctua, 120mm" I get 32 hits (https://tweakers.net/ventilatoren/vergelijken/#filter:PY5BC8IwDIX_S84VHG5T-gMGO3jqUTzUNmikW0taRRz776YwPOXly3uPLHBjO_vRZ9CXU9N eFdD8Ri7mEZPBgK5QnEEXfqGCyB55IAweNCSmZ4YNmshFmM3uT xK6UXy7RkGydzT0RdDdXtWgwzNJqyxZbAOFgiwfLNAdjnVM9Qp t30vbZD-bXtf1Bw)...

A more international approach to the 32 variants here, including voltage, rpm, noise, air displacement and air pressure data (https://noctua.at/en/products/fan?size=2649)

You ought to be able to change the fan profile in the BIOS (quiet, performance, custom, etc.)
