I'm not really a newbie, I've been using BOINC for years, initially with SETI & Einstein, and was a member of NEGAS (North East Group of Astronomical Societies) until they disappeared, then BOINC UK for a couple of years, and now they've closed down their forum too, so I've switched to AMD Users, mainly because both of my main computers are AMD powered. My workhorse is an A8-3870K quad core on an A75M-ITX motherboard I shoehorned into an old Mac G4 tower case. It runs Linux Mint 18. I also use an older AMD dual-core for BOINC work, and that one has a HD6670 graphics card in it and is running Linux Mint 17.1. I was an Atari STe man for many years, and reluctantly switched to Mac OS9 when the Atari couldn't keep up with Internet stuff, then likewise to Linux when the Mac couldn't. I still use a Mac G4 OS9 machine for games & email, but little else. I have an STe permanently wired up to my TV for occasional games too. However, my current favourite is running the Linux SuperTux2 platform arcade game. I just love the old style 2D side-scrollers.
