Ordered one of these puppies today, along with an Asus Sabertooth X99 MB, solid state drive and a case. a little steep but anxious to see how it goes. Win 7-64 Pro. they ordered the parts this afternoon and I'm having them stick it together as I would hate to screw it up.... lol they can deal with the DOA stuff if any.
What cooling solution are you going to use with it?
When you go over to the dark side, what about next year a i7-6950X? That's 20 threads running.
Wait: make that a Intel Xeon E5-2699-v3, the board supports it! (but your wallet doesn't...), 18 cores, 36 threads running.....
Damn Dirk! :-) Don't go getting sensible on me..... :-) Proly a Corsair H110. Gotta call the shop today. To be honest, it slipped my mind as well as the shop guy. Forgot those don't come with coolers. As for the 18 core Xeon, ya.... that $3,9xx.xx is a bit of a jolt to the wallet. :-) Will just have to see what comes down the road in the future. I guess I could always quit dreaming about a flashy new set of wheels! Lol. Do you have any suggestions on something other than an H110?
Edit: As for waiting for the next great thing in processors, one could die just waiting for the greatest thing. And no matter what you get, they will come out with something else after you buy it. It's just a game they play to extract and squeeze all they can out of you. :-)
Edit2: Yup, gonna be a HT110. And then whatever case is gonna fit it all... I'd originally gone with an Antec One Gaming case, but don't thing that's gonna fit anymore. Don't know how that slipped all our minds yesterday... lol. Oh well, like the bumper stickers say "Shit Happens".

The i7-5960X is a beast of a (consumer) CPU: 8 cores, 16 threads, 20 MB of L3 Cache, 40 PCI Express lanes and support for 8 DIMMS of DDR4 RAM -but at the expense of a 140 Watt TDP
(which is quite respectable, considering the eight cores).
You might want to change your CPU in the future for the Xeon E5-2648L v3, a 75 Watt TDP CPU with 12 cores, 24 threads, 30 MB of L3 cache, 40 PCI Express lanes and a max of 768 GB RAM -provided your motherboard will take the CPU and the needed ECC RAM, you'll need eight 96 GB DIMMS to get to 768 GB (and a small fortune).

Wellllllll....... As the saying goes there's no free lunch. If there's much output there's gonna be heat. Today I farted around and stuffed a GTX970 in a system and have it running off some work units from asteroids@home. Takes roughly a half hour to process one. I don't know yet whar kind of credit will be granted them. Hopefully it's more than the 480 from the cpu ones. Otherwise it won't be worthwhile to grind them out from the gpu compared to what the octocore can put out in 24hours. Will see.
That 32 core puppy will be a pricey little devil. lol
edit: Well the gpu workunits get the same credit as the cpu. So the reality is that it's pretty much a wash, either the GTX-970 or the octocore 5960X.
And those 32 cores are said to deliver 64 threads...Imagine a mobo holding four of those puppys....:5obsessed:Quote:

From CERN - The 32 cores and eight-channel DDR4 memory interface are about double what Intel offers now in its high-end Xeon processors, and the move to 14nm will put it on par with Intel. Currently, AMD's server chips are built on a 28nm manufacturing process.

The real progress is in the server and enthusiast user groups, the question is e.g. whether a two-core Zen chip needs eight-channel RAM. Sixteen RAM slots do not fit an iTX board either.

And I hope you can start with just one CPU on that board, later adding more as budget permits. A dual setup is only 280 Watt (TDP) and still 128 threads.
BTW: 8-channel RAM means each CPU/Mobo ought to have at least 8 RAM DIMMS...Socket 1366 Nehalem had six RAM slots for triple channel RAM, Socket 2011 eight RAM slots for quad channel, remember? So expect sixteen RAM slots per Zen-Opteron, that's 64(!) RAM slots to fill for a quad Zen-Mobo.....
560 Watt (TDP) for 256 threads is slightly more than 2 Watts (TDP) per thread. I think a quad Zen is cheaper to run than a 'classic' farm:
560 Watt can easily be reached with some 125 Watt FX CPUs, 95 Watt FX CPUs, 100 Watt APUs or 65 Watt APUs.

Well I sorta am inclined to think that I won't be purchasing any more high wattage systems. I'm currently more into smaller sized stuff so that I can move it easily between Oregon and Washington. The NUC works out really well for me in that regard, and I will be picking up one of the latest releases shortly. I see on your list you have a raspberry 3. :-) That should be a fun one. Been playing with Chrome on the compute stick, it works well and I'm impressed with it. :-)
Sigh..... It is warming up here and thus the heat output of the i7-5960x is quite apparent. Here I thought that it would be a good system for OGR which it is however it really puts out some heat even water-cooled. More than I had expected. On the other hand I picked up a couple nvidia 970's and was quite surprised at how cool they run for their output on rc5. They do good too on collatz. So I'm thinking of picking up a couple more and retiring my older amd gpu's to help keep my heat issues down. I know, I know, I'm being a traitor to the cause but I've gotta do something about the heat.
Your No traitor as I mentioned months ago I too am looking to vacate the premise of AMD GPU's and go completely NVidia. I have been reporting on Our Team's Facebook page about Nvidia showing great results for the higher end GPU products including one that only puts out 50 watts tdp.

Problem with the 8-core i7-5960X remains the 140 Watt TDP that need to be addressed/disposed of. It is even higher than the hungry version of the AMD FX (125 Watt), but the i7-5960x has double the threads. The two turbo FX CPUs (FX-9370 and 9590) are even worse, heat-wise: 220 Watt...
But the 16 threads on optimal mode sure crunch through those OGR work units nicely. The other problem is the dnetc apps are pretty well optimized to extract about all that can be sucked out of the cpu/gpu's and that really gets them warmed up. I don't noticed the generated heat out of the boinc projects like collatz, asteroids, nfs to the same degree as the dnetc stuff. So one might say why keep crunching dnetc, however I've been crunching them for years and years and I like those projects...... So I guess it's just keep living with the heat. lol
