8. Charity-Crunchen 2016

Dear members of Team AMD Users,

SETI.Germany and Team LAF organize the Charity Event 2016. It takes place from 01/17/2016 at 00.00 until 01/30/2016 at 23.59. ( 16/01/2016 22.00 UTC - 30/01/2016 21.59 UTC )
This year we will be provided for the project POEM @ Home.
Team change:
Shortly before the change of their core team participants in the charity team: http://boinc.fzk.de/poem/team_display.php?teamid=863, and expect from the 01/17/2016, at 00.00 clock for the project POEM @ Home. Participation is voluntary.

In the project settings, it is easiest if all available WU-types are allowed.

SETI.Germany and Team LAF invite all BOINC teams to participate.Everyone is welcome to join in the Event.

Decided to give it a go, POEM-wise, and jumped from 5th place (AMD Users) to 4th (Charity Team), only to drop to an 11th position a day later. Fierce competition...
I'll be back on the first of February!

So what is the name of the platform I crunch with? Windows PC didn't work.

Poem ought to work under Windows, Linux and OS X with the applications POEM Protein Folding and POEM++ (the latter 64-bit Linux and OS X only) and With Ati/AMD OpenCL 2.0 capable GPUs the application POEM++ OpenCL version under Windows and 64-bit Linux.

At this moment only POEM++ is available

It's note a race in the usual way, it is a charity event meant to give the POEM score a boost. The netto result is given in a -specially made team- score,
so it is not teams against each other, but with each other under a new flag.

Too difficult for me; I'll concentrate my efforts on SRBase. My two 24 core (48 thread) Xeons are powering through the tasks.
Hot spell here 35-40C only drops to 24C at night so the air conditioner is taking a beating. This afternoon I paused all crunchers for a few hours to let the a/c back off a bit.

Some hefty Intel systems around here at AMD Users, as AMD is still busy bringing us much needed ZEN.

An AMD system with 48 threads would need a quad Opteron G34 mobo (e.g. SuperMicro) and either

• four 12-core "Magny Cours" -K10 based- Opteron 6100 series, maxing out at 2500 MHz with the Opteron 6180 SE, but still having complete cores instead of modules,
• four 12-core "Bulldozer" based Opteron 6200 series -maxing out at 2900 MHz for the Opteron 6238 (full load Turbo)- or
• four 12-core "Piledriver" based Opteron 6300 series -maxing out at 3100 MHz for the Opteron 6348 (full load Turbo).

One can only hope that Zen will give us more cores AND more performance than Xeon, but them from the blue camp have an incredible 18-core (36 threads on one CPU!) as being the model to beat...

Will AMD also have a YIN APU (FM2+ or FM3 platform) and YANG SOC (AM1 or AM1+ platform) for us?

I am looking to build another BOINC rig, and was actually looking into dual socket boards, though I only planned on having 24 physical cores. Right now I am split between 24 CPU cores, or 8 CPU cores (at 5+GHz) with quad GPUs (making it more of a 5-6 CPU core unit as far as the projects are concerned). The biggest thing holding me back from the 24 cores is that it would be strictly CEP2, and I can't even imagine the I/O I would need for that.

WCG has more active sub-projects besides CEP2....You could contribute in research into Cancer (MCM), Ebola (OET), the Genome (UGM) and Aids (FAAH2).

AMD-wise you're left with dual Socket G34 mobo's with the same 12-core CPU's I mentioned a few messages ago in this same thread (though you could choose for a quad socket mobo and use four 6-core CPU's), Intel-wise you need a Socket 2011-3 mobo with Intel C612 chipset, like the Asus Z10PE-D16 WS. I can't imagine this mobo failing the I/O needs of CEP2. I would love to see a likewise equipped AMD Zen-Board....

My heavy crunchers are the following from Intel:

Two of these:
E5-2692v2 cpu (ES/OEM model). 12 core 2 ghz turbo up to 2.4
Supermicro x9drd-7ln4f motherboard. Its a dual socket so the boxes actually have 24 cores (48 hyperthreaded)

One other machine is based on an E3-1275v3.
