I have some spare parts that need putting together and am considering building a P4 system to run SOB.
I have:
Metal case with Seventeam ST-250BLV 250W p/s
FDD
Lite-on LTR-48246S CD-RW drive
Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 ST380013AS 80Gb SATA HDD
Seitec 2x 256 MB DDR333 RAM CL2.5
Leadtek Nvidia MX440 graphics card
Linux Mandrake 10 and Windows XP Pro
I need:
CPU
HSF
Motherboard including LAN (else wi-fi g card)
case fan
Any advice on what to get?

thanks for the PM. This question got me thinking for a while. Tell me how does this grab you?
Get a sempron and M/b with an upgrade path and put it on a project that your Intel is running, then switch your old Intel to SoB. That way you win because you spend less (semprons still outperforming Intell $ for $) and the team wins because you have another CPU on the job, and AMD wins because we have another task muncher in the field :D . Then later on if you want more grunt you can move the CPU up a notch or two. Check the pin-outs and you will find the one that I mean...(Ref: APC magazine, Jan 2005).

True. Semprons are SSE2 enabled.
The new Sempron 3100 will be socket 754, so upgradeability may be limited unless they continue to make faster Socket A solutions.
I've been considering the Mobile 3000 or 2600 myself. It wont be too swift on SOB or Ubero, but on everything else it will rule Intel.
Plus, it will run cooler and use less power. I have a couple 200-250 watt psus to use up too.

looks a gd motherbord taking dual channel memory, sata etc. a good buy for the price.
Eeeek ................ Prescotts run super hot and dont oc like the Northwoods. I had a thread going about it before , but I see it must have been lost.
Northwoods are scarce and more expensive.

I have two Intel boards myself :roll:
amd is quicker better faster. amd rules. i would go for a 2800 amd 64 they are cheap and give you all the power you need and a good upgrade if you want to later.
They don't in SOB - that is the specific purpose Vaughan bought this CPU for - nothing else. Even my A64-3500 dawdles at SOB. As Boosted Integra says "Intel P4's rule" (... in Seventeen or Bust.)
And in all other projects too.......:? :lol:
Now what you really need is the new Opterons that support SSE3
