    dell boot problems

On a Dell Dimension 8100 (Bios updated to version xp) I can boot up and install windows XP professional (original version). If I try and boot up Windows XP Pro with SP2 then the system blue screens as soon as the cd starts up windows.

    error is STOP 0x0000007f (0x00000008, 0x80042000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000).

    I have tried
    1 replacement (new) hard drive
    2 different CD rom
    3 replaced memory
    4 replaced CD rom drive
5 all other devices are removed from motherboard (ie sound card, modem
    etc)

If I install the original windows xp professional this is fine. If I upgrade it using windows updates to sp2 then this blue screens on startup.

I found this in the microsoft website about that stop error...

    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=137539&sd=RMVP

I had a similar problem trying to install Windows XP on an older computer some years ago, but I can't remember if it is the same problem you're having. To me it was related to the computer being older and not complying with ACPI and all that, so there was this workaround at install time that one had to do. Read the following thread I found about it

    http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1014234292

    (Quoting...)
"If the OS isnt installed, and you're installing it, as soon as you enter into the
setup, it will say at the bottom of the blue screen, "Press F6 to install Raid or
Scsi" or something like that, when it says that press F5."

Tried both of those ideas - still got problem

    Thanks for the reply.
I found the F5 work around and previously tried it - this seemed to be a problem on HP machines.

I have had this problem for nearly 2 weeks now and am really pulling my hair out.

I can boot up other CDs and install operating systems such as
    a) windows 2000 professional
    b) windows XP professional 2002 (ie no service packs)

but both windows XP home and professional with SP2 give me the BSOD.

As the machine is a Dell the bios changes are very limited.

THe only idea I have at the moment is to use another Intel P4 platform to install the software and then see if it will run in the DELL.

I am surprised that I cannot find other DELL 8100 users with the same problem.
