New Windows BOINC Dev. Version - 4.40

    Development version
File (click to download) boinc_4.40_windows_intelx86.exe (6.29 MB)
    Version number 4.40
    Release date 12 May 2005
    Installer type Windows installer
MD5 checksum of download file 1fd805c7626b1f35b4d5acca9b7913fd
    New features

    * A new scheduler has been written for the client-side application so the client can be attached to many more without missing deadlines.
    * Fixes a bug in which Intellisense/Intellipoint closes applications while in screensaver mode.
    * Fixes bugs with managed deployments with Active Directory.
    * A new 'Select Computer' dialog remembers which computers you have connected to.
    * A new statistics tab has been added to the BOINC manager (thanks to Jens Breitbart for the great feature).
    * Support for UMTS networks.
    * Numerious usability fixes.
    * Fixed connectivity problems on all platforms.
    * Support for account management websites.
    * Password protection for GUI access.
    * BOINC Manager now sports a new button based interface which replaces the html based interface in previous versions.
    * BOINC Manager now is built with wxWidgets 2.6.0
    * Symbol files (*.pdb) have been removed from the installer to help out those on dialup connections. We were not receiving very many, if any crashes in the last few months. We'll make the symbol files available as a seperate download.

    Known issues

    * Applications that were built before October 2004 do not display screensaver graphics with the Service or Shared install type, or the Single-user install type with the password protect screensaver option on NT based machines.
    * If BOINC runs at the same time as Windows XP 3D screensavers, the system becomes sluggish and unresponsive.
    * Same issues for dialup users as 4.25.
    * Same issues for ATI graphics cards as 4.25.

Before I wasn't able to get any of the graphics to work on my ATI machines but putting on Windows XP x64 seemed to fix that.

I've been getting "Connection failed" messages sometimes in the last few dev versions, whenever I open the boinc manager...
Then the manager just lays there completely empty and boinc is running in the background like if it was running like a service.
And I can only close boinc by going to the task manager and killing the process tree, because even if I close the boinc manager, boinc itself keeps running behind the stage :?

Having a problem, it doesn't let me update the version. I can open up the installer fine, but when it starts to install, it says this: http://img185.echo.cx/img185/9738/untitled10ku.png

Full link for where it looks for boinc.msi: C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations\{DEE77CAF-06F0-4A95-B87A-7F13A7FEF048}\

The file is there, but it can't seem to read it. I even tried to copy it to desktop, but it still says it can't read it.

    Any solutions?

Ouch.... I had that problem too sometime ago. It wouldn't let me install no matter what I did. I had to reinstall the exact version I had again (thankfully it was 4.25, and it was still online), then uninstall it, and then install the new one.

Not trying to brag but I haven't ever had any problems with BOINC at all. I know some of the other members don't think much of it though. Maybe I have just been lucky with it.

    That is great Keith!
I like boinc too, but I stretch it to the maximum... install/uninstall/erase stable/beta boinc versions up and down... sometimes lose work (like for climate prediction twice already...) etc...

Speaking of which... this new dev version 4.40 has a serious memory leak... sometimes when it's uploading or downloading files the cpu usage of the boinc.exe file jumps to near 100% and it's memory usage grows about one megabyte per second indefinetly... Have to close and reopen boinc for it to stabilize again.

I've noticed when I double click on the icon in the task bar to bring the window, its almost always frozen, it takes a few secs before the window becomes functional.

Anyone else have any problems like this. I'm plagued with BOINC probs But I still like it.

Can't say I have noticed that. I have noticed though that all most of my machines running any version of BOINC that is sometimes takes a few seconds for the icon to dissapear after I tell it to exit. On my machine running XP x64 though it is instant.
