Building an AMD-based 32 thread cruncher

As 24-thread have been around since Socket F, lets take it a level further still: the 32 thread cruncher.

    Socket F:

    1. Buy an octa Socket F mobo and eight four-core Opteron 8300 HE-series "Barcelona" or "Shanghai" (that's 8 x 79 = 632 Watt TDP in one case/rack tray!)
    2. Buy an octa Socket F mobo and eight four-core Opteron 8400-series "Istanbul" of 60-79 watt each

    Socket G34:

    1. Buy a quad Socket G34 mobo and four 8-core Opteron 6100 HE-series "Magny-Cours" of 85 Watt TDP
    2. Buy a quad Socket G34 mobo and four 8-core Opteron 6200-series "Interlagos" of 115 Watt TDP
    3. Buy a quad Socket G34 mobo and four 8-core Opteron 6300-series "Abu Dhabi" of 115 Watt TDP
    4. Buy a dual Socket G34 mobo and two 16-core Opteron 6200 HE-series "Interlagos" of 85 Watt
    5. Buy a dual Socket G34 mobo and two 16-core Opteron 6300 HE-series "Abu Dhabi" of 85 Watt

Options 4 and 5 seem the most economical, to me that is.

    Socket TR4:

    1. Take any TR4 mobo and buy a 16-core Ryzen Threadripper 1950X.

Perhaps the most easily obtainable solution.

    Socket SP3:

    1. Take any SP3 mobo and buy a 16-core EPYC 7351P. [recommended]
    2. Take any dual SP3 mobo and buy two 8-core EPYC 7251.

An advantage of EPYC against Threadripper is the lower TDP and the even higher amount of PCIe lanes, a disadvantage is the fact that the octa-channel RAM dictates that you have to buy the RAM in quantities of at least eight sticks at a time, but this might be a blessing in disguise -crunching-wise. The single socket option gives you the opportunity to make your cruncher a 64-thread cruncher in time, the dual mobo even gives the opportunity to make a 128 thread cruncher, now. In the future, when the 64 core/128 thread AMD Starship comes out, the dual mobo can house 256 threads....latest rumours have that it will be a slightly different Socket SP3, unfortunately.

A new possibility comes available later this year for Socket AM4: The Ryzen 9 3950X (105 Watt TDP) will have 16 cores and 32 threads.
In theory this means that any AM4 system can be upgraded to a 16-core/32-thread cruncher, in practice this will need at least a BIOS upgrade and perhaps not all chipsets/mobo's may be able to offer all possibilities of the new CPUs. Check the CPU-support page of your mobo! -and watch those BIOS updates: what do they offer?
