Building an AMD-based 48 thread cruncher
As I am getting all fired-up in this thread about threads I'll jump right to the next level: the 48 thread cruncher! Now we're getting somewhere...
Can it be done using ye olde Socket F?
- Buy a octa Socket F mobo and eight six-core Opteron 8419 EE of 60 watt TDP (still 8 x 60 = 480 Watt to dispose of)
There are other six-core Socket F Opteron 8400-series "Istanbul" CPUs capable of being placed into a Socket F mobo, but their TDP is higher still (Opteron 8425 HE: 79 Watt, up to Opteron 8439 SE: 137 Watt. You simply do not want to have to dispose of 8 x 137 = 1096 Watt of heat, or you must have liquid Helium lying around doing nothing.)
Socket G34:
- Buy a quad Socket G34 mobo and four twelve-core Opteron 6100 HE-series "Magny-Cours" of 85 Watt TDP
- Buy a quad Socket G34 mobo and four twelve-core Opteron 6230 HE "Interlagos" of 85 Watt TDP
- Buy a quad Socket G34 mobo and four twelve-core Opteron 6300-series "Abu Dhabi" of 99-115 Watt TDP
Socket SP3
- Buy a Socket SP3 mobo and a EPYC 7401P of 170 watt TDP [recommended]
