Australians have things a little differently to other people. Instead of driving on the right-hand side of the road (USA) we drive on the left. Instead of having tea and shortbread at four o'clock (generally the UK) we have tea or coffee with lamingtons. Instead of having to cook a three-course meal at a social gathering, or even a party, we just get some bread and sauce, and chuck a few snags on the barbie.
It's a great way to socialise, especially when two or more of the blokes know how to cook the snags. (Yes, it is generally the guys who cook them.) You can hold this sort of party for as long as you like and as many times as you like, and Aussies will never get bored of it. However, one must also take into consideration the fact that sausages and bread alone can't realy keep all Australians occupied for that long. In your kit of barbie, snags, bread and sauce, you also need:
A bunch of hamburgers... and extra bread
Onions
Deckchairs
A cricket bat, cricket wickets (or a couple of Jolly Green Giants) and a tennis ball
Barbecue tools... like tongs and a spatula
For the intellectual crowd, a book of quizzes or a boardgame... just in case it rains or gets dark
Optional: Music that everybody loves
Some M&Ms, Jaffas, chips or other munchies to sustain you while the snags are cooking
For Australia Day, some Australian Memorabilia like little flags or koala badges
An Esky full of beer, plus a few less adult beverages
Anytime, anywhere, anyplace. I went to a cricket training session not long ago. I came off the field tired and wanting to go home. Then I smelled that familiar smell of almost-black snags and I was perked up immediately. Quite fun, quite enjoyable, quite tasty.
