greetings all... Im new here. Just downloaded the BOINC client tonight and joined my first projects. Have been poking around in the forums a little bit and have a few questions..

    1. There are a lot of different projects going on. Are there any that the "team" is focused on? Since part of the fun in this is the competition aspect, I want to contribute where I can! I have joined Predictor, Einstien and LHC ( although LHC doesnt seem to want to send me anything at the moment).

    2. My machine is nothing spectacular. I am running an AMD XP 2800+ with 1Gig memory. I know there are ways to overclock systems, but I have zero experience doing so... is it somthing that a novice can experiment with safely?

    3. Are there any other suggestions you all might be able to share with me to optimize my performance?

thanks a ton for any feedback or ideas you might be able to share!

Welcome to the Team Kromwell :D

If you've just started with Distributed Computing... then you're in for a ride! Our Team participates in about 50 projects already, and each is unique in its own way. If you like adventure and to experiment, you can register at almost all and try them out.

To answer your questions now... well about the projects it's a bit volatile. Right now Predictor is coming up strong, and we're ranked 34th. We're aiming to get to the top-20, so all help is welcome. LHC@Home only has work to hand out every few weeks. They hand out a batch of work, receive all the results, and make a pause to process them. Then the cycle starts again with another batch of work. You just happened to start it now that is in the pause stage. Einstein is by far the most popular project among our Team, with hundreds of members participating in it. Workunits are a bit longer, but you get the deserved credits. And it has a pretty cool screensaver

About the overclocking... If you can access the BIOS, you should be able to increase the Front Side Bus Mhz value. That's a pretty basic overclocking that almost anyone can do. But do it in very small steps and test the stability of the machine after each step up. When it becomes unstable, it's because you can't go so far. For a better explanation, you should create a thread on the overclocking section. That's where our members who understand more of these things are most likely to be watching.

About optimizing performance... have you tried an optimized boinc client? See here:

Also, if you like quick games, try our Arcade. Some games are pretty addicting. Proof of that is the high scores being so high already

This guy joined our team 8/10-2005 and has been doing very, very god. He have crawled 255.369.658 url`s since he joined. Right now he have crawled 540.000 url`s. I can’t think we should have 2 different peoples as have the nickname Peyoti.
Can it be possible 2 peoples have choose same nickname? I think the chance for that it is 1 of 1.000.000.
However, I don’t know if he are running another project than Majestic-12.

    Hi Kromwell :n00b:

Welcome and thank you for joining us. Your AMD is not so bad for Boinc project. The fact is AMD´s computer is doing better than Intel in many project.
In D2OL for example the Sempron is the king when it comes to the costs and also performance which not is too bad.

I´m surprised and glad you have so many good questions and in this forums we have some experts.

Also, as a newbie you have joined 3 projects which is more than i did the first time I joined a project but my computer that time was an Intel PII 350 Mhz, 640 Mb ram

This computer is still alive and run HashClash and Leiden Classical as is well suited for this old computer from 1999. You can read obout these projects in our forums and get more knowledge about it.
