Smoked PC :(

NEVER EVER EVER consider buying an Asus S-Presso barebones PC.

Within 6 months the HDD was cooked due to in-adequate cooling. I then leant the PC to a friend who had blown his CPU, and he told me last week it wasn't booting. I bought it home and checked the HDD out on my other PC, which was fine. I then plugged it in to boot and a got the magic smoke. One of the transistors on the mobo has fried so it's going in the trash!



I will of course strip it down, but the CPU may be dead too.

The part which popped is a "APM2014N" so I might be able to scrounge one from another mobo. Fingers crossed!

I thought about buying one of those, but was concerned about cooling in such a small boxen ... and it looks like I was right.

Dont'cha know all electronics and electrical devices run on magical smoke. When you let the smoke out of them they quit.

Need to keep looking on the board though. Usually when something blows, it's cause there's something that caused it. So it's highly likely that there is another issue on the M/B that caused the blow.

I think I've found the source of the problem. One of the fan 5v wires got trapped and ended shorting on the chassis. The case then drew a huge amount of current which burnt this transistor.

Problem is I can't find a vendor (Digikey, Newark etc...) that carries this part.

If anyone's bored, it's an APM2014N...

Those sites scare me, they look like they tender a bid from suppliers and take a commission. I'd rather use a company like Digikey or Newark.

I don't know anything about these companies, but the component you want is at least available.
