Essentially, Sempron is a faster / more efficient XP processor using the newer cores. It is still a 32 bit machine... but is now in between the Athlon 64 class and the Athlon XP class in efficiency and performance. In a nutshell, it's the last of the 32 bit-only machines to be built for a while... and runs in the 754 pin boards (which, while supporting the initial Athlon 64's, could not really run best in 64 bit mode until put on a 939 or 940 pin board)...... whereas the Sempron is a drop in for the 754 board and makes the most of it.

Here is a clip from the AMD web site:

Q: How do the new AMD Sempron processors compare with AMD Athlon 64 processors?

A: AMD Sempron processors are tailored to the growing segment of value-conscious PC users seeking a full-featured product with best-in-class performance for the changing face of everyday computing. AMD Athlon 64 processors and Mobile AMD Athlon 64 processors are designed to meet high-performance computing needs by providing outstanding 32-bit performance, capability for tomorrow’s 64-bit applications, and Enhanced Virus Protection in conjunction with the upcoming Windows® XP Service Pack 2.

Q: Will the AMD Sempron processor work with any 64-bit OS?

A: The AMD Sempron processor is an entry-level processor for everyday computing needs. Newer technology such as 64-bit operating systems are targeted for higher performance needs such as CAD, audio and video editing, large database applications, high-end consumer games, and other high-performance applications. For these uses, we recommend purchasing an AMD Athlon 64 processor, AMD Athlon 64 FX processor, or an AMD Opteron processor-based system.

Q: What model numbers and frequencies will be available for this new product line?

A: The AMD Sempron processor will be available for the desktop in model numbers 2200+, 2300+, 2400+, 2500+, 2600+, 2800+ and 3100+. Model number 3000+ will be available from AMD in Q4.

    Frequency for the desktop model numbers are 3100+ = 1.8GHz, 2800+ = 2.0GHz, 2600+ = 1.833 GHz, 2500+ = 1.750 GHz, 2400+ = 1.667 GHz, 2300+ 1.583 GHz, and 2200+ 1.5 GHz.

So, how does this compare to your Intel... It will simple 'clean it's clock' easier.
