Cable in Pa... (Prolog) is still 1500/128, but moving to 3000/256 in metro areas (like I had in D/FW 3 years ago).

DSL is the most reliable for us in Pa because a) 1/2 mile from the telco switch central office .... b) Prolog cable goes out, even though only 5 miles away, all the time and is the only provider c) the cable modems we must use (cannot purchase own) SUCK... the bandwidth is limited to 768kb/128kb or 1500/128 .... no choice... all based on line quality / signal strength at your house...... SUPER SHITTY... (they have more repeaters and re-amplifiers than anything i have ever seen before in my life.

Back to the DSL...., the 'stock issue' DSL modems contain firewall, VPN, and other MANY other features (like DMZ, default host to route to, etc) that saves money.... the DSL modem is provided by the telco, and runs at 100/full at the ethernet port and always gets above the advertized speed...... very very sweet and easy to run.... just a step or two above this netgear that I have now.... (which I WISH was 100/full at the WAN port, but is not, but still gets 400-500 kb/sec)

We may opt for something else when I get home.... we shall see.... there is router / vpn / firewall like the netgear that i wanted to get that is really fast and sophisticated, but could not justify $289 for it.

suggestion..... go to http://www.dslreports.com and use both the speed tests and tweak tests........ "Dr TCP" will tune your TCP/IP settings for windows to fit your cable as reported by their tests..... You must have SUN java (not MS) to run the test (Fed Court order now in effect).... and your perf will increase a LOT... Most PC's use the default of TCP Receive WIn of 5740... I am at 74,000-something, with selective ack... you will see.... it will recommend AND explain each paarameter really nice.

    D2OL conformer comparisons???

    Guys,

How high does that 'Best of' go? Does the higher # mean I am getting close to an answer for that conformer/candidate?????

It seems to add a molecule and then run again.... dock time increasing and energy level decreasing... well into the negative now...

Is this normal??? I know the 1,400,000 and 2,000,000 are.. but 2,600,000 ????

    Chuck
