Getting to the root cause of the issue is somewhat more difficult.
I doubt very strongly indeed that anything kubuntu did caused it.
I have heard of windows going belly-up in that different-lanuguage way before. Usually coupled with the default admin user not being regarded by the OS as the default admin user anymore.
In theory you should be able to use the windows recovery processes to regain ownership and restore your profile and get back to exactly where it was.
If not, then kubuntu and it's cousins work very well as a data recovery tool and should allow you to backup the datafiles on that hdd before you decide to wipe it and start again.
