the asus dual L socket mobo (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131146) will support, or at least eventually support, two phenoms, right?
if so, thats what i am getting for my next system. 8 core goodness.

This motherboard uses 2 quad core barcelona's/opteron type cpu's , socket 1207. The Phenom will eventually run on the 1207 platform also I understand in its 65nm scale processor form.

I could be wrong, but it looks like the upcoming launch is for the AM2 - AM2+ variety, not the socket 1207 version like this asus MB supports. Also, as far as I know, there is no dual socket AM2 mb out there. For a dual socket you have to go with the 1207 socket mb like this Asus your talking about.
I have this board running 2 opterons right now. I'm looking to upgrade to 2 quad core barcelona's when I can get my hands on them. That would give us 8 core goodness if we could just get our hands on em.
they are not in stock yet. see below

oh, thought i remember reading that the phenoms would be available in am2 and 1207 flavors. however, that could have been referring to the future, not the release on monday.
but i didn't know you could use the quad opterons in that board. from what i saw of the board on newegg and asus.com, that board only accepts the FX line of procs.
but i have some money i want to spend on a new webserver/multitasker/crunching box and i want 8 cores. so i just have to wait for the opertons to come back in stock.
i just really want 8 cores. aside from my chinsy intel-based laptops, i have never had more than 1 core in a desktop.
If you wait till Q4 next year Intel (cough!) come out with their 8-core desktop processors followed by AMD several months (
) later!
This is becoming crazy... unless there is a huge twist in software development (in the direction of multithreading), what can anyone do with 8 cores on a desktop machine?? I mean, people that don't do Distributed Computing, or some other sort of specialized computing (rendering, video processing, etc) can hardly even find software that fills out today's 4 cores, let alone 8?

I hear your battle cry Polluxmr2, heh heh,
I want some 8 core stuff to. I'm just waiting on some Barcelona's to show that I can afford. I'm jonesing.
And yes I know this is massive overkill for regular desktop users, but hey, I'm not one of them. I have 40 cpu cores @home. I like massive silicon based transistorized power to play with. I wish I could afford more. This is a hobby for fun and learning. Theres nothing sensible done at my house other than to DC all of this, and keep up on new tech. for my own benefit. The side benefit is to all of those projects we support through our toying around.
This later spills over into the real world when employers find out I'm one of this biggest digit-heads in the immediate area, so they must employee me and pay massive amounts of money to keep me around. Ah the Techo-goob circle of life.

A Star Trek fan eh?
Darkness isn't there, but you can't see through it
well, i want to upgrade right now but octo-core is, or will be available really soon.
but that asus mobo and two quad core barcelonas will get me 8 cores?
what i usually do is get cutting edge stuff then hold onto it until its old enough to be in a museum. go go athlon 2500 barton core! (most advanced desktop cpu i own ) plus, helping to fight diseases and stuff is nice too. at least then, i can justify getting something so powerful that normal operations wouldn't use its full power.
(ps; lets keep it on topic. i have seen threads go very bad, very fast when people start talking about star trek, or star wars, or how star trek is better than star wars or how hayden christensen is a hack. i dont wanna tell people what to do and stuff, i just dont want to see a thread about 8 core computing devolve into insults being thrown back and forth in klingon and challenging someone jedi powers in KOTOR or whatever..... some of my friends are real nerds. so nerdy, even nerds are sometimes embarressed by them)
